Barnsley FC – Neil Redfearn, A Midfield General

Arguably Barnsley’s most influential and talented footballer, Neil Redfearn was instrumental in helping the Tykes achieve promotion to the English Premier League in 1997.

Redfearn’s career stretched from 1982 to 2008, he played 851 games and scored 176 goals. He started is long career at Bolton Wanderers but it was a move from Oldham Athletic to Barnsley in 1991 that catapulted him to new heights. Redfearn had a great match day engine and having all the traits required of a good quality midfielder he was given the club captaincy as well as becoming the regular penalty taker for the club. In an era where drinking was not discouraged and an athletes diet was not as strict as it is today, Redfearn rarely missed a game through injury or illness.

Sat in the second tier of English football, manager Danny Wilson began to assemble a Barnsley team that was able to challenge for a place in English football’s holy grail, the Premier League. Clint Marcelle, Andy Liddell, Paul Wilkinson, Matty Appelby and John Hendrie all came into Wilson’s side in the search for promotion.

In the 1996/97 season Redfearn as ever lead by example. His superb attitude on and off the field was admired by everyone associated with the club. Barnsley got off to a terrific start to the season winning their first five games. The Tykes would only win one of their next eight drawing five and losing two. The Midfield-General was setting his standards high on the pitch, talking with his feet he had already scored eight league goals going into the middle of November.

A double winning season over rivals Sheffield United and a 2-0 home win against Manchester City helped Wilson’s men secure second place and automatic promotion to the Premier League. It was Redfearn’s and Barnsley’s finest hour. The club captain missed just one game all season and scored 17 goals, he was a club hero.

The Premier League was not a success for the Tykes, relegation lead to the departure of Wilson to rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Redfearn left for £1 million to Chartlton Athletic. Redfearn scored a brace in a controversial 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool. He showed that he had the ability to play in the top tier of English football.

In what was a colourful career, Redfearn was a superb servant to the game. He knew where the back of the net was. There are plenty of managers up and down the country that would love to have a player of Redfearn’s ability, commitment and professionalism amongst their ranks today.

It's Not About The Money?

The most recent example of this is DeMarco Murray who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys and played 4 season with them.

The original contract that he signed as a rookie was at its end. When this happens the player is eligible for free agency where any team can offer him a new contract in hopes of getting that player.

The Philadelphia Eagles offered 8 million per year and the Cowboys offered 6 million per year to stay with them. Would loyalty to the team that drafted him out of college and gave him a chance to play in the NFL along with familiarity with players, coaches, staff, and the city in which he lives win out?

Nope, he accepted the Eagles offer.

When he was interviewed by the media he was quoted as saying calmly "It's not about the money" as so many athletes in his position as soon as the ink dries and that rich new contract.

It's not about the money?

Where he loses his credibility with me is when mentions the reason he signed with the Eagles was because he wanted to win a championship.

Really DeMarco?

Let me get this straight, you just left a team that made it to the second round of the playoffs and won their division. They also have the best offensive line which opens huge holes for you to run through.

So for his statement to make sense he must be going to an even better team than the Cowboys if he wants to win a championship right?

Wrong!

He is leaving to go to a team that did not make the playoffs and had one of the worst offensive lines in football. A bad offensive line means not very many holes for a running back to run through not to mention a shortened career because he will be taking a lot more hits.

But hey "It's not about the money" right?

C'mon DeMarco let's keep it real.

To be fair It's not just him … with most high profile athletes it's about ego and the respect they feel they get when they are offered more money and this leads to one of the biggest ego boosters; status among peers. Why else would someone leave the close friends they have bonded with for the past 4 years, the familiarity with coaches, not to mention the hassle involved in uprooting their family to another state.

Technically it may about the money (The actual paper it's written on) but it is ALL about what money represents and that's fine, let's not pretend that it's not; just be honest and keep it real. Instead of having to watch the media interview an athlete calm, cool, and collectively say it's not about the money just give it to us straight, look the reporter in the eye say what Jerry McGuire famously said "Show me the money!"

A History of the Chelsea Flower Show

The origins of the Chelsea Flower Show is as rich and varied as the abundance of stunning horticulture on display in it's gardens. Before it became the world's number one venue for lovers of flowers and garden architecture, the exhibition was the centerpiece of The Royal Horticultural Society Great Spring Show. This was first held in the Spring of 1862, and the original site was located at Kensington. This was a popular event in the calender and as a result, ran for some twenty-six years until 1888.

The decision was then made to relocate the annual Great Spring Show to a more central location in the city, so as to entice even more visitors. The selected venue was the Temple Gardens, near the Enbankment and this was an instant hit with more exhibits being displayed than ever before. Not only was it capturing the imagination of the public, but also suppliers of plants, flowers and seed were drawn to it as a means of gaining further business.

The Great Spring Show ran until 1912, when a one-off Royal International Horticultural Exhibition was launched and a larger, more suitable site was needed. It was down to the eminent horticulturist, Sir Harry Veitch to locate the new venue. Eventually, and to some surprise, he chose the eleven acres of Chelsea Royal Hospital grounds to host the Exhibition. Such was the success of this elaborate event, that all concerned believed it to be the perfect venue for the Great Spring Show. And so, in the Spring of 1913, the Show was relocated again to the Chelsea site, which is where it has remained to this day.

It has been an incredibly hardy exhibition, with only the two World Wars having interrupted it's annual celebration of all things horticultural. The success of the Chelsea Flower Show has grown exponentially through the years and is now well known as being the top attraction in the horticulture calendar. It welcomes visitors from around the world to walk through the myriad of beautiful exhibits on display. It is a location very much close to the Royal Family's heart, and several of the family pay visits to a special preview of the exhibition.

The gardens themselves breathe fresh life and inspire new generations of gardeners and followers of horticulture, often creating new fashions and trends as each year passes and this will no doubt continue on into the future.

The Chelsea Flower Show has survived through all weathers, wars and riots to promote it's stunning attractions year on year and is surely the benchmark for all other horticulture shows. It's long history is indelibly woven into the fabric of what makes it such a successful and popular event.

4 Reasons to Make and Use the Versatile Oland Tool

Woodworking tool suppliers have risen to the challenge of the woodturner’s desire for more and better tools. Most woodturners are self taught with the result that beginners are not sure what tools to use and can become convinced that a new tool will greatly increase their woodturning ability. Quickly they realize that a great deal of money can be spent on tools and in fact many turners own tools with a value greater than that of their wood lathe itself. The Oland tool is a change from this position with its value and versatility.

There are 4 things to consider when thinking of adding this tool to your woodturning tool arsenal.

1. Typically the Oland tool is made in the home shop. This a member of the family of tools known an inserted tip tool. Quite simply, these are designed to be easy to make and maintain in the home shop. A shaft is drilled and tapped to hold a high speed steel cutting tip, the shaft is inserted into a handle turned by the woodturner, and the tip is placed in the shaft. Once sharpened it is ready to go for a fraction of the cost of most commercial tools.

2. Tools wear out with use and especially with sharpening. Every time a tool is used, a bit of steel is ground away. Woodturners tend to sharpen much more often than most other woodworkers and use grinders instead of honing stones. Grinders remove more steel than do stones and the tools wear away faster than regular chisels. The Oland tool uses a cutting tip that lasts well and is easily replaced for one or two dollars. Plus it is not necessary to get used to a tool that steadily becomes shorter and then learn to use a newly purchased tool of regular length. It is no great chore, but can be a bit off putting for some.

3. Woodturners use gouges for spindles and bowls. These gouges are of different shape, sharpening style, and generally length. In particular, beginners usually start off with spindles and spindle gouges almost always part of beginner woodturning sets of tools. Soon the beginner wants to try faceplate turning and usually bowls. The spindle gouges are not suited for bowls and bowl gouges often cost more than the whole beginner set. Oland tools may be used for either spindles or faceplate work and are ideally suited for bowl turning and at a cost of less than most single gouges let alone a set.

4. Tips for the Oland tool are easily replaced and may be ground in an infinite variety of shapes and angles. The most familiar is a side view of forty-five degrees and a top view of the tip slightly rounded. However it is simple to have tips with sharper angles for speciality cuts, the edges brought back for cuts similar to an Irish grind on a bowl gouge or less angle for scraping the inside of a hollow form. Individual, inexpensive cutting tips with various grinds are easily kept and quickly exchanged in a few seconds.

The Oland tool is a great addition to the woodturner’s tool arsenal. It is easy to make and simple to maintain as well as being a versatile cutting tool for both spindles and bowls. Woodturners can use it to make a great craft even more enjoyable.

A Profile of Samuel Eto’o

One of the ironies of Samuel Eto’o playing for FC Barcelona is that he originally joined arch-rivals Real Madrid, who immediately put him out on loan; first to second division CD Leganes; then to first division Espanyol after playing just one league match for Madrid; and finally to Mallorca. He did so well at the latter club that they signed him for a club record and became the highest scorer in the history of the club with a total of 54 goals between 2000 and 2004.

The Cameroon striker signed to FC Barcelona after a series of negotiations between Barcelona, Mallorca and Real Madrid who had retained an option on him. On one hand Madrid didn’t require him in the team as they already had two strikers in the form of Ronaldo and Raul; on the other hand they didn’t want him to play for Barcelona, a club that was looking for a quality striker to cement the attack after they were unable to come to an agreement with midfielder Edgar Davids, who had spent the second half of the 2003-2004 season on loan to the Catalan club.

With Eto’o in place as striker and Ronaldinho as attacking mid-fielder, Samuel Eto’o quickly proved to be good value for money and scored a total of 24 league goals in the 2004-2005 season. Although he helped FC Barcelona to take the league title, he narrowly missed the title of top goal scorer in La Liga.

However, at the celebrations that followed at the Nou Camp he gave speech in which he openly criticised Real Madrid, apparently venting the bitterness he felt for being passed over by the club in favour of being put on loan. He later had to retract his statement and issue an apology.

The following year Samuel Eto’o was able to improve of his league score and with a total of 26 goals he narrowly took the «Pichichi» crown, just one goal ahead of David Villa from Valencia. His strong performance on the pitch saw him also score six Champions League goals, helping to propel Barcelona all the way to the final against Arsenal. He was strongly implicated in the result as first the Arsenal goalkeeper was sent off for a foul against Eto’o in the first 20 minutes; failing to capitalise on the one man advantage, Eto’o equalised in the 76th minute from a pass from Larsson and Belletti scored the winning goal a few minutes after.

On the basis of a strong season Samuel Eto’o was awarded the title of UEFA Champion’s League Best Forward as well as Best African Player for the third year running.

Who are the Agents and the Company Behind the Transfer of Theo Walcott?

Theo is on the books of Key Sports Management, and is looked after by Colin Gordon the man who said «Football clubs and chairmen know who in the game is corrupt, so why do they still use them? I would question the motives of a large number of managers, chief executives and chairmen in the game».

In a week when sports management companies and player agents come under the spotlight after a statement issued by Mike Newell the manager of Luton town football club, we ask what is involved in a deal involving the transfer a 16 year old kid to a top premiership club?

Most regular fans who turn up week in week out to watch football in the uk don’t like to dwell to long on what they describe as «those vile leeches» that are behind the move of top players preferring to base there support and loyalty on the game of old played during the 70,s and 80,s.

The position of Southampton football club

Saints are in a corner when it comes to keeping Theo their hand being forced to sell by the footballers agent and management company, Those agents are rumored to have issued an ultimatum to Rupert Lowe, either agree a deal with Arsenal, or Walcott will exercise a release clause in his scholarship contract, meaning he will become a free agent and Saints will only get compensation from a tribunal this is expected to be around £500,000 with a follow on payment of £500,000 after a certain number of games.

The alternative is to sell, with Arsenal the front runners to bag the wonder kid after making an offer of £10 million.

Chelsea are believed to be keeping a close eye on developments with there chairman Roman Abramovich rumored to be ready to step in with an offer of £15 million.

So who could get what out of the Theo Walcott deal?

Taking the transfer of Wayne Rooney who moved from Everton to Manchester united for roughly £25 million during August 2004 as an example:

When Rooney joined United it was reported that Manchester United paid Rooney’s agent an extra fee – «an incentive» – to ensure they got their man.

United paid Proactive Sports Management a sum of £1.5m as recorded in the shareholders statement «Fees payable to Proactive Sports Management Limited in relation to both the acquisition of the player and negotiation of his personal terms», the amount was 2 x Rooney’s first year wage.

With such payments being made to player’s agent’s maybe it is up to the humble fan to speak out?

Just think where that extra 20% on the price of your season ticket next season maybe going.

As for Theo Walcott’s management company as well as the signing on money paid to Key Sports Management and there agent Colin Gordon they will also receive payment for arranging deals for image rights etc, Theo already has a boot deal with Nike gained while he was 14 but you can be sure of more deals and transfer requests to follow as his management company try to do «what is in the players best interest».

The Dream of One Man – The Love of a Club to Help Him Live His Dream

Cristiano Ronaldo, affectionately called CR7, has left Manchester United for his dream club Real Madrid, this comes after six years with Premier League Champions. Ronaldo joined Manchester United in two thousand (2003) from Sporting Lisbon, one of Portugal’s leading football club, for 12.25 million pounds and has since exhausted all superlatives. He has won the champions league, the Fifa Club World Cup, Premier League trophy, Carling Cup, FA Cup and a myriad of personal awards including the Ball D’or & FIFA World Player of the Year.

Ever since his transfer to Manchester United his talent and skill was evident against Bolton Wanderers on his debut in English Football, his pace and passion for the game always made him «one to watch» for the future.

After six years with Manchester United he has left a legend, making two hundred and ninety twenty two (292) appearances scoring one hundred and eighteen (118) goals. He arrived somewhat a legend from the moment he got the number seven (#7) jersey as the likes of Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Bryan Robson, George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton have docked that number seven (# 7) jersey.

So the club moves on with a heavy heart but joyous mood for the son of Lisbon, for we know change must come but one thing that will never change was that face of CR7 when he scored or when he was pissed at referee’s decision.

He has now joined Real Madrid, the club he dreamt of playing for as a boy. All the best Ronny.
