Cristiano Ronaldo – The Cherry on Top

Since very little, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, started to show great talent for football, which made him relate from his youth on to professional football in Portugal, joining the Clube Desportivo Nacional, where he began his formation and development as player and where had the opportunity to stand out on his country.

With the needed abilities to play soccer well developed, Ronaldo continued advancing and in until 2001 he united to Sporting Lisboa, one of the most important teams on Portugal’s First Division, where with the support of his partners and the coaching and medical staff achieved to sharp his style and raise his game level. Thanks to the work done on his career, Cristiano Ronaldo, gets his official debut on October 2001 as a professional footballer at the Portugal’ Superliga with 17 years old. His impressive plays made him shine to convert himself in a regular player on the field for Sporting that on the same year won the league championship.

For 2003, the talent of the #7 ‘Red Devil’ was already being seen out of the borders of Portugal, an evidence of it was the great impression it cause on Manchester United at a friendly encounter for the Euro Cup. After calling the attention of Sir Alex Ferguson, he immediately started the negotiations with the Portuguese star, to include him in the British team. Ronaldo started with Manchester replacing David Beckham, who at the time transferred to Real Madrid.

On his first period with at England, Cristiano Ronaldo showed one more time his football talents guiding his team to a victory on the FA Cup. The huge progress shown by the player on the British club, made him worthy of the title for Best Young Footballer at a world level, obtaining the FIFPro 2005 and 2006. Another success on 2005 was scoring the 1000 goal for the Manchester United on the Premier League.

Besides owning a big load of personal distinctions at an international level, this Red Devil has as well several achievements at a team level that United has attain thanks to Ronaldo’s assistance; this important titles include Carling Cup, Community Shield, FA Premier League and the last UEFA Champions League edition.

As member of Portugal’s national team (with which debuted on 2003), the young man of 23 years old has also demonstrated to be an important figure for, after Euro 2004 in which Portugal ended up as runner-up. For the World Cup 2006 even though his country could not make it further the semifinals, remaining on the fourth place, the performance of the Portuguese was supreme.

The speed, ability, commitment and skills in Ronaldo are characteristics that many players and clubs whish to have, the best example right now is Real Madrid that expects to incorporate him on their lines. The Spaniards was not able to signed him due to the renovation of the succulent contract between the Red Devils and the star, that decided to stay with the squad that had been giving him so many triumphs and saw him grow in his little but successful career.

All the effort made by Ronaldo along this year, recently made him laudable of the Ballon d’Or 2008, prize turns him into the Best Footballer of the Year and places him above other great players, such as Lionel Messi, Fernando Torres and even Kaká, who won the trophy last year.

I Used to Scoff at People Who "Forgot To Eat"

I used to scoff at people who would say they were so busy they «forgot to eat.»

When I was in college, I was an art major and spent many, many hours in the art department building working on projects. I remember being there late at night or working the weekends away, and other students would lament that they hadn’t eaten all day because they were so focused they «forgot.»

How could someone forget to eat??

I never seemed to be able to stop thinking about food, as much as I wanted to. I was either considering when it was time to go eat or scrutinizing if I’d eaten too much or trying to watch portions so that I could lose weight.

One day several years later, I was at marketing conference and invited to a fancy restaurant to join a group of highly successful entrepreneurs. As I looked over the menu, I could see there was nothing less than $50 on the menu. Focusing more on what I was going to order than the people around me, I dropped out of the conversation. I became wrapped up in trying to decide what would be filling but not fattening, the best choice for my money, etc.

Across the table from me was a woman who was absolutely gorgeous. Not just beautiful in the traditional sense, but stunning in every part of her being: the way she carried herself, her laugh, her colorful, form-fitting dress, everything. I was captivated by how comfortable she seemed in her body, classy and poised yet bold.

As the waiter came and took our orders, this woman ordered several rich appetizers, a salad and a main course. I was mildly surprised, wondering where she was going to put all the food since she was very slim.

Throughout the meal, I noticed the woman took a bite here, a bite there… but mostly stayed completely involved in the conversations around her. She seemed completely engaged in the people she was talking with, and disinterested in her plate. As the waiter came and took plates away, the guy next to her commented that she hadn’t touched much.

I can still hear her voice in my head saying, «Yeah, I enjoy the presentation and savoring the best things on the menu, but it’s boring after a few bites.»

I had never thought about food that way before. Food could be boring? It was always something I was either looking forward to or trying not to obsess over… but never boring.

This woman clearly thought about food differently than I did. And, to be completely vein, I could see that clearly her thoughts were serving her figure and her level of enjoyment more than mine were.

Here I had devoted 30-40% of my attention at that dinner wrapped up in what I was ordering, how much it was, if it was too indulgent, etc. rather than being present with the amazing people around me. I was coming from a scarcity mindset both in my attitude towards money as well as food.

This woman clearly didn’t bat an eye at the prices, was quite happy to enjoy savoring the richest bites and was fully attentive to the people around her. She was operating from a place of authentic abundance on multiple levels, and she gave off that vibe. It was captivating to all those around her, including me.

Both the art students from college and this woman stuck out in my mind as I became seriously upset with my relationship with food.

I had grown up in a family that loved to eat; food was involved with socializing, rewarding, playing, relaxing. Forgetting to eat or being so extravagant would have been brushed off as «unhealthy» or «wasteful» – negative connotations.

Yet these people didn’t occur to me now to be unhealthy or wasteful. They simply had another approach. I started to see a whole world of beliefs or «invisible scripts» I had about food (and money, and scarcity). The more I started to look at how other people that I admired approached food, I learned there are reasons OTHER THAN THE FOOD to go to a nice restaurant. I also learned that there were many other ways to think about food, and none are «right» or «wrong.» They’re just different ways-and if the way I was approaching food wasn’t serving me any longer, than I needed to experiment with other ways.

(Likewise with the ways I approach money, or work, or sex… but that’s another rabbit hole too deep to get into here.)

I also realized that if you try to change your approach around the people who are comfortable with the way you have always been, it can be extremely difficult.

Most people aren’t comfortable with change-and they aren’t comfortable with YOU changing because it throws off their perception of you and challenges their own beliefs.

Which is why, If you politely decline a piece of cake at a birthday party, they’ll probably say, «Come on, it’s Susie’s birthday! You can at least have a small piece… «

So not only are you facing questioning your own beliefs, you’re also up against forces that don’t want you to change the way you are. This is why SO MANY people fail to create new habits or routines in their life, even with the best of intentions. It’s a very tough wall to climb.

If I had stayed with my old beliefs and patterns that were comfortable to those around me, I’d still have a binge eating disorder. I’d still be desperate and quietly dying inside, hating myself and losing motivation across all areas of my life.

Guess what? It’s NORMAL to grow, to feel dissatisfied with where things currently are and to yearn for more. Life is about growing, changing and evolving. You see it everywhere around you: in nature, childhood, education, investing, etc.

There’s nothing bad or «wrong» with you for wanting more, or for questioning your current approach to food (or any area of your life). While those around you may suggest that it’s better to stay as you are, I’m here to cheer for you WANTING MORE.

Not just more satisfaction with your relationship with food. More fun. More play. More peace. More wealth. More success.

How are you going to get MORE?

It starts by figuring out what’s keeping you where you’re at.

If you ask yourself why you haven’t already gotten to that «more» point, what’s your answer? What reasoning do you come up with? Keep in mind that your brain is going to rationalize in any way that it can as to why you can’t grow or change. Remember the animal brain? The part that is committed to your survival? That part doesn’t like change. It will fight it in any way that it can, because it’s the unknown where it cannot ensure your survival. So you’re going to have all sorts of excuses coming up when you try to change what you’re doing now.

But before you get too stuck in a battle of wills with yourself, trying to force a new approach, look for people that have achieved that «more» state that you would like for yourself. Who has a relationship with food that you admire? Who has created peace, wealth or success in a way that you would like to?

What’s different about their approach? See if you can guess what beliefs they have about themselves and these areas of their lives.

The more examples you can find, the better. Then experiment. Play with a new approach for a day. If it suits you, keep it for another day.

If it means going into the fanciest restaurant in your city and ordering the most indulgent items on the menu, taking a bite or two of each and then being finished with the meal… try it.

If it means investing in a new coat that’s three times more than what you «should» pay (but you know you’ll wear it for the next 6 years because you love it so much)… try it.

If it means taking a day off from work in the middle of the week to stay at home and watch your favorite movies all day because you need a break… try it.

Whatever you experiment with, the more uncomfortable it feels to do it-the better.

That’s a good indication that you’re on the path to challenging your deeply-rooted beliefs and transforming into the next phase of yourself.

The more, the better…

The Importance of Lunch at a Conference Venue

Liverpool is a great place for shopping but also one favorite by businesses looking for a suitable location in which to have a meeting. Many of the conference venues in Liverpool are in the city center and this means they have great locality to restaurants so that your delegates can have lunch. However, a good tip is to arrange catering within the venue itself so your delegates don't have to leave and you don't run the risk of the meeting over-running due to latecomers returning from the restaurant after lunch! It might sound trivial, but making eating arrangements in preparation for a conference is one of the most important things you can do. The reason for this is simple; people enjoy their food.

Think for a moment, if you will, about being in a conference venue, Liverpool. You have been there for a number of hours and the clock is ticking. The hunger pangs are setting in. Of course you want to be able to take note of the very important conference meeting taking place but your mind is gradually wandering and you start thinking about when lunchtime is going to arrive. That's why it is so vitally important that you plan lunch for your delegates at the conference venue. Liverpool has a great selection of restaurants nearby, but why not ask the venue to organize the catering? Many will gladly oblige.

Make Your Meeting Productive

Many conference event organizers forget to make suitable lunch arrangements and this can leave a bad taste in people's mouths. Those that have traveled from far and wide to Liverpool don't expect to be sat in a conference all day; they want to eat. It's only natural. Of course, one of the benefits of providing a satisfying lunch for your delegates is that they are far more likely to concentrate after they have eaten because they are content and much more settled than in the morning. Conference meetings should be productive and one of the best ways to do this is to ensure you plan a good lunch for your guests.

Take The Pressure Off

Some conference venues in Liverpool have in-house catering and if you want to take the weight off your shoulders a bit, it may be worthwhile discussing lunch arrangements with the venue itself. There are a great number of grand conference venues that offer a wide variety of catering facilities, making it an ideal place to organize a large meeting. Plus, by having the venue itself take care of the catering, this leaves more time for you to plan all the other important elements that make up a successful Liverpool conference. Some venues have the added benefit of being fully licensed, so delegates can enjoy a glass of wine after the stressful, all day meeting. Of course, most conferences on the larger scale tend to run over a number of days, so a fully licensed bar within the venue can be a real asset. Do an online search for Liverpool conference venues that offer this facility.

Use The Time Wisely

If you would rather opt for a meeting room that doesn't have the temptation of alcohol downstairs, there are some smaller venues in Liverpool that might be more suitable, particularly for those that are just having a conference that takes place on only one day. It may also be the case that you ask your delegates to bring a packed lunch with them so that a long lunch break that involves people scurrying off to find restaurants nearby doesn't eat into the valuable meeting time.

Planning a meeting at any conference venue can be a stressful task. However, planning the little extras such as eating arrangements is crucial if you are to have contented, satisfied delegates that are willing to give you their full attention. There's nothing worse than sitting in a meeting and feeling hungry!

UEFA Champions League Group Stage

Summer is over. That only means one thing: the Champions League is back. This year’s joint favourites, Barcelona and Chelsea, have fast become bitter rivals in this competition. That rivalry is certain to intensify since they were drawn into the same group at this early stage of the tournament. The format is as follows: 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stages, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated. Here is an overview of all the groups with predictions on who we expect to win each group.

Group A: Barcelona (-118), Chelsea (+125), Werder Bremen (15/1), Levski Sofia (250/1)

Maybe the Chelsea-Barcelona rivalry won’t be quite as intense at this early stage. Both teams will advance from this group and there is a good chance they will meet again at a later stage of this competition. Chelsea look noticeably shakier this year. Their previously impenetrable defence looks slightly more lax. That will bode ill for the Blues. But unlike the past few years, with two Premiership titles under their belt, this season Jose Mourinho’s explicit goal is to win the Champions League. Still, we have to side with Barcelona here. They are goal scoring machines and should demolish Bremen and Levski, and they are more than capable of scoring against Chelsea. At close to even money, they are worth backing to win this group.

Group B: Bayern Munich (+125), Inter Milan (+163), Sporting Lisbon (6/1), Spartak Moscow (40/1)

Inter is a big price here and are worth backing. They have added strength, quality and depth to their squad and after the Calciopoli scandal were belated awarded last year’s Scudetto in Serie A. Sporting Lisbon are no pushovers, but Inter can and should get past them. There is one slight worry though. Bayern Munich is the sort of team that can run up the score against weak opponents like Spartak Moscow. If Bayern and Inter are level on points, Bayern could well win this group on goal difference.

Group C: Liverpool (-161), PSV Eindhoven (+450), Bordeaux (5/1), Galatasaray (10/1)

Although they are odds-on, it’s hard to look past Liverpool in this group. They are a well-organized side and lifted the CL trophy two years ago. Manger Rafa Benitez is experienced at European competition and should navigate his team through this group with ease. PSV are a shadow of the team they were last season. There is a good chance they won’t finish in the top two of the Dutch league, let alone replicate their above average Champions League form of recent years. Bordeaux and Galatasaray are second-rate clubs in this competition.

Group D: Valencia (-125), Roma (+150), Shakhtar Donetsk (20/1), Olympiakos (29/1)

It’s hard to understand why Roma are underdogs in this group. They are favoured to win this year’s diluted Italian league. Their squad is a lot stronger this season both on paper and judging by their Serie A results so far. But the Romans face tough Spanish competition in this group. Valencia have a disciplined and experienced Champions League side. They are deadly on the counterattack and stifle the offence of their opponents. This looks like a coin flip between Roma and Valencia, so we’ll take the Italians at odds-against. Keep and eye on Olympiakos. They won’t win this group, but, like many Greek teams, they can be dangerous in their home games.

Group E: Lyon (-125), Real Madrid (+163), Steaua Bucharest (10/1), Dynamo Kiev (50/1)

The collapse of Juventus has benefited no team more than Real Madrid. The Spanish giants picked up a handful more Galacticos and one of the world’s top managers, Fabio Capello. They are serious contenders for both the La Liga and Champions League titles this year. But they will have to get past their nemesis in this tournament: Lyon. The French side are perennially underestimated by the bookmakers despite excelling in European competition. We’ll happily back them again to win this group and possibly the whole thing.

Group F: Manchester United (-275), Benfica (+650), Celtic (13/1), FC Copenhagen (50/1)

Man Utd couldn’t have asked for a more favourable draw. But luck is what they’ll need to get any further than this stage. At this short price, it’s not worth betting on the Red Devils to win the group. Copenhagen are a dangerous team, having knocked Ajax out of this competition. They are a huge price to win the group and are worth a small punt. Benfica are solid as ever in Portugal and experienced in the Champions League. They should claim second spot.

Group G: Arsenal (-161), Hamburg (9/1), Porto (9/1), CSKA Moscow (10/1)

Arsenal were the surprise team of the Champions League last year, going all the way to the final and defying expectations with each match. This year, they seem to be overestimated. The Gunners have not yet settled into their new Emirates Stadium. The squad look noticeably uncomfortable and will take more time to jell. In light of the above, it’s worth looking at the others. CSKA are a huge price at 10/1 and the 2005 UEFA Cup champions must be backed to win this group. Russia is an intimidating place for visiting teams and the Muscovites are more than capable of claiming results from their travels.

Group H: AC Milan (-333), Lille (6/1), AEK Athens (25/1), Anderlecht (33/1)

Milan should cruise through this group with relative ease. They are capable of dismantling virtually any team in the world and opponents like Lille, AEK and Anderlecht are hardly dangerous challengers. Lille are solid in France and might hold Milan to a draw in their home leg. As usual, Greek side AEK will be tough at home too, but they are hopeless on their travels. Anderlecht don’t deserve to be in this competition. Even at this short price, take Milan.

Oswestry Town FC

Oswestry has been a home for football for as long as anyone can remember, in fact there are no official records relating to when the team was formed but it is a common perception that Oswestry FC would have been one of the first football teams formed in the world … maybe even the first. Originally born as Oswestry United, friendly matches were played on the local cricket pitch against local teams such as Chirk, Ruabon and the Druids, all of which are from the surrounding areas of Wrexham in North Wales. Oswestry United was a founder member, along with Ruabon, Chirk and Druids of a league which covered North Wales and the Northern west of England known as "The combination".

In 1876, Oswestry became a founder member of the Football Association of Wales, subsequently entering the first ever Welsh cup the following season. Following the war, the team was renamed to Oswestry Town and they began competing in the Welsh Alliance league Oswestry Town would later move to face different competition in the Birmingham league having been crowned champions of the Welsh Alliance in 1924 and desiring new challenges which came in the face of renowned teams such as Telford United, Shrewbury Town and Kidderminster Harriers.

Spells in the Cheshire League, the Southern Premier League and the Northern Premier League would follow put over time Oswestry Town began to struggle both on the pitch and off the pitch as the finances became strained and debt mounted This resulted in the sad sale of their long time home, the Victoria Road Ground and a period where football in Oswestry was suspended, possibly for the long term. Eventually fortunes began to upturn with the use of the Park Hall site situated on the outskirts of the town. Park Hall was an army built facility that already hosted many different sports in the area including Rugby Union and horse riding.

During the clubs stagnant years the face of football had changed with the introduction of a national league of Wales. As mentioned earlier Oswestry Town had been founder members of the Welsh Football Association and so had the right to play within it's league's. Oswestry Town recommenced their football by entering the Welsh Nation League (Wrexham area) and began to clime the pyramid system of welsh football Leagues. Upon reaching the Cymru Alliance league which is one of two feeder leagues to the League of Wales. Oswestry Town won a League and Cup double at the first time of asking. However, sadly they were denied their chance of life in the top tier of Welsh football due to the Park Hall ground not meeting strict stadium requirements of the league. After much fundraising and donations the club were able to raise money to purchase floodlights which brought the ground up to the correct standard and another successful Cymru Alliance season in 1999/2000 was met with further financial difficulties which again prevented the move to the League of Wales . This time the financial difficulties were too severe for the club to overcome and Oswestry Town have now played their last match. Football in Oswestry continues, at Park Hall due to the relocation of The New Saints who were previously based in nearby Lantsantfraid.
