The teams are from Switzerland, Czech Republic, Portugal. Turkey, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, Italy. Romania, France, Greece. Sweden, Spain and Russia.

The teams qualified for the Euro 2008 tournament went through tough qualifying matches to reach to the top spots in their standings. The teams divided into seven groups, with the top two in each section going straight into the finals. The qualifying system was simple enough, but still very few sides found it to be plain sailing. Greece being the team with 31 points had to face the most humiliating defeats in their history. After Germany’s Otto Rehhagel failed to make it in the FIFA World Cup in his home country, he was then determined to make a statement in the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers but his team had to face a terrible defeat in his own home against Turkey in the most memorable Group C Euro 2008 qualifiers game. Even though Germany made an early goal but Turkey’s play tempo did not let Germany keep up with them.

Turkey managed to achieve the runner’s up place in the Euro 2008 qualifiers table after their final struggling match. England faced many defeats in the qualifying matches but with much struggle managed to steal one victory from Israel putting England last position in Group E of Euro 2008 qualifiers. England did recover from the early defeats in the tournament when they followed a 0-0 draw at home against F.Y.R. Macedonia with 2-0 defeat in Croatia. However, two second-half Roman Pavlyuchenko goals saw Russia make a comeback after the 2-1 defeat in Moscow which then let them only to win their remaining games against the already eliminated Israel and Andorra. Omer Golan’s late goal saw Israel beat Russia 2-1, and then handed the initiative back to Steve McClaren’s England to face Croatia for a spot at the Euro 2008 but unfortunately faced a tie against group winners Croatia. At Wembley a qualification was expected only if the match drew but they lost 3-2 making big errors during the game and let Russia move on 1-0 win against Andorra. Russia’s coach did not expect it to end this way. Other worthy matches of the Euro 2008 qualifying tournament included Denmark-Sweden tie which was finally called off when a pitch invader attacked referee Herbert Fandel for dismissing a Denmark player and awarding the away side a penalty.Don’t forget to catch live UEFA Euro 2008 tournament matches on your PCs. Waterloo-Pinckney Recreational Park: Chelsea, MI

To kick off the first hike of Spring, I took off to Chelsea, MI to trek the 36 mile behemoth that is the Waterloo-Pinckney Recreation trail. With the snow melting, creating lots of puddles and mud along the way, Water-loo still offered all of the great sights and could easily be considered the "grandaddy" of all hiking trails in Michigan's lower peninsula.

Waterloo-Pinckney could easily be considered the "grandaddy" of all hiking trails in Michigan's lower peninsula. From it's trail.com page Waterloo is home to 36 total miles worth of trail and has elevations reaching to 1,128 feet! The combination of these two factors made for a great morning hike and presented much more than just the opportunity to walk in a straight line. Much of the trails had both steep inclines and declines which made for a very interesting experience. The trails being a mixture of ice and mud, climbing certainly became a challenge along the way and descention became quite an obstacle as well. Trying to avoid long slides or dangerous falls, I would certainly advise anyone considering this park to have a partner with you! As in all things, safety is key to a great hike and having assistance on this trail is definitely advised.

WEAR THE RIGHT SHOES

This trail is not for beginners! Therefore, wear shoes that provide optimal traction and grip as incline and decline will certainly work against your advantage at some point during the hike. If you find yourself in a difficult maneuver or situation, having on the right shoes will be half of the solution! Never underestimate the uses of having the correct hiking gear but this is especially for sure if you intend to hike this trail and get the best experience from it possible!

Overall, Waterloo provided lots of great sights, trails, and experiences. For my hiking partner and I, we learned that chemistry and depending on each other is quite necessary to complete some trails (though we did not think it possible in Michigan). There were times we needed each other's assistance in reaching the top of certain peaks and also smoothly descending areas we had climbed. Without one another, we could have certainly been stuck in a few places / situations or they would have been far more difficult to solve. Waterloo-Pinckney is definitely one for more advanced hikers but is sure to be worthwhile if trekked!

The End of Pre Season As We Know It

When I was young I remember seeing pre season as a chance to watch my team shape up against the greatest side’s featuring the greatest players in the land. Supporting a lower league team (now sadly a non-league team) the opportunities to watch this calibre of player were few and far between, perhaps the odd run in a cup competition would lead to a draw against a top flight powerhouse, however there was more chance of spotting top players in the annual run of pre season games. The top sides warmed up for their season by trying out new players and new systems, as well as blooding youngsters and bringing established players back to full fitness against lower league opposition from within their shores. Not only were their the above mentioned benefits to the top clubs, but in addition the benefits to the lower league clubs was perhaps immeasurable, a chance for lesser players to perform against the best, also an opportunity for fans to watch top draw football as their hype for the new season grows amongst blind loyalty. I remember only too well the thoughts of «This is going to be our year, we looked against Manchester united for the last half hour» and «If we play like that every week we will walk this league, we created Liverpool some genuine problems today»

Sadly this pre season paints a different picture. Tonight Blue Square Premier leagues side Wrexham advertise a match against «a Liverpool XI», the giveaway as to the standard of team on show is in the naming of the «Liverpool XI» it is highly likely that this will be a scratch side made up of promising youngsters and foreign trialists, possibly none of which will be known names to the local crowd. The star studded Liverpool first team including Gerrard, Carragher, Torres and Cole is in Austria for their pre season training camp and early practice matches. Meanwhile with Manchester United having a similar trip in the United States and foreign ventures for Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City among others it is clear that the direction of pre season for the top sides is to look abroad and not at home.

So why have the Premier League’s finest taken this approach to such an important part of their season preparations? Some may point to the benefits of training in warmer foreign climates, even at Altitude in some cases. Other muted benefits are the team morale gained by taking a squad away together so they are forced to live and entertain together not simply train together then go home. Surely the biggest benefit is financial. The popularity of the English Premier League all around the year is immense and the traditional pre season exhibition games all over Asia have proved economically rewarding to the top sides with big match fees being coupled with sales of club merchandise to the many fans of the game. Whilst current pre season schedules is a natural step for the modern game I can’t help missing the old style of pre season which pitched the top English sides against those in the lower leagues and gave us fans a chance to dream of what might be in the season ahead.

Sir Matt Busby – The Godfather of Manchester United

Sir Matt Busby was the manager at Manchester United from 1945 to 1969, taking the club to both League and Cup honours during his long and distinguished career at Old Trafford.

Sir Matt Busby took over the reins at Manchester United in October 1945, although his contract had been signed the previous February. From the moment the 35-year-old demobilized company sergeant-major arrived at the club things would never be the same again. The former Manchester City and Liverpool player immediately put his mark on the club and he demanded powers over the appointment of personnel and the buying and selling of players. Busby’s socialism no doubt transformed Manchester United into one of the giants of English football and during his first three years in charge the club finished First Division runners-up three times in a row as well as winning the FA Cup in 1948.

In 1958 tragedy struck when a British European Airways Elizabethan plane hit Munich Airport’s perimeter fence during its third attempt at take-off. After winning the Championship in 1952, 1956 and 1957, Busby’s immensly gifted Manchester United side were tragically destroyed. However, the legendary manager continued his search for the Holy grail and he will always be remembered for the European Cup Final in 1968 when Manchester United went on to trash Benfica 4-1. The memorable victory at Wembley Stadium was fully recognised as the long serving manager was most deservedly knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List shortly after.

When Sir Matt died on the 20th of January 1994, a vast amount of dedicated Manchester United supporters turned out to pay their last respects to the Scottish manager. On the 27th of April 1996, Manchester United Football Club unveiled a bronze statue at the Scoreboard End of Old Trafford in honour of the great man who was simply known as Mr. Manchester United. Sir Matt Busby had a second spell as Old Trafford manager during the 1970-71 season and he continued to be involved with the club for several years after his retirement.

«Resting in Interlaken, Germany was one thing and facing Old Trafford another. When I approached the ground and moved over the bridge along which our supporters had squeezed fifty abreast in there tens of thousands to shout for us I could scarcely bear to look. I knew the ghosts of the babes would still be there, and there they are still, and they will always be there as long as those who saw them still cross the bridge, young, gay, red ghosts on the green grass of Old Trafford.»

Sir Matt Busby quote.

However, it seems luck has not sided with the city. The Gunners are still too strong to be conquered, let alone play at own game. Can hold 0-0 draw with Arsene Wengar team has been a fair enough result for the club, who recently was suddenly rich. Facing the team that stuck in third place this time, Man. City can not do more in the game today. Because, in the first round Carlos Teves et al. never bother goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. This situation caused most of the City players busy doing defense and difficulties to build a dangerous counter attack.

However, the host did not loosen the attack, especially when substitute Nicklas Bendtner Theo Walcott signed. Strikes, strikes Gunners far more dangerous in front of goal City. Swift pressure to City defense. City, forcing Shay Given had to fall up to secure post.

As a result, minute-76 goalkeeper was no longer able to continue the match due to injury in his shoulder after a hard kick to block the release Abou Diaby. Gunnar Neilsen Given that replaces the task may look good with an opportunity to confront all Arsenal until the game ended.

The draw makes Manchester City remains stuck in fifth position achieve standings with one point in three games left this season. While more difficult to shake Arsenal in third place despite the Premier League title chances have been closed.
