How Should I Write My Brag Sheet for the Common App?

What should my Brag Sheet look like? It has to be so short!

One of the hardest things about the Common App is cutting down your long list of achievements into a tiny 500-character brag sheet. It’s almost infuriating that Ivy League Schools expect to get to know you in such short a space!

Cramming your resume into such a small space is actually a pretty good exercise in picking out the extremely important from the merely significant.

Here’s my three-step process that can help you organize your brag sheet in a way that will look impressive to Ivy League Schools.

1. Categorize your achievements. List out all your awards, leadership positions, membership/volunteer positions, and any miscellaneous items.

2. Further break down these groups by interest, whether they be school-related, community service, job-related, athletic, artistic, etc.

3. Finally, pick the best item from each category to use in your brag sheet.

Never repeat yourself in your application; if you have a great SAT score, you should let your Ivy League hear about it from the College Board. Same goes for your 4.0– it should be apparent from your transcript, so don’t waste space mentioning it in your brag sheet.

My brag sheet just fit the required length, and I started out with a three-page resume.

IB (6 SL Calculus/7 SL Chemistry), AP (all 5’s), AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Semifinalist, Philosophy Club President/Junior Representative, 7th Public Forum Nationals 2007, Radio Show Co-Host, NFL Academic All-American, Quarterfinals Nationals Extemp Com, 4th ASU USX (US Extemporaneous), State Champion Public Forum, State 2nd USX, NHS Treasurer, 3 year Varsity Softball Letterman, Team Captain, Scholar Athlete, Two Time Qualifier NFL Nationals, Outstanding HS Junior Mathematics 2006, Varsity Quiz Regional Champions 2005

I put my important academic items first and made sure they covered different aspects of my education. The goal here was to show that I did well on a tests that had national standards. College admissions officers will recognize IB (International Baccalaureate) and AP (Advanced Placement), so use their acronyms to save space. I scored well on both tests so I listed both, but if you only did well on one of them, focus on that one.

Next section I dedicated to extra-curricular activities that demonstrate leadership (Philosophy Club President and Junior Representative) and national awards such as NFL (National All-American).

I had actually won quite a few awards, especially for speech-and-debate, so it was hard to leave most of them out. The ones that made it into my brag sheet were the national tournament awards and the state tournament awards. Similarly, you should prioritize your awards, with international being a must-list, then national, state, and finally local.

The last section of the brag sheet, I listed things that look great but weren’t all that significant to me personally. This is a good area to put awards and activities that you don’t plan to talk about elsewhere (for me, Varsity Quiz and co-hosting a radio show).

The hardest thing is deciding what to cut out. For me, this included being a member of IB Honor Society, Statistics Club, Mu Alpha Theta. I didn’t stand out as a leader in any of those. I also decided not to mention my success at local speaking competitions through Rotary International, and the club I started to get people to vote (the «Caucus Club»), since those were more obscure items that would take more effort to explain than was allotted. Lastly, I omitted my National Music Teacher Association Tests. I practiced piano and took the tests up to Level 8, but I knew this wouldn’t be an outstanding achievement since I had several friends applying who had all passed Level 10, and had even competed nationally in piano.

On your brag sheet, remember to list your most impressive accomplishments that don’t get enough coverage in the rest of your application. That way the Ivy League admissions board will get a more complete picture of you.

You can find more information about writing your brag sheet and more at ivyleagueadmissions.org

Kensington and Chelsea on a Budget

Those not that familiar with London are still aware that Kensington and Chelsea are two of the more expensive and glamorous areas of the big city. So, when you are looking for something different and you’re on a fairly tight budget, where do you start?

Of course when staying in the West End, visiting one of the many museums are excellent options for an enjoyable day out. The Science Museum, Natural History Museum and The Victoria and Albert Museum are all located here and you can visit them for free almost any day of the year.

Head a little further out of the city to Chelsea and you will come across the oldest botanical garden in London – the Chelsea Physic Garden. At only £9 for adults and £6 for students and children it offers a little tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Golborne Road market, although connected to Portobello Road offers something a bit different, with a mix of stalls offering a variety of international foods and goods. The area is often referred to as Little Morocco due to the many Moroccan restaurants and shops, so there is definitely a bit of an international feel to the area. Markets are held here every day except Sunday.

Kensington Gardens and Palace are an excellent way to spend some time exploring. The Palace is now home to Wills, Kate and little Prince George so you’ll feel a sense of royalty wandering around, and perhaps you’ll even catch a glimpse of the Royal family. The area is beautiful, any time of year, go and soak up some horticulture!

Another area to enjoy the outdoors is Brompton Cemetery. It might sound a little odd to spend time in graveyard, but this is one of the finest and oldest Victorian graveyards in all of Britain. There are over 200,000 stones and it is considered to be one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries.

Lastly, the London Olympia Exhibition Centre is home to a variety of music shows, food fairs, business events and so much more. Every week there is something different to visit and a lot of the events are free or very cheap.

So, if you are looking for a bit of class on your London city break, but can’t quite afford to dine on the Kensington Roof Gardens, there is still plenty to see and do without burning a hole or three in your pocket.

The England Manager Job – Possible Candidates for the English FA to Consider

I have been watching the attempt by the English FA to name a new manager with great interest, it’s a great way to see how not to do things! Even the way they approached Luis Felipe Scolari was a joke – they knew he couldn’t possibly accept the job before the World Cup but still offered him the job! Yes the FA is a truly wondrous organisation, capable of ineptitude beyond the wildest dreams of the likes of Mr. Bean!

With the only other truly ‘foreign’ coach in the running, Guus Hiddink also ruled out, and Arsene Wenger not interested at the moment anyway, who does that leave? Well I am giving my assessment of the possibilities:

1) Steve McLaren

OK so he’s got Middlesbrough to the UEFA Cup final but he has hardly inspired confidence in me. His team play a poor brand of football, not exactly exciting, despite having money to spend. To my mind they should be at least in Tottenham’s position fighting for 4th with the money that has been spent and the facilities they have. Their training facilities are amongst the best in the world, far superior to Liverpool’s Melwood facility for instance. Yet they continue to struggle in the EPL and not just that but they laboured to reach the UEFA Cup final. It may be harsh but Steau Bucharest are hardly Juventus are they? Yet ‘Boro still had to scrape through by the skin of their teeth! So for me I would have to say no he isn’t good enough.

2) Sam Allardyce

What can you say about Big Sam? His team are capable of playing some of the best football in the top flight, but tend to rely on scrapping their way through. But, unlike McLaren, the money he has available is very low, he has had to accept he can’t get the Yakubu’s of this world and has adjusted his tactics to suit the players he has. The reason I would give him the job if it was my decision are these:

a) his players play for him, there’s never any suggestion they don’t give 100%

b) he will leave no stone unturned on the coaching side to get the best from his players – if giving them ballet lessons will improve their job then he will have them taking ballet lessons no matter who they are (I for one would pay good money to watch Wayne Rooney taking ballet lessons!).

c) he’s not a yes man in any way – he would do it his way rather than allowing the FA any input.

So yes Sam is the man as far as I am concerned – though I would of been just as happy with Hiddink, Scolari, Benitez or Wenger.

3) Martin O’Neill

The first problem, of course with O’Neill is his nationality, though I, for one, don’t care about that, many others do. The second problem is would he want the job? He has enough on his plate at the moment and might not be in a position to accept it. A truly great motivator, and that is one of the main tasks of a national coach, but, and this is a big but, his tactical ability is suspect. But still its good enough to put him in as strong a position as Sam Allardyce in my mind.

4) Stuart Pearce

He would have to be a huge gamble, not because of his lack of experience but because of the bad run his team are on. Personally I think he has to be involved in some capacity if the FA can persuade him. Though my impression of Pearce suggests he would probably pay the FA to be involved in some capacity with the Englad team! But not the man for the job, yet, for me.

5) Alan Curbishley

He performed wonders with Charlton and has to be at least considered for the position. But I believe we will see him managing Newcastle United rather than England, purely because Charlton aren’t seen as a big enough club. I am sure he believes the same and that was behind his leaving the club – he knows the club don’t match his ambitions at the moment. Without European football he won’t get the England job.

The other thing I would have to say is why doesn’t the FA get more of the top coaches involved? Its criminal to have a coach of the quality of Dario Gradi not involved with the FA to sort out their youth policy. If one man knows how to produce young players its him.

Though of course that would take a degree of competence the FA is incapable of and also the swallowing of pride and accepting that maybe someone else knows better about football!

Guide To Be A Successful Soccerpunter

Why becomes a soccer bettor one may ask? Where it is considered a negative occupation where it is often regarded as non productive, immoral behaviour. well as for every other thing everything there is the pros n cons.if you able to use it to your advantage it could be becomes your full-time occupation or a second income. morever, soccer betting is a big thriving business where it is prevalent throughout the worldBy the use of statistics, experience and practice, an astute gambler can consistently beat the posted odds .however to do so one must behave in a manner consistent with success. one thing a successful bettor must do is to continually learn.

Handicapping

There is no single method that is considers the best method, everyones tackles the soccer problem differently, one thing for sure is the harder one works intelligently and practically and the more experience he has the more positive results he will realised.

Objective approach

The use of statistic to help the bettor to determine his picks. It should be noted that statistic are fundemental but its how they are used that makes the difference between winning and losing. however if everyone comes to the same conclusions the oddsmaker could still eliminate any advantages by adjusting the line to keep everyone guessing. either way it is to the bookies advantage.

Subjective approach

After yrs of handicapping the sub-conscious mind help the bettor to finalise his picks. when he starts to win the bettor will get carried away however if his results turns negative his emotions and his mind will short virtually making the bettor ineffective. it is extremely important the bettor at this time knows to hold back and observe for his form to pick up before betting again.

Trends

It should be noted that the best trends are those that are unique, valid and relatively unknown. any seasoned soccer bettor knows that once the trend becomes too popular the linesmen will adjust the line to leave people lost. when using trends you should notice whether it is getting stronger and weaker?

Bankroll mangement

Definition-the amount of money you set aside for betting and not hose for paying bills, groceries or money even when lost would not cause much unbalance in the bettors life.

How much to bet per game?

I would suggest 5% of your bankroll to be used for betting and not to bet more than 3 matches per day, reason because its very difficult to pick winners for every match and the most likely results are you will have a few winners and a few losers resulting in minimal bankroll growth which is the most likely results or worse lose all the bets which is highly possible. Another very important reason for this is you are able to gauage more accurately how much you will lose should you indeed lose.

Summary

To begin with, one must understands what he is up against, there is no method or systems that could contiunues to win every game , everyday, every week , month or year. good consistent handicapping means selecting more winners than losers. in order to be a successful bettor one must give lots of thoughts to why is the results this way ?and is there any reason behind it. when you manage to reveal the meaning behind it it is the time you feed back on the fat cow(bookmaker).

Soccer forum

I have seen a great prevalence use of soccer forums where soccer bettors post their picks. it is often noted that a lot of beginners try to note down those tipsters who is in hot form meaning those posting the corrects picks and then bet big following them .i strongly discourage people from doing so cause they were betting their hard earn money on people whom they never even meet or know and blindly follows theirs picks .this is very unhealthy why? cause the bettors himself have failed to come out with his own picks ,where he could be learning from his own mistakes and who knows those that are in the forum might be bookies themselves posting picks to lure the ignorant ones to be hooked.

Getting prepared mentally

One should be prepared mentally for losing and winnings cause either way it would lead to what I call a gambling syndrome. when the bettors keeps winnings he will be feeling over the moon during his hot streats and starts spending money like he is a king overnite however once he starts hitting the rough patch he will be losing sleeps if he bet a very substantial amount or can’t concentrate in his work. this is very unhealthy and how to curb this problem?By following a systematic money-management programs.

Is it possible to strike rich in a very short period say 1 month? It is possible for a soccer bettor to strike rich but that is provided he is extremely lucky during that month and makes more than 60% corrects picks and of those correct picks are those he bets bigs and the remainder 40% lossess are those he bets small. however one knows that what goes up must come down and the winners are those who are able to tide over the rough patch and then starts winning back when his form is back

Is it important to know all about the soccer team , soccer players statistic n does that makes me a better soccer better?

The answer is no cause soccer betting arena is a place where the booksmakers earns their money if by knowing every details could make you rich then all the soccer writers, soccer magazines editors are the ones who are driving big cars and living in big houses.

What makes a true soccer bettor an expert?

The ability to convert a given bankroll into profits based on practical bankroll management program and against some standard of odds and over a large number of games and over a period of time.

How to become a true soccer expert?

1. He should keep a record of all that days opening odds and closing odds. 2. print out the each respective wide table. 3. Write down the score 4. reason why the results to be this way and is there any trends. of course in order to look for particular trends you need soccer records. 5. keep meticulous and honest records of his play decisions and their results. this will teach him his strength and weakness. 6. learn how to bet on his own handicapping in order to realize the greatest profit. he then must discipline his action and play in respect of this plan in order to get the best results. 7. learn how to tackle his emotions as well as personal problems out of his decisions. if this becomes too difficult he should stop playing. 8. be constantly on the alert to make changes to his handicapping methods and techniques. 9. set up a plan of action for bankroll management and stick diligently to it.

Does soccer betting involves luck?

Answer: no, cause soccer results is preplanned meaning before the matches starts the results is already out. If you have been betting soccer for a period of time and keeping soccer records deligiently you would have discovered a trend and realized that its a cycle.

So which leagues are you gd in?

for each people they they dwell in different leagues for me I specialize in only 4 leagues namely EPL, Italy serieA , Spanish primera and german bundesliga.

How to tackle soccer cups and normal weekend domestic league?

There are lots of soccer matches throughout the soccer season and the techniques involves in dealing with different matches differs differently and at different timing of the season.

Does the bookmaker lose money?

ANS : yes there are times but seldom. bookmakers lose money then the strong team win throughout the tournamnet eg euro2000 but that is short-term loss. They will continues to win the soccer punters money as long as there are soccer matches. Why? Cause there will be different opionions from different soccer punters just the vigourish/water money alone is able to cover their losses and that is excluding fixed match where they win even more. Another useful tool they are armed with is they understands that all gamblers have a common weakness. They bet bigger and bigger when winning and bets even bigger to chase their loss when losing.in either case it is to the bookmakers edge.

Contary to the belief of many where they think they are winning the bookmakers money , it is the other soccer punters ie, their friend’s money whom they are winning.the only way to bust the bookmaker/bookies is not to bet or share part of the pie the bookmaker is having.

Soccer cups

There are namely a few more popular ones are uefa cup, uefa champions league, league cup, fa cup, worthington cup, international friendlies, Italian cup, Spanish cup.

Why is it important to do a form analysis on oneself?

It is because people when they are in a winning streats they tend to win more frequent cause I find that it got to do with ones confidence level. they becomes not afraid to lose and I believes that if one believe in himself strongly he will perform much better than one who is afraid of losing.

Betting strategy

Overview- When you do keep records you could trace your own form and make adjustment from there.

Flat betting strategy

This is the strategy I use when I am determining which way my form is going. up or down. Another reason to test out new leagues where I’m unfamiliar.

PROS – this strategy would produce a even amt of risk for money wagered but however if you are able to pick on the right team you could earn a average profit, CONS -but due to the water money and the increase in the no.of bets before you could see a tidy handsome profit this will constitue to be the downside.

Progressive betting strategy

I adopt the progressive betting strategy method which is to multiply my previous winnings by 0.5 and use it for the next bet which is the strategy I adopt when my form are good.ie when 3 or more wins consecutively. Reason why? There is a Chinese saying «hit the iron while its hot» which I find it to be very true cause there are many opportunities in soccerbetting where if you are able to recognize it and bet bigger than usual, PROS- there is a potential higher return rate then if you flat bet.CONS-when you do adjust your bet amt you are relatively exposing yourself to more risk this is the tradeoff where you could lose potentially more.

Reduced betting strategy

When do you adopt this is when you have been picking the wrong team all the time example say 3 straight lose which is very common caused I realized that this is the time where people starts to bet big to chase their loss. this is very wrong caused when one is down on luck or the bookmaker has adjusted the line to confuse the bettor they should stay calm n reduced their bets or not bet at all.PROS- reduced money lost and try to minimize serious damage to original bankroll.CONS-if the picks do win you could not cover back your previous loss due to reduction in wager.this is the trade-off.

Why is it important to find the right time frame before u bet and does it make a difference?

It is important because if now you are in a losing streats it is best to control oneself before you jump into it and wack hard to chase back your lossess most likely you will lose .it is best to make own prediction first and see if your form is back if it is slowly getting back now is time to jump in cause once you run out of bullets during your losing streats it is very difficult to fight back.

Lionel Messi – The Greatest Footballer Ever?

The footballing world watched on in utter amazement and delight yesterday as Messi's Barcelona put 7 goals past a hapless Bayer Leverkusen side in a UEFA Champions League game at the Nou Camp. For the first time ever, we saw one person score 5 goals in a Champions league game and it so happened to be no other person than Lionel Messi.

Yes, the number of goals may be a new record which I think he can better in the years ahead, but it's more the manner and the sheer class with which he scored the goals that made many a football enthusiast admire this rare talent that has emerged in this generation.

Of course, we all knew about his ability already but his display yesterday has put him in another League. The way in which he made the difficult act of scoring spectacular goals look so easy was just a joy to watch. One was a left foot lob, another a delightful right foot lob, then a careful control from an acute angel, a laser-guided placement with his left foot and then a drive through a number of opposing players. His unique sense of picking the right moments in games to do what he does best is simply quite extraordinary.

He has often been compared with the Legendary Pele and his fellow country man Diego Maradona as to who is the greatest player ever but I will dare to say that even these legends will secretly admit that it's just a matter of time before this boy from the backside of Rosario, Argentina supersedes their achievements if he hasn't already done so. Considering the fact that Messi is only 24 years of age and has at least 10 years of top flight football in him, the prospect of what he could achieve can be incredible.

It's almost inconceivable that the world would never have seen what happened yesterday had it not been for the Barcelona scouts who intervened to save his career when he was being given up on. River Plate, one of the biggest clubs in the Argentine First Division who wanted to sign him from Newell Old Boys Club in Rosario, soon discovered that his inability to endure playing for 90 minutes was due to the absence of a growth hormone that hindered his normal physical development as a person. He looked so tiny for his age at the time that, they were not sure if he could develop physically to meet the demands of the modern game even though his talent was never in dispute. The money needed to put him on a special dieting program was just too much they couldn't afford it. They gave up on him but thankfully, he was spotted and taken to Barcelona's La Masia's training academy and the rest, they say, is history.

Talking about humble beginnings, his first contract was signed on a white handkerchief because his Dad was so frustrated with the directors of Barcelona at the time due to their indecision about his son's future that, he gave Charles Rexach, the Director of football at the time a brief window of opportunity to make up his mind. Either they give him an answer there and then or forget about Messi forever once they fly back to Argentina. His exploits today has proven that it doesn't matter where you begin in life but rather, it's about you believing in your unique abilities and giftings given to you by God regardless of your size, age, race or gender.

As great as the current Barcelona team is at the moment, it is my firm conviction that if you pluck Messi out of this team, they would not have achieved as much as they have. He brings a certain quality to the team which puts them way above any other team at the moment. When games are tight, he is the only one that can come up with some special instinctive play capable of breaking down opposing teams whereby creating opportunities to score goals.

The flip side of the above argument is that, even the greatest players will find it very difficult to perform at their optimum when they are either surrounded by mediocre players or the team they find themselves in doesn't play to their strengths. This may well be the reason why he is yet to hit the same dizzy heights with the Argentine National Team as he's done time and time again with his Club side.

With all that he's achieve so far, hearing him speak just makes you believe why he may go on to accomplish much more. He seems to exude this important virtue of humility which is vital not only to help get you to the top of your game but more importantly, to stay there. There isn't any air of "superstardom" about him. His lifestyle is just simple, both on and off the pitch. I'm yet to hear any news about Messi involved in any "off the pitch" incidents that you so often associate with English Premiership players. He just seems to enjoy playing in huge stadia as much as he did when he played on the streets of Rosario.

So is he the greatest player ever? The legendary Pele seems to think he is the best by far in the world at the moment. Most football Managers, fellow professionals and the football community at large seem to think he is the best ever even though he's yet to lead Argentina to Word Cup glory. I would not dispute that either. I think we haven't seen the best of him yet. He is simply sublime.

World Cup Goalkeepers – Jens Lehmann

Born in Essen, Germany in 1969, Jens Lehmann’s soccer career kicked off in 1989 with FC Schalke where he played for almost 10 years before moving on to AC Milan in 1998.

Said to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Lehmann created a name for himself while with Schalke. However, after signing up with Milan, his performance took a dip and he was dropped from the squad after just five matches. He made a decision to move back to Germany and signed up with Borussia Dortmund where he went on to win the German League title in 2002. Lehmann then went on to sign up with the Gunners in July 2003 and was seen as Arsene Wenger’s answer to replace the ageing David Seaman.

During his first season with Arsenal, Lehmann played in every match and the Gunners went on to clinch the FA Premier League title without dropping a match. Lehmann, who many say has also undergone stringent mental training to reach his potential often comes out of his goal to intercept passes. He was man of the match during his club’s performance against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup Final after he made numerous brilliant saves to keep the score at 0-0 after extra time.

Lehmann then went on to save a fierce shot from Paul Scholes during the penalty shoot-out, handing a 5-4 victory to Arsenal.

However, one doubt remained on the mind of fans as they pondered his temperament following several «incidents» during the games. The German goalkeeper first donned his gloves for the national team in February 1998 in a match against Oman and to date has earned more than 25 caps for his country. He has however been in a constant tussle for a place between the posts with Oliver Kahn, from Bayern Munich. As many will be comparing him with Kahn, Lehmann will require a lot of mental strength to deal with the pressure. So, mental training should become an important part of any footballer’s training program today.

However, luck was on his side and according to a recent statement from the German Football Federation, Lehmann has won the race to keep goal for his country. The issue of who would don the Number 1 jersey has dominated the German football scene and the pressure was intense on national coach Jurgen Klinsmann to make a decision.

Public polls had recently favoured Lehmann, whom many said was in fine and consistent form.

David Beckham

David Beckham is a well-known English football team player. Playing in the England team under the number 7 which makes for him great significance at this 7 number takes him to the heights of success. His football career started with the training sessions at Manchester of FC Barcelona and he gained there well enough training that he played from Manchester against West Ham United in 1986.

His parents were Manchester United’s fan so they help him raising his moral for the football playing professional career. His attributes for number 7 also from the reason being David Beckham debut for UEFA champion’s league on 7th December 1994. Beckham make himself good at right sided midfielder rather than right winger and get his position maintained as a midfielder. He has been playing for Manchester united but despite that he was not in the England team’s squad until Euro 96. He was given number 10 shirts at first but when number 7 shirt players retired he was able to get his lucky number 7 jersey which makes him go all round the world making his name with the prominent figure of 7.

Well his career get little shocked in the 1999-2000 session when he committed a foul and press blamed him that after marriage he isn’t performing well so must be disqualified from the team but manager gave him a chance to strike back for his team. On 10th April 2002 Beckham was injured badly and broke his left metatarsal bone causing severe injury so was unable to play for premiere league at that time.

Well after that injury Manchester United was keen to trade Beckham with FC Barcelona but rather than going for Barcelona Beckham signed a 35 million euros contract with Real Madrid and started his career in Real Madrid’s team in 2003. In July 2204 while Beckham was in Spain for his training a man tried to assassinate him taking petrol cane inside his house trying to burn the whole apartment but guard stop him making Beckham his wife Victoria and his children safe.

On 11th January 2007 Real Madrid’s coach announced that Beckham will not be any more the part of his team so Beckham announced his new team contract which he was going to join on 1st July 2007 with Los Angeles Galaxy. In the meantime he was asked to come to Hollywood for a movie so he becomes half star as well as a football player and get a good interaction with Tom Cruise as well.

In the 2008 he was loan to Milan for a time being where he played for a little while and said he will not be staying in A.C Milan for long but will return to Los Angeles Galaxy soon. So he backed up for Galaxy in 2009 again making his career in Los Angeles Galaxy again. In November it was announced that Beckham will be again loan with Milan for the second time in January 2010 and he was again played for A.C Milan for the next time. So finally being in the Los Angeles Galaxy football club, he is making his career keep on going in a healthy stream and making a good approach towards success.

David Beckham played under number 32 in Milan and he was always been the good player and he has a lots of fan all over the world. He played a good international career as well in England’s team making them go up in ranking and getting a good name from there as well. He was amongst those few players of football who get their name known in a very short period of time and was well known to the people making fans all over and getting success in a very short period of time in his professional life.
