A History of the Chelsea Flower Show

The origins of the Chelsea Flower Show is as rich and varied as the abundance of stunning horticulture on display in it's gardens. Before it became the world's number one venue for lovers of flowers and garden architecture, the exhibition was the centerpiece of The Royal Horticultural Society Great Spring Show. This was first held in the Spring of 1862, and the original site was located at Kensington. This was a popular event in the calender and as a result, ran for some twenty-six years until 1888.

The decision was then made to relocate the annual Great Spring Show to a more central location in the city, so as to entice even more visitors. The selected venue was the Temple Gardens, near the Enbankment and this was an instant hit with more exhibits being displayed than ever before. Not only was it capturing the imagination of the public, but also suppliers of plants, flowers and seed were drawn to it as a means of gaining further business.

The Great Spring Show ran until 1912, when a one-off Royal International Horticultural Exhibition was launched and a larger, more suitable site was needed. It was down to the eminent horticulturist, Sir Harry Veitch to locate the new venue. Eventually, and to some surprise, he chose the eleven acres of Chelsea Royal Hospital grounds to host the Exhibition. Such was the success of this elaborate event, that all concerned believed it to be the perfect venue for the Great Spring Show. And so, in the Spring of 1913, the Show was relocated again to the Chelsea site, which is where it has remained to this day.

It has been an incredibly hardy exhibition, with only the two World Wars having interrupted it's annual celebration of all things horticultural. The success of the Chelsea Flower Show has grown exponentially through the years and is now well known as being the top attraction in the horticulture calendar. It welcomes visitors from around the world to walk through the myriad of beautiful exhibits on display. It is a location very much close to the Royal Family's heart, and several of the family pay visits to a special preview of the exhibition.

The gardens themselves breathe fresh life and inspire new generations of gardeners and followers of horticulture, often creating new fashions and trends as each year passes and this will no doubt continue on into the future.

The Chelsea Flower Show has survived through all weathers, wars and riots to promote it's stunning attractions year on year and is surely the benchmark for all other horticulture shows. It's long history is indelibly woven into the fabric of what makes it such a successful and popular event.

4 Reasons to Make and Use the Versatile Oland Tool

Woodworking tool suppliers have risen to the challenge of the woodturner’s desire for more and better tools. Most woodturners are self taught with the result that beginners are not sure what tools to use and can become convinced that a new tool will greatly increase their woodturning ability. Quickly they realize that a great deal of money can be spent on tools and in fact many turners own tools with a value greater than that of their wood lathe itself. The Oland tool is a change from this position with its value and versatility.

There are 4 things to consider when thinking of adding this tool to your woodturning tool arsenal.

1. Typically the Oland tool is made in the home shop. This a member of the family of tools known an inserted tip tool. Quite simply, these are designed to be easy to make and maintain in the home shop. A shaft is drilled and tapped to hold a high speed steel cutting tip, the shaft is inserted into a handle turned by the woodturner, and the tip is placed in the shaft. Once sharpened it is ready to go for a fraction of the cost of most commercial tools.

2. Tools wear out with use and especially with sharpening. Every time a tool is used, a bit of steel is ground away. Woodturners tend to sharpen much more often than most other woodworkers and use grinders instead of honing stones. Grinders remove more steel than do stones and the tools wear away faster than regular chisels. The Oland tool uses a cutting tip that lasts well and is easily replaced for one or two dollars. Plus it is not necessary to get used to a tool that steadily becomes shorter and then learn to use a newly purchased tool of regular length. It is no great chore, but can be a bit off putting for some.

3. Woodturners use gouges for spindles and bowls. These gouges are of different shape, sharpening style, and generally length. In particular, beginners usually start off with spindles and spindle gouges almost always part of beginner woodturning sets of tools. Soon the beginner wants to try faceplate turning and usually bowls. The spindle gouges are not suited for bowls and bowl gouges often cost more than the whole beginner set. Oland tools may be used for either spindles or faceplate work and are ideally suited for bowl turning and at a cost of less than most single gouges let alone a set.

4. Tips for the Oland tool are easily replaced and may be ground in an infinite variety of shapes and angles. The most familiar is a side view of forty-five degrees and a top view of the tip slightly rounded. However it is simple to have tips with sharper angles for speciality cuts, the edges brought back for cuts similar to an Irish grind on a bowl gouge or less angle for scraping the inside of a hollow form. Individual, inexpensive cutting tips with various grinds are easily kept and quickly exchanged in a few seconds.

The Oland tool is a great addition to the woodturner’s tool arsenal. It is easy to make and simple to maintain as well as being a versatile cutting tool for both spindles and bowls. Woodturners can use it to make a great craft even more enjoyable.

The Formation of the Beatles

The Beatles were a musical band that became a worldwide phenomenon during the 1960’s. They hysteria that they generated became known as «Beatlemania». Formulated in Liverpool, the group included John Lennon on rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney on bass guitar, George Harrison on lead guitar, and Ringo Starr on drums. Depending on the song, each member sang in the group.

In March 1957 John Lennon formed a «skiffle group» that he called «The Quarrymen.» Paul McCartney saw him perform at a church function, and when John realized that he could tune his own guitar, he asked him to join the group. Paul joined in July, 1957. In March of the next year, Paul’s friend George was invited to see the group perform, and he soon joined as the group’s lead guitarist. Finding a drummer for the group was to become quite the challenge. After much turmoil, Ringo Starr joined the group in the early 60s.

In the early years the group perfected their craft in the clubs that dominated the nightlife of Hamburg, Germany. Long hours of performing were the norm, and this lead to the development of some very talented musicians. When back in Liverpool, they perfected their chops at the Cavern Club, and their popularity continued to grow.

If there was ever a «Fifth Beatle», as Paul McCartney was to later say, «It was Brian Epstein». Brian started watching the Beatles when they performed at the Cavern Club, and by January, 1962 the Beatles signed him to become their manager. Brian opened the door to see George Martin, a producer at EMI, and the rest «as they say» is history.

The Beatles first entry into the UK’s record charts was their song «Love Me Do». Their single, «Please, Please Me» was more popular still. By the time «From Me To You» came along, they were well on their way to dominating the record charts for years to come.

Dominating the United States market was not immediate or a certainty. Entrance into this race was delayed for various reasons, but in December, 1963, Capitol Records released «I Want to Hold Your Hand», and the Beatles domination of the US market was on it’s way as well.

After dominating the UK and the US, the next stop was the world. In the years to come the Beatles either toured or did a concert in Hong Kong, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the list goes on…

As time went on, cracks started to appear in the group. They recorded their final album, «Abbey Road», in the summer of 1969. Recording the song «I Want You (She’s So Heavy)» was the last time all four Beatles were together in the recording studio.

On September 20, 1969 John announced his departure to the group, but this was not made public until legal
matters were resolved. Paul filed for a dissolution of the band on December 31, 1971, and this finally took effect in 1975. The final «nail in the coffin», as they say, had been set.

Middlesbrough is Back at the Top Table of English Football

The Pride of the North East

Pride of the North East is a richly deserved title given Middlesbrough Football Club's recent results, sharing the spoils away to title contenders Arsenal and Manchester City.

Few people outside the north east expected Boro to make a fist of it amongst the big boys feasting at the top table of English football this season. Although the club might lack a glut of star players and expensive signings, what they do possess is one of the brightest young coaches in the game, having honed his coaching skills under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, at a time when his star burnt brightly in the firmament. As you'll discover later, Mourinho was linked with another famous Middlesbrough coach as he took his first tentative steps in his coaching career.

When Aitor Karanka was appointed as Boro's first foreign manager in November 2013, the club may have appeared to be taking a gamble on raw talent, rather than playing it safe with a trustworthy pair of hands with extensive experience of the British game. A lack of success at the hands of Gordon Strachan and Tony Mowbray, may well have influenced their thinking.

This leads me to reflect on a period in Boro's history, when the club's hierarchy in their wisdom decided to turn towards Malcolm Allison, who at one time just like Karanka was considered to be one of the brightest young coaches of his generation. The difference being, that when Big Mal turned up at the old Ayresome Park stadium in October 1982, his star as a visionary coach was very much on the wane.

Ironically when Malcolm Allison was manager of Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal just before his dramatic arrival on Teesside, he was aided by former Boro conditioning coach Roger Spray and an ambitious young coach by the name of Jose Mourinho. While the special one's stock might be currently on the decline, as was the case with Big Mal during his fateful spell with Boro, few would argue that in their heyday, they were the brightest coaches of their era. As a fitting tribute to Big Mal, who sadly departed from this world in October 2010, Roger Spray holds him in such high esteem as to consider him as influential as Mourinho and Arsene Venger!

The club being in dire financial straits further compounded the depression enveloping the Boro faithful. While neighbors Sunderland were given the tag of 'Bank of England' in the late 1950s due to their abundance of cash, the early 1980s was a time for drastic financial measures at Ayresome Park.

When you consider that the club is today valued at around £ 87 million and that the incumbent English manager by the name of Southgate opened the floodgates and splashed a whopping £ 13.6 million on the record breaking signing of Brazilian Afonso Alves during the 2007-08 season , Allison's antics seems to belong in a long forgotten distant past!

When Big Mal was lured to Teesside by ambitious chairman Mike McCullagh, the club was bottom of the old second division, attracting gates of only 5,000, half a million pounds in debt and losing £ 12,000 a week!

Today the average attendance at the Riverside is an impressive 30,000 in stark contrast with the poorest crowd since the Second World War of only 5,435 that witnessed their home game against Fulham in March 1984. Almost inevitably this led to Allison being relieved of his managerial duties. With Middlesbrough having finished in sixteenth position in the old second division during his first season, the club's heroic effort in holding Arsenal to a 1-1 draw in their FA Cup fifth round home tie, represented the zenith of his short stint with the club. Unfortunately time was not of the essence and Big Mal failed in his quest to revive the sleeping giant of the North East!

The manager's antics and double standards were reminiscent of scenes familiar to viewers of the Carry On films of that period. In keeping with his reputation for an insatiable appetite for stunning birds and the high life, Allison was in his seventh heaven, entertaining his female companions courtesy of the finest champagne at the Baltimore Hotel, while running up a hefty bill of £ 3,500. In comical fashion, his answer to the required harsh financial measures was to sack the club's tea man on £ 18 per week! Fortunately the man capable of a fine brew was reinstated following assurances that the players would pay his princely wage!

Big Mal, always one for the limelight, embarked on his mission to bring stars to the Teesside gloom, with ambitious efforts to sign George Best from San Jose Earthquakes and the Liverpool duo David Johnson and David Fairclough! He succeeded only in signing the ex- Ipswich Town star Kevin Beattie to bolster his defense, although by this time he was crocked by knee injuries! Indeed some would say that his best capture came off the field in the form of local beauty, 28 year old school teacher Lynn Salten, by far the classiest act on show!

Today the footballing landscape has changed beyond recognition with Middlesbrough plying their trade at the wonderful Riverside Stadium and recipients of the huge sums of money assured by entry to the top table of English football.

Whether Karanka and his charges can preserve their premier league status remains to be seen, but the Boro faithful will be encouraged by recent accomplished performances. Some would say that football has come a long way since the 1980s, but it seems that today's global nature and rich trappings of the premier league, seems to have left our beautiful game void of true characters like Malcolm Allison, who despite failure on the field , certainly lit up the North East with rich experiences that will forever be a part of Middlesbrough Football Club's folklore!

Why Choose Leftbank Apartments Above Any Other

The Spinningfields development is the largest single urban development in the North West, and one of the biggest in Europe. As well as the Leftbanks residential apartments, the Spinningfields area offers hotels, offices, restaurants, shops and bars. On top of that it is just a stone throw away from the city center.

Leftbank is a development by Persimmon Homes, a developer established in 1972 that has a number of buildings across Manchester. Persimmon are a mid to high end developers, and the Leftbank apartments are noted as being well appointed. The building has a well-designed lobby. There is an excellent fitness center in the building so you do not need to go out for exercise. Can Soccer Be Explained By Statistics?

Can a game as fluid and – many would argue – nuanced, and even elegant, as the game of soccer is, be explained by statistics? After all, there are hundreds of variables which all come into play during each and every soccer match – and, in some cases, pure luck seems to be a deciding factor in winning the game. A player’s performance in that particular match surely cannot be explained by the numbers alone, so those unknowns cannot be discounted neither.

Can any win or lose in the game of soccer be attributed to something as unpoetical as numbers, skeptics wonder. Soccer fans have never demanded more than to know the score, and time elapsed. Unlike those dedicated to baseball, soccer websites typically display only a handful of categories that could be useful for statistics: goals, assists, shots, shots on goal, game-winning goals and game-winning assists. Looking at those, one could conclude that soccer is just not a numbers game.

Still, in this age of big data, even a game as free-flowing, variable and seemingly unpredictable as the soccer undoubtedly is, has started to take data analysis more seriously. It was only in 1994 that FIFA has started counting assists, but now it looks like the game of soccer may be on a brink of statistical revolution. The biggest clubs, like Arsenal, Real Madrid, Chelsea or Manchester United, have already spent hundreds of thousands on statistical data analysis.

However, it looks like top clubs intend to keep the data for themselves! They have staff members dedicated to interpreting the data that has been generated on their matches. It seems like they are not too keen on making the methods they use to do so publicly debatable. They prefer to use them internally, to their team’s advantage.

Data analysis companies they employ will watch a live feed of the game, chart any distinct action, enter all this data into a database, and crunch the numbers. Statistics such as individual player touches, number of passes, number of balls lost and won, and others, are then revealed. While it seems that the resulting numbers still can’t accurately predict who will win the game, they can tell you a lot about the quality of the game. For example, a team’s number of touches is found to correlate with his FIFA rankings.

Still, unlike baseball and other similarly structured sports, analyzing soccer data is hard. Yet, there is no going back to hunches-only approach any time soon.
