Who Should Liverpool FC Buy in the January Transfer Window?

Note that this article is about who we can realistically buy, not who I want us to buy in fantasy land. Liverpool Football Club have been strongly linked with Turkish whiz-kid Arda Turan recently, and I see this as an ideal move. Reportedly Arda (Turkish players are commonly known by their first name rather than their surname) would be available for around £10m, and we could easily raise that amount of cash with the sale of Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel and Andrea Dossena. The Turk often plays on the right wing but has been known to play in central midfield before, making him a highly versatile player (the kind that Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez likes).

The second player that could really benefit our team is veteran Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistlerooy, who, at his peak was one of the top marksmen in the world, but sadly now can’t get a game for Real Madrid (his current club) due to their heavy squad redevelopment in the summer (where they spent over £200m on new players).

Another player that could be quite handy is Simon Kjaer. The Danish defender is one of Europe’s hottest defensive talents, and the 20 year old who currently plays at Palermo would be a great addition to our squad and would certainly help to sure up our uncharacteristically leaky defence. Despite this, I think buying Kjaer might be a step too far for us, as we probably don’t have the funds and our money would be better spent on quality attacking players.

EPL Team Profile – Blackburn

The formal name of the club is Blackburn Rovers Football Club, and they known by many nicknames, the most popular among which are Rovers, the Blue and Whites, and the Riversiders.

Founded in 1875, the squad host matches at their home venue of Ewood Park, in Blackburn, Lancashire, England, which has a capacity of just over 31,000.

The owners are the Trustees of the Jack Walker 1987 Settlement.

The chairman is John Williams, while the manager of the club is Sam Allardyce.

Blackburn won the Premier League in 1994-95, beating rivals Manchester United to the post, a year after they had ended in second place on the Premiership rungs.

Barely four years after winning the championship the Riversiders were relegated. Three years later they were back.

In two matches played this season, Rovers have a win and a loss; they won 1-0 in their opening match against Everton, and lost 2-1 to Birmingham City on the second weekend.

Pre-season Review:

Blackburn finished in 10th place, in last season’s Premiership campaign. They also got to the semi final at the League cup.

This relative good showing will put a weight of expectation on Sam Allardyce.

Transfers have been conspicuous by their relative absence at the Blackburn headquarters.

The following players comprise the Blue and Whites:

Robinson, Salgado, Samba, Olsson, Jones, Nelsen, Givet, Kalinic, Dunn, El-Hadji Diouf, Pedersen, Emerton, Bunn, Nzonzi, Hoilett, Andrews, Chimbonda, and Mame Diouf.

Their goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, got called up to represent England in a friendly against Hungary, and Blackburn called on Frank Fielding, who had never played for the Ewood Park side, to stand in for him.

The generously built Christopher Samba’s all-round skills as a goal scoring defender must make him Blackburn’s man for every occasion.

Alan Judge is back from Plymouth Argyle where he had been on loan over the past 18 months. Judge could get several starts this season in the absence of signings.

Manchester United’s Mame Biram Diouf is in on loan and expected to add to the goal count.

Yildiray Basturk has departed after an all too short tenure at Ewood Park after a less than impressive outing.

Steven Reid has left for West Bromwich Albion.

Blackburn will try to top last year’s good performance, and you can expect some Allardyce moves to strengthen that resolve while the transfer window is still open.

I expect Blackburn to do as well or even better than last year, with the black cloud of possible relegation lifted.

Highlights: West Ham 3-2 Liverpool | Trent & Origi goals can't prevent first defeat

Trent Alexander-Arnold & Divock Origi netted excellent goals for Jürgen Klopp’s side, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Reds slipping to defeat in the Premier League for the first time this season.

Team Leadership – The Classic Us Vs Them Strategy

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been in the news again. Last season it was the unfortunate spat with Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. Now it’s an issue over diving.

Tony Pulis deemed that Suarez should be banned by The FA for his perceived dive in the Premier League game at Anfield last Sunday. The world of football generally agrees with Pulis, including ex Liverpool players, normally unfailingly loyal in their support of their former club.

Brendan Rodgers however has described the criticism of Suarez as ‘vilification’. Strong accusations. But inside the defense of his player is a formula that Sir Alex Ferguson has used so successfully over the years. It’s the classic US v Them strategy.

Rodgers is seeking to creating a fortress mentality at Anfield. One that implies that outside of the football club there are enemies. The THEM. The ones who stand against Liverpool succeeding.

Thus far, Rodgers has highlighted referees who are failing to spot obvious fouls against Suarez. They belong in the camp of The THEM. The press will probably be in there too with their criticism of Suarez’s antics.

And Tony Pulis will probably find himself in this anti-Liverpool group now, alongside any other professional who has openly stated that Rodgers should speak to Suarez about his diving. No doubt The FA will soon be in the ever growing THEM camp shortly too.

An US v Them strategy works on very simply principles. The idea is to create an enemy, The THEM that causes the US to come together in strength to fight off this external threat.

The stronger the THEM is perceived to be, therefore the more united the US should become. The manager wants all his players to be part of the US. for to not be, by implication, makes you part of the THEM. Or an enemy within!

And when you have a strong US, the group become united and working together towards the same goal. As the unity develops, success should follow, thus reinforcing the belief inside of the group, about themselves. Look how strong we are in defeating the external enemy! And so no one inside the US camp want to let the rest of the group down, as that makes them part of the THEM by implication.

If Brendan Rodgers has the trust of his players, then they should naturally want to follow him into battle against the THEM. And with Liverpool struggling to get their Premier League campaign going, the Irishman needs a very strong US to fend off the doubts and uncertainties lingering over Anfield.

Remember When You Heard That Jose Mourinho Had Parted Company With Chelsea

It was with great shock that I received the sudden departure of «the special one» from Chelsea Football club, this morning.

I had predicted that he would not last the season when I was previewing the premiership but it still came as a surprise.

The reason I thought he would go was football related because I could not for the life of me think, why Chelsea ever thought they were even remotely close to Manchester United last season but chose not to make significant signings this season.

I was flabbergasted that they only brought in Claudio Pizarro, Steve Sidwell on a free and Tal Ben-Haim. None of those players in my humble opinion is likely to add anything really significant to a championship chasing side. They even managed to lose Arjen Robben in the process to make them worse.

I have never been a fan of the way Chelsea played under Mourinho with the emphasis on Drogba muscling his way round defenders and Lampard coming in from deep. Mourinho may have further irritated with his constant harpings that after a while, became tedious.

But there is no escaping the fact, that he was the finest tactician in the premiership by a long way and possibly in the world. Some myopic people would argue that he was successful because of Abramovich’s money. Having money does help but does not get you success, as Real Madrid and Inter Milan would testify to.

Barcelona won the champions league and the La Liga title 2 seasons ago and deemed it fit to spend money on Gianluca Zambrotta, Lilian Thuram and Eidur Gudjohnssen to make them even stronger but they did not win anything last season.

Newcastle have spent money over the years and they just have 2 FA cup final appearances to show for it. Mourinho, in just 3 seasons, had won the premiership twice, Coca cola cup twice and the FA cup. His Chelsea side has gone from being soft away from home to be the most feared ruthless machine in premiership history and are unbeaten at home in 64 matches, which is an English record.

He has reached the Champions league semi final twice only to be defeated by Liverpool through a controversial goal and on penalties that everyone knows is a lottery. What some of his critics fail to understand is that a lot of his buys are vastly overpriced like £12 on Paolo Ferreira for instance.

Again it is not like Chelsea are the only ones that spend big, Manchester United have spent £30m twice on Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, £18 on Michael Carrick and £17 on Owen Hargreaves. You have to be rich to spend those sums on players that are nowhere worth that kind of money.
As a matter of fact the only manager that has not spent big to gain success is Arsene Wenger and that is mainly because he does not have that much money to spend and when he does splash out, it tends to be a waste like £8m on Francis Jeffers!

It does not matter how much money you spend but whether you spend the money wisely.

Not necessarily getting the best players and the most skilful but also getting players that would gel with one another, players that are ready to do battle for you and you should be able to create an atmosphere that is to most of the players’ liking.

I think Mourinho did that to great effect at Chelsea. My only big problem with him was his favouritism of some players over the others.

I do not subscribe to treating people differently and I did not like the way he was always putting the likes of Lampard, Terry, Cech, Essien and especially Drogba over the others.

His treatment of Shevchenko was extremely shabby as he should have shown Shevchenko more respect and understanding instead on continually undermining a great player. But Chelsea, in my opinion have committed an almighty blunder and only time will tell how big a blunder it was to get rid of the most successful manager in their history. The winners are Rafa Benitez and Arsene Wenger because they now know that instead of 2 teams standing in their way, it is now just Manchester United, as I don’t really see Chelsea mounting a serious challenge with their current crop of players.

On a side note, a lot of women would be very upset that they would not be getting their regular dose of oogling Mourinho. I have never come across any other manager with his effect on the ladies.

Hottest Soccer Transfer News – Nistelrooy on His Way to Madrid

After weeks of dilly-dallying between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, it is for certain now that Ruud Van Nistelrooy is moving to Real Madrid at an undisclosed amount. After Cannavaro and Brazilian midfielder Emerson, Nistelrooy is the third big signing for the Madrid squad.

Over the years the Dutchman had been a great acquisition for the Red Devils as he scored 150 goals in 219 games and second highest goal scoring tally in Champions’ league with almost one goal a game.

This week Steve Mclaren has to take the first major decision of his short English manager career, to hand out the captain’s armband. Initial reports suggest that John Terry is the clear favorite for the task as Gerrard’s place in the starting eleven is not certain.
