More Comebacks Than Rocky

Having won 10 Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, two Champions League titles and five FA Community Shields, Paul Scholes’s passion for Manchester United is unequivocal. He made a winning return to the side last season but will his decision to put his boots back on prove to be the right one? Let’s look at other athletes that have made comebacks with contrasting fortunes…

Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan retired from basketball in 1993. Whilst he cited lack of desire and ambition after leading the Chicago Bulls to three championship titles, it was suggested that the decision was based on the recent murder of his father. Jordan returned to basketball in 1995 and led the Chicago Bulls to three more championship titles. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2009 with its website declaring him «… the greatest basketball player of all time.»

Lance Armstrong

Cycling legend, Lance Armstrong, was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996 aged only 25, with a chance of survival at less than 40%. However, two years later he returned to the sport and went on to claim seven Tour de France titles, creating a rivalry with Jan Ullrich that is viewed as one of the greatest conflicts in sporting history.

Kim Clijsters

At 24 Kim Clijsters retired from professional tennis in 2007 having won three Grand Slams and been runner up in four more. She stated that her health and private family life were more important to her as she was constantly beset by injuries. After becoming a mother in 2008 she returned to the sport the very next year winning The US Open in 2009 and 2010 and the Australian Open title in 2011. She now boasts a total tournament tally of 41 WTA singles titles and 11 WTA doubles titles and is the only mother to have won a major title since Yvonne Goolagong in 1980.

Michael Schumacher

Few people have dominated their sport in the way Michael Schumacher did. Not only did Schumacher win the World Championship an unprecedented seven times, he continues to hold many driver records including most race victories, fastest laps, pole positions, points scored and most races won in a single season (13). He became the only driver in Formula One history to finish in the top three in every race of a season and then also broke the record for most consecutive podium finishes. Having retired in 2007, two years later he made a comeback with Team Sauber Mercedes but his former success has eluded him. Last season he failed to register a podium place and finished 316 points behind eventual winner, Sebastian Vettel.

Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson burst into boxing by becoming the youngest boxer to conquer the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles. His sporting career halted in 1992 when, following a very high profile trial, he served three years in prison for rape. Tyson made a series of comebacks but lost his heavyweight crowns to Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis. Despite earning over £300 million dollars during his boxing career he was declared bankrupt in 2003.

What Are the Benefits of Liver Detox Diets and Who Should Not Do It?

There is a wide variety of detox diet plans publicized in magazines, on the Internet, and on television. Some take up to four weeks, and are ruled out as too extreme by many nutritionists. There are also milder, 24- to 72-hour detox diets combining fasting and drinking nothing but purified water for the first 24 hours.

The detoxification diet that targets the liver is the most effective of all the detox plans out there. Among the body’s most important instruments, your liver is an intricate and complicated organ with more than nine hundred functions. The liver filters toxins from your bloodstream. In our everyday lives, exposure to pollutants, combined with our own less-than-healthy diets, cause the liver to clog, something like a vacuum cleaner filter.

Once it becomes clogged, the liver can’t function properly, leaving toxins to accumulate in body tissue. This can cause an array of health problems including allergies, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, elevated cholesterol levels, constipation, and irregular levels of blood glucose. To avoid such health issues, many nutritionists recommend partaking in a liver detoxification periodically.

What Should You Eat?

The liver detox diet is not difficult to follow when contrasted with most detox diet plans. The crux of this detox diet is to hydrate with lots of water in addition to eating only whole organic foods like whole grains, lean meats, fish, fruit, and vegetables. During your liver detox diet beets, artichokes, seaweed, radishes, turmeric, cabbage and broccoli are all particularly liver-healthy foods.

What to Avoid

Avoid processed foods during your liver detox, as well as all drinks that are seeped in fat or sugar. Toxins like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and illegal drugs must be shunned during a liver detox diet. Remember, you’re trying to filter and cleanse your liver, help it to free itself from the toxic substances that overwhelm it so that it can perform at its maximum effectiveness. If you prefer to stay with your habits don’t do it – it might harm you.

Flushing and Supplements

Certain people cleanse their liver for 24-hour periods during their liver detox diet. Flushing your liver is accomplished by consuming nothing but purified water, plus a drink that is a blend of lemon and orange juice, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, ginger and a pinch of cayenne pepper. It may not taste great, but this combination is excellent for detoxing the liver.

If you decide that you want to give the liver detoxification a try, be sure to have a good multivitamin on hand, to make sure your body is receiving all its vitamins and minerals. A bit of milk thistle and dandelion, both liver-friendly supplements are good to have on hand during your liver detox as well.

One of the best liver detox regimen which can be done over the weekend can be found in the works of Dr. Hulda Clark. Although controversial this woman has written down a well functioning and cheap method to cleanse the liver and get rid of toxins preventing the liver to work in the best possible way.

Your Scrapbooking Arsenal

This article explores some of the basic tools you need in your scrapbooking arsenal. Whether you’re new to scrapbooking or a scrapbooking guru, you need to have the basics in place when starting any scrapbooking project. As with any project, without the proper tools you’re cutting yourself short and limiting your ability to properly express your creativity.

The first tool in your scrapbook quiver is, of course, the album. That’s the «book» part of «scrapbook» and serves as the foundation of your project. You’ll want to consider the size of elements to be included in your scrapbook. Are you including photographs, newspaper clippings, full size 8.5″x11″ sheets of paper? Plan accordingly by using an album that will fit your needs. 8.5×11 and 12×12 are common sizes.

Just as your album is the foundation of your scrapbook, the foundation of each page is the cardstock. Usually you will want to use white or off white colors, but depending on your style and the content of your scrapbook, you can experiment with bolder or more vibrant colors. For a book about your baby growing up, you might want to use softer pinks or light blues, for example.

Because your memories are important, you want them to last a long time. Page protectors that fit the pages of your album will help keep the oils from your fingers from directly contacting the pages and keep everything protected for years to come. Additionally, if something ever falls off of one of your pages, it will be contained within the page protector for easy recovery and quick fixes.

It seems basic, but the next thing you need is a variety of papers. Make sure the paper you use is acid free. Beyond that, let your imagination run wild. The more colors you have, the better! For background elements, you will want subtle colors that make your elements stand out. For foreground elements, you will want bright colors that do the standing out. Don’t forget to also pick up some vellum – it will add depth to your pages and give you another element in your creative quiver.

Let’s talk adhesives. You’ll need something to stick your elements to the pages of your scrapbook. Whether it be tape, glue, or something else, make sure it is acid free and non-toxic. This is based mostly on personal preference. You may like using glue sticks while someone else might prefer tape or liquid glues. There are specialty products available such as glue dots (such as Hermafix Dots or Memory Book Glue Dots) that provide a super easy way to attach elements to a page and are designed especially for scrapbooking.

Experiment with the various options to find the one that work best for you and your style of scrapbooking.

A variety of pens, colored pencils, and markers are also essential. Prismacolor makes great markers. They are a bit more expensive, but they last a long time and produce the greatest quality. Again, experiment with different writing instruments to find what works best for you, your style, and the content of your scrapbooks.

Unless you have a table you enjoy cutting into, you will need a cutting mat (we’ll get to cutting tools in a minute). Look for a «self-healing» type as these will tend to last longer than the most basic mats. Not only will these protect your table or counter top, but most mat provide built in rulers and other references to help make cutting easy.

With everything in place, it’s time to start cutting. Cutting tools are an arsenal in and of themselves. Scissors might seem like the most basic tool, but there are considerations to be made as far as quality and comfort goes. Try out the different scissors at the craft store. Usually, the nicer the scissors, the easier they will cut and the longer they will last. Fiskars is a great brand that many scrapbookers swear by. You will also want an Exacto knife for intricate cuts and working with dies.

Speaking of dies, that is our last stop and the last piece of our toolset. Dies allow you to cut specific shapes out of paper, vellum, or whatever else very quickly and easily. There are a variety of types from small handheld single-shaped dies to larger electronic die cutters that can do an endless amount of shapes. Explore your local craft store for options.

One of the favorite die cut machines among scrapbookers is the Cricut Expression. Not only can it cut a huge variety of shapes for your scrapbooks, but it can also cut vinyl lettering for a huge variety of projects not just limited to scrapbooking. It even does glass etching. Some of the other electronic die cut machines do a good job as well, but most require being hooked up to a computer adding to their complexity. The Cricut is easy enough for a child to use, but versatile enough for a creative scrapbooker!

The Famous Actor And The Homeless Man

On The Street.

It was the actor I noticed first, laughing and full of bonhomie, talking to a Big Issue seller on the street.

«That was John Hurt,» said the Big Issue seller to an indifferent passer-by.

«That was John Hurt,» he said to me as I walked towards him, his enthusiasm undimmed. «Did he buy one?» I said.

I could not ignore his pleasure. He was smiling. I couldn’t walk by, as I sometimes do with Big Issue sellers.

«Yes!» he cried excitedly. «That was John Hurt.»

John Hurt was an actor, but he was also jon hurt, a homeless man. Not unusual sight, an ordinary jon with ordinary hurts. But, this one could say:

«I may be in the gutter but I’m looking at the stars.» or, at one star – who had briefly brightened his life.

And for a moment, the illusion seemed real: that people cared, that everything would be alright, that we were all part of the same existence.

We might accept an illusion until the little boy points out that the Emperor has no clothes. How long did that glow remain with the Big Issue seller? How long did he bathe in reflected light? –

«John Hurt bought a Big Issue from me

But even if the actor had paid double (or more) for the magazine, had he really touched that man’s life? He may have briefly felt good about his largesse – he had been talking and laughing with the seller; not worrying about the price of the magazine and not waiting for any change.

Actions and gestures can take on a quality out of proportion to their worth. Politicians are prime examples of this.

They say they are in public life, as if they mean they are performing a service. But they expect the public to serve their ambition, behaving as if they have a right to their position – both self-seeking and self-serving.

It’s an illusion. The world of the two John Hurts do not touch. Another little boy sees that the ‘Emperor has no clothes’. No homeless person is rehoused. No policies change.

I briefly engaged with jon hurt on the street. But I did not buy a Big Issue. I already had a magazine for my journey home. I’d done my bit by witnessing jon hurt’s transformation.

John is still acting and jon is still homeless and I have turned the experience into a self-indulgent piece. Maybe the Big Issue will buy it.

N.B. The day I wrote this was the first day of an «Introduction to Journalism» at the City Lit in London. We were asked to write a ‘report’ on something that had happened on our way home, and bring it to the second lesson the following week. When the tutor read ‘The Big Issue’ he said to me:

«You are not a journalist, you are a writer». I did not go back to the class. But sent this story to The Big Issue the next day.

Next… A short story, written after the above encounter, imagining what jon hurt’s life could be like.

The Homeless Man

jon hurt – an imagined life

jon opened his eyes painfully and then closed them again. The numbness of his limbs made him let out a huge sigh. The sigh quickly turned to a cough which raked his chest and sent his head spinning. The single blanket which covered him was damp with sweat, despite the coldness of the morning.

The noises of others around him slowed and died… as he sank into unconsciousness.

He woke again and tried to stretch his legs. A cold stiffness crept stealthily thought his thin body. He coughed again and again until his head hurt. «

«Come on, jon, it’s chucking out time. Come on you lazy bastard, get up, you’ve already missed breakfast.» called a voice from the door, which banged closed shortly afterwards.

jon eased himself out of bed. He knew there would be no hot water to wash with and that the breakfast, even if there was any left, would have been rejected even by Oliver Twist.

He tried to remember where he had heard that name…

‘Oliver Twist’ sounded like a made up name. Where had he heard it before? Was it a book he had read at school?

He tried to remember.

There was a thin little boy standing in rags, saying that one plate of gruel was not enough.

«No», said jon out loud. «It is not enough.»

He remembered being at school. He had wanted to be an actor. He managed to get a warm cup of tea from the Hostel kitchen and sat, warming his hands… trying to remember.

And then he did remember. A school play when he was about 12 years old.

He had been Oliver Twist. He could sing then. He could act as well. Where had it all gone wrong?

jon collected his copies of the Big Issue and walked to his pitch in Leicester Square. He could always smile for the public. Some were his customers.

He had some nice ones, regular customers who said hello, some even stopping to talk.

«I may be in the gutter, but I’m looking at the stars.» he joked to himself with grim irony.

Now where had he heard that? Did he read it in book at school, where he read well and was always near the top in English?

Where had it all gone wrong? Why, when he left school, unable to get into Drama college, did he take one dead end job after another, start spending every evening in the pub, and be thrown out by his Dad, disappointed in his once- promising only son.

A middle-aged man stopped to by a Big Issue from him. He had a smiling, rather crinkly face which seemed familiar.

jon tried to put a name to the face.

He was an actor! At times like this jon began to feel hopeful that there could be a chance to do something else. That there was live after this. He looked closely at the man, who smiled.

‘Aren’t you an actor?’ he asked. The man laughed. He had a throaty, croakey laugh. As throaty and croakey as jon’s cough.

‘Well, yes,’ said the man. ‘My name’s John Hurt’. ‘But that’s my name’, said jon hurt, bitterly adding: ‘I bet it hurts me more.’

The actor looked sympathetic. He stayed and talked to jon then gave him a £50 note.

jon walked the streets with the £50 note in his pocket. What good was it? He could spend it trying to forget his situation. But it was not enough to turn his life around.

He remembered how going to the pub every night with his workmates dulled his ambition. He walked and walked.

What was the point of £50?

It would not get him a home, or a job. It would gradually be spent as he tried just to get by.

He remembered where he had seen his namesake. It had been in a film about a horse racing. That was it.

John Hurt had played the true life story of a jockey who had fought back against a terminal illness to win the Grand National, or some such big race.

jon found a bookies.

The Grand National had been postponed because of a bomb scare. Yes, he could put a bet on, it was running today, Monday instead.

jon chose a horse with ‘Lord’ in it’s name –

‘ha, ha,ha,’ he thought. ‘A titled horse’ and laughed until his chest hurt.

He put his £50, that was £40 after tax, on his ‘lordship’ at 100-1 on the nose. And then he walked away. He could not listen to the race, of course. He sat in Leicester Square.

Later he went to the bookies. He had won £40,000.
