Four Different Baltimore Pro Football Teams Have Won Championships

Winning the championship is the primary goal of any football team, or any sports team at all really. There is only one reason to go out and play and that is to win the championship. A championship season is not only rewarding to the players that duke it out on the field, but also to the fans that root them on. Cities and regions should be very proud of their championship winning teams.

Baltimore is a great football town and professional football has been present there in one form or another for more than 60 years. Many people don’t know this, but four different professional football teams have won championships while representing the city of Baltimore.

The Baltimore Ravens – 2000

The last Baltimore team to win a league title in pro football was the team that currently represents the city in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens began as a franchise in 1996, having been active as the Cleveland Browns the previous year. They had a few tough years, but in 2000 everything came together behind a strong running game and an out of this world defense. They ended up defeating the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV.

The Baltimore Colts – 1958, 1959, and 1970

The Baltimore Colts won championships three times. In 1958, they defeated the New York Giants for the NFL title in what many would refer to as the greatest game ever played. After trailing most of the 1959 title game, the Colts would eventually score 24 unanswered points and defeat the Giants in a rematch of the previous year’s championship game by the score of 31-16. The Colts won their third league title in 1970 when they beat the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl V by the score of 27-17. Technically, the Colts have a fourth title as they were champions of the NFL in 1968, but went on to lose Super Bowl III to the New York Jets of the American Football League before the two leagues merged.

The Baltimore Stars – 1985

The Stars franchise had played the first two seasons of their time in the USFL in the city of Philadelphia. The team was moved to Baltimore for 1985 and though they weren’t as successful as they had been in the past, they were able to make it into the playoffs. The magic was still there though and they marched through the post season and would win the last championship game in USFL history by defeating the Oakland Invaders.

The Baltimore Stallions – 1995

The Canadian Football League expanded into the United States in the mid 1990’s, and one of the cities that got a team was Baltimore. In 1995, their second season, the Baltimore Stallions not only won their division, but they became the first team based in America to win the Grey Cup as champions of the Canadian Football League. The team was gone the next year as they were moved to Montreal and renamed the Allouettes.

PES 2013 – The Only Video Game For Footy Fans

PES 2013 by Konami launches on PS3, XBOX 360, Wii and PC this autumn and will give FIFA 12 a run for its money this year if the online rumblings are to be believed. The PES franchise has been around for 16 years and progressed through many iterations both in title and game play style, so what makes Pro Evolution Soccer so popular?

If you live in North America, the chances are that unless you are a die-hard ‘soccer’ fan, this event will simply pass you by, but if you live in the rest of the world, most specifically in Europe, then as every PES fan knows, the football season starts in August, but you only get to play out your own footy fantasies come October, when the latest and greatest version of PES hits the video game shop shelves.

It all started way back in video game time, actually 1996, when Goal Storm was released on the PlayStation. Since then, PES has moved through several naming conventions and the latest update will be called PES 2013. It will go head to head like it has for the past 16 years with Electronic Arts (EA) and their masterpiece – FIFA (12). There are really only these two games vying for gamers’ hard cash every year and if anything that makes the competition even more fierce.

You see the two games have battled it out year on year and this year PES stands a chance of getting back to the top of the pile. It has been languishing behind for the past 5 or 6 years, due in part to complacency, but also the resurgence and downright brilliance of FIFA.

The facts of the case are this your honour;

FIFA (which stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association) as the name might suggest, is an officially endorsed football game, this means that the game comes replete with all the real player names, team names, football kits, competition names and stadia. PES has never had these rights and has had to rely on an editing mode and the ingenuity of the gamers who buy the game to recreate all of the aforementioned details, liveries and stadia. This has fostered a powerful online community purely along editing interests, but when coupled with the obvious game play advantages of PES you begin to see why the popularity of the game is still so high.

So what are these game play advantages?

Well, the trade off in the licensing situation has always been overcome by the sheer beauty of playing PES – it is a game for footy fans. The actual game play has always more closely mirrored the real game, whereas FIFA has traditionally suffered in this area. Playing PES in the first few years was always pure fun, games were high scoring, but varied, FIFA always felt staged and the ball never seemed to behave like a real football, feeling much too floaty. By comparison, PES footballs have always had a weight to them and challenges between players have felt meaty.

An analogy between the two games is to think of FIFA as being a Premier League or Champions League setup, it looks polished and has endorsements coming out of its ears, but it isn’t really true football, it’s a pre-packaged version of the game designed to ensnare glory hunting footy fans, the ones who shout about how great their team is despite knowing nothing about their own teams history.

Pro Evo on the other hand is jumpers for goalposts, dirty knees and eating soggy cornish pasties on a cold, wet Tuesday night away to Barnsley! The analogy might be lost on many and that to some degree proves a point, football isn’t always shiny, multiple step-overs and pink Nike boots, it’s about the teams outside the Premier League who still have fans that turn up for every home and away game, despite not having seen their side win anything for years. That is real football and that is what Konami have tried to encapsulate, despite being based in Japan.

To a large degree they have succeeded, but the line has been blurred between the two games in recent years. FIFA has now moved very close to matching the whole ethos of PES, some say their game play is actually better, I still disagree with that statement, but certainly with the online patches available now to PES gamers, they can sidestep the licensing issue and create photo-realistic players, teams and kits – which means the two games are very much on a collision course to meet in the middle.

Konami have cheered up their fans in previous years by securing licence rights to the England National team, two Premier League teams and various other leagues and players around Europe and the world. This has undoubtedly helped, but give me a fake named Man Red (Manchester united) and quality game play any day over the FIFA version of football. At the end of the day I buy football computer games because I like to play games that recreate the beautiful game, FIFA now does it well, but PES does it better and I’m just hoping that the next instalment of PES 2013 will again give me that option to take the mighty Derby County to European Glory!

10 Tips to Choose Between Sports Agent Firms

Is the agent or agency that’s recruiting you registered to practice as an agent or agency in your state?

For the NFL, sports agent firms must be registered with the National Football League Player’s Association (NFLPA) to negotiate a contract for a player. The Uniform Athlete Agents Act, or the UAAA, is a state law currently recognized by 40 States (as of April 2011), in addition to Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands, that regulates the recruiting actions of agents.

The Act’s purpose is to create uniformity in the way sports agent firms go about recruiting and communicating with prospective clients. Part of the Act requires that sports agents register in each state in which they choose to recruit athletes in.

If you’re in a state where the UAAA isn’t recognized, ask them if they’re registered in that particular state (if applicable). If you’re already a professional athlete, the prospective agent(s) don’t have to register with your state.

Have you ever been disbarred, suspended or disciplined as an attorney or agent?

While bad things do happen to good people at times, it’s good to know whether or not the sports agent firm you’re considering has ever been disciplined, suspended or disbarred (in the event that they’re also an attorney). Research the attorney or agent, and feel free to bring-up what you’ve learned. There may be a good explanation of what happened, but it’s important that you’re comfortable with them and their track record.

What is your fee? Is your fee negotiable? How and when do you bill me for your services?

Do you provide any type of annual statement to your clients?

Sports agent firms normally bill on a percentage of the value of the contract they negotiate on the players behalf. Quite often this fee is capped. For example, in the NFL (National Football League) and the UFL (United Football League), these fees are capped at 3%, meaning the agents’s commissions cannot exceed 3% of the total value of the contract negotiated.

Even so, you can ask to pay the agent on an hourly rate, if it’s agreed upon. It’s been said that Ray Allen, now of the Boston Celtics (NBA), saved himself over $2.8m by paying Johnny Cochran $500 an hour instead of paying a 4% commission back in 1999 when he was negotiating his own contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.

As far as athletic training, who do you work with? Who have they prepared for the Combine in the past? Who pays for my training?

Nowadays, sports agent firms commonly foot the bill for combine and pro day preparation training for sure-fire draft picks. Some athletes choose to stay at school and train for these events, while others prefer to go to a remote location to train.

It’s important to make sure that you and your prospective representatives have a clear understanding regarding where you’re training, who’s training you, and how much it will cost, as well as if any of the related fees are your own financial responsibility.

Your career’s at stake, so it’s vital that you research the experience and track record of the entity where you’ll be training.

What type of financial services do you provide? Do you receive any referral fees from the financial advisor you recommend? Can I use my own financial planner or accountant?

Sports agent firms sometimes receive kickbacks or commissions for referring clients to specific financial advisors. This practice obviously should raise concern regarding whether or not the agency is referring that financial advisor because of their performance and quality of services.

Ask if they recommend a financial advisor. If they do, investigate the backgrounds of them. If you discover any red flags, bring up your concerns with the agency or agent to see what they say. Sports agent firms that recommend financial advisors with questionable backgrounds shouldn’t necessarily be disqualified from consideration, as they are (or should be) two separate entities. It’s also possible that they either didn’t know about the infractions themselves, or that there’s a good explanation behind what you found, unless it’s criminal activity.

When interviewing prospective financial advisors, find out their take on you employing risk managers to assess the level of risk involved with their recommended investments. If your best interest is their true concern, they shouldn’t have an issue with you having a third party look over their recommendations. Financial advisers that represent NFL players must register with the NFLPA just like agents.

NOTE: Never choose a financial advisor or sports agent firms just because they recruit you heavily! Find the one that’s best for YOU.

How many clients do you currently have? How do you plan to address my needs while dealing with your other clients?

The number of current clientele that sports agent firms can have varies greatly. You need to make sure you’re comfortable with the amount of clientele they currently have and will have in the near future. Such information can be helpful in determining the amount of attention and time that they’re able to put into your career.

Conversely, larger sports agent firms have the infrastructure in place to still be able to provide quality time and attention to individual clients, so be sure to inquire about the structure of their firm in this regard.

If for some reason, I am not drafted, how can you help me increase my chances of making a team?

Unfortunately, each year prospects fail to get drafted that expected to be. There are also players that were expected to be Undrafted Free Agents that end up not getting selected. Experienced sports agent firms will work with you to create a plan of action to assess worst case scenarios.

Ask what kind of plan they would put in place to assess a situation where you weren’t selected, or where you ended up getting Undrafted Free Agent offers if you were expecting to be drafted.

Ask if situations like this happened in the past, and how they handled it.

What are your strategies regarding endorsement deals for a player like me?

Endorsement deals are much harder to come by today in professional football than years past. The best ones are reserved for star quarterbacks, especially those that play in big market cities. Marketing opportunities for average players in small markets are very rare.

The amount of weight you put on a sports agent firms experience with client endorsements is up to you, however it’s wise to consider how scarce they are when judging sports agent firms.

How can you help me make additional money from other opportunities?

Even though endorsements are scarce, opportunities are still there. The main factor to finding these opportunities is superior performance on the field, but there are other factors, such as image and accessibility, that will boost your chances.

The best sports agent firms have resources, either internal or external, that assist clients with optimizing their public appeal through community service, free public speaking opportunities, social media strategies, interviews, and other opportunities to make you accessible, personable, and memorable in the eyes of the public.

How can you help me prepare for life after sports, in addition to having good financial management? What other clients have you helped with their post-career?

Post-career assistance and guidance is a fairly standard offering with today’s sports agent firms. The key is whether or not you are prepared to listen and follow the guidance provided. It’s one thing to say you’ll listen, and that you will be smart with your money, however it’s a whole other reality when you begin to get those huge checks. Ask the 75% of former NFL players that are broke within 3-5 years after leaving the NFL.

Chicharito Hernandez – Top 10 Reasons Why He Is Better Than Rooney

Wayne Rooney has not done much to be a footballing icon. His actual skill with the ball has never been of the highest level. It’s time for the charade to stop. Luckily for Manchester United fans, Chicharito Hernandez is the hope that we’ve all been waiting for. At 22, he’s faster, hungrier, and is not prone to marriage scandals. And those reasons alone, despite his lack of experience, and having less championships to his name, Javier Hernandez is already better than Wayne Rooney, and more important to United.

10. Chicharito is a Bachelor

Hernandez is 22 good-looking (kind of resembles Kuno Becker’s character from Goal, Santiago Munez). He’s not dumb enough to get married just as he’s becoming one of the most popular footballers in the world. In fact he is still in college taking online courses. It shows more character to intelligently remain with his long time girlfriend, Lety Sahagun. They’ve has a 2 year relationship which is pretty traditional. Far from the cheat repeatedly with prostitutes, and lie about it, habits of other superstar players..

Even Cristiano Ronaldo has enough sense to stay a bachelor and paying off the girls he impregnates. Rooney’s personal problems have unfortunately have a lot to do with his current decrease of level of play. And it’s not the first time.

9. Chicharito Is More Humble

Chicharito Hernandez has been know through out the years for being one of the most humble players in Soccer. He still lives with his parents (they move to England with him, including his grandparents) he has online college classes and is a very well rounded individual. This stability at home with his family has undoubtedly has helped his career.

He has also stayed aways from drug and alcohol scandals (even though he was one of the players fined for having a party where there were allegedly prostitutes involved with the Mexican national team). He seems like the type of player who is centered and his personality and humble nature will keep him from trouble and keep his head in the game. Something Rooney has had a lot of problems with as of late

8. Marketability

Javier Hernandez is not only young and handsome, but he has a great personality and is very likable. Javier Hernandez at this point has more potential in marketing as Wayne Rooney does. Hernandez represents a sector of the world with little or no connection to English soccer, which presenting a unique marketing opportunity to United’s globalizing brand.

After Chicharito’s signing with Manchester United, the official website received over 50,000 new members from Latin america and the united states. Chicharito Hernandez is one of those players that we love to see succeed and it represents a great opportunity for monetizing that success for Manchester united.

Rooney was marketable at one point, but his recent scandals and poor performances and making it harder and harder each day for him to have the marketability that Chicharito is capable of achieving at this point.

7. Love For The Game

Now, there is no real way of anyone quantifying how much someone loves something, but you can look at peoples body langues and attitudes towards something. And Chicharito’s love for the game and the joy he gets from playing is obvious when you see him play. Chicharito plays with the same joy and happiness we all did as kids and it come through.

Rooney seems colder and doesn’t seem to enjoy the beautiful game as much as Chicharito.

6. The World Cup Chicharito

Not having played a full match at the world cup Chicharito still managed to have a breakout performance scoring 2 goals. 1 against France and the second against Argentina. Rooney played about 4 times as much as Chicharito and had a less than average performance.

The world cup also showed us that Chicharito is capable of playing against the big teams in the world, in the biggest stages in the world and not break with the pressure, it actually seems to making him better. Chicharito in the month prior to the World Cup and since the World Cup he has scored against these powerhouses Netherlands, France, Argentina, and Spain… not to include smaller sides such as Bolivia, Gambia among others.

All the world cup did for Chicharito was to display his ability to score on tough games, and all it did for Rooney was to show us that he is not player he once was… or thought he was.

5. Hunger to Succeed

Chicharito is one of the Hungriest players in soccer today. At this point he has nothing more than potential and great skill. But his hunger to succeed is what has brought him this far in such short amount of time. Unfortunately for Wayne Rooney he no longer has potential, and what is infinitely worse for a competitive athlete, it seems that Rooney has lost his hunger to succeed.

4. Dinero! (Money)

Everyone knows money is the fuel that drives most clubs’ decisions, making this the number one reason Hernandez, not Rooney, is United’s future first striker.

Wayne Rooney is undoubtedly very marketable, but his own image has long since surpassed his footballing ability. In other words, it’s a seller’s market. After winning little with an incomplete and aging squad, United should be able to garner around £50m for Rooney next offseason. Which is a lot more than he’s worth. United could buy several younger, better players with that money as Chicharito assumes the forward-running striker role for many years.

Hernandez is quickly becoming a hero for Mexico, naturally displacing the aged Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Rafael Marquez. Furthermore, his best years are ahead of him instead of behind him. Mexico is crazy about soccer, yet remains untapped by European clubs. It’s a completely new marketplace of opportunity for United, and they know it.

Most casual United fans, even those that occasionally buy jerseys, will be interested in anyone who plays striker for United, as long as he’s good enough. Hernandez is better than Rooney, in addition to having stronger character, being more consistent, better-mannered, and a far less hesitant star

Chicharito Hernandez is Manchester United’s emerging star who, despite being worth less on the transfer market, is already better than Wayne Rooney, certainly on current form. Yet, Chicharito still can grow and get a lot better, instead of the Rooney who, after now looks like a 40-year-old drunken sailor, much like he appeared in the Nike write the future commercial.

3. Style

Wayne Rooney is a midfielder playing forward. His best attribute is being a train-like tackler rather than a finesse finisher. Rooney has a great long ball as well as a great driven passes through the middle. Unfortunately he plays in a position that requires him being the receiver, not the passer. He loves to drop deep and track back, two tendencies which are fine in, but can be counter-productive to the larger picture when he’s playing as the lead forward.

As a more direct striker, Hernandez fits United’s scheme better, complementing striker partner Dimitar Berbatov’s creative style. The Bulgarian takes more joy in the final pass than scoring the goal itself. Chicharito supplements this perfectly, having the speed and inclination to be the first man darting into the box once his side opens up opposing defenses.

Rooney and Berbatov, though, often get their lines crossed, as both may abandon forward and drop deep; one out of frustration and impatience, the other from penchant and necessity. Hernandez is a more suitable to Berbatov’s and quite simply plays more like a striker than a roaming Rooney.

2. Quality

Rooney has not met his goal-scoring expectations. His goal tally averages to 13 each season on one of the world’s most dominant football clubs. Many resulted more from finishing a team-worked attack than creating through personal brilliance.

His current striker partner Berbatov is wiry, but shrugs off defenders easily because his body control and balance are both impeccable. Wayne usually fires himself like a freight train between or through defenders, using blunt-force trauma over agility, and can only rarely create by himself running at anyone.

Running is Hernandez’s specialty. The Mexican was the fastest player in the World Cup according to FIFA. Their guns clocked him running at almost 20 MPH. That’s one asset Rooney no longer shares and perhaps the single most important attribute of a through striker. Hernandez also shows a decent turn with his back to goal and an ability to finish with both feet. He is taller than Rooney and jumps higher.

With speed, athleticism, ambidexterity, and prowess, he has raw natural ability upon which more skill will continue flourishing, besides being the more effective of the two players on current form.

1. Potential

Rooney having played eight full seasons in the EPL is a very old 25. The period when most of his improvement would have occurred is over. Wayne hasn’t added or changed his game for the better in several years. In fact, he’s picked up some bad habits, losing the abandon and naivete that actually helped his earlier style.

Hernandez, a much fresher 22, has only begun to mature. The Mexican international has netted against Spain, France, and Italy, among others, this year. He plays happy, as opposed to Rooney, and shows none of the stress and disturbance than mars Rooney’s displays. Hernandez might already be better than the Englishman. At the very least, though, he has plenty of growth ahead of him during which to prove it.

Message From the Universe: When HELPING Others, You HELP Yourself!

«There is no greater weapon than kindness.

A smile, a compliment, encouragement and compassion belong in the arsenal of every Time-Space Adventurer.

Today, may you crush, kill and destroy the fears you encounter, in others and in yourself.

Yes, please, thank you –

The Universe»

Everyone you will encounter in your life are dealing with their daily struggles. You need to be kind to everyone, even those who have wronged you. Easier said than done right? I am with you on that one. Guilt is something that can destroy someone who have done wrong to others, and karma will take care of the rest. IF someone feels no remorse or care about anyone else besides themselves, life will come back at them and will take care of the things you personally can’t. For everything else in life, there is your smile and kindness that will count. When you help others, you are helping yourself. There is always a better way to do the things you weren’t aware of when you figure out solutions that can help someone in trouble. There is only good coming out of helping others when needed. Be that person who is willing to take that step forward to make a positive change in this world.

Let’s take the example of the partially blind autistic kid who got beaten up by a bully and another kid intervene by punching and knocking down the bully. He intervened while others by-standards didn’t do squat. The high school district expelled both of them from school, the bully and the one who defended the autistic kid but the latter was able to get 35 000 signatures to get him back in school for the right reasons. All schools should have a ZERO tolerance for bullying but should apply good Samaritan law when it comes to protecting the ones who can’t defend themselves. Do not be the one being a by-standard and let someone be a victim of crime. You need to make sure that you protect yourself, obviously, but if many get together and attack the assailant, he will run instead of confronting 10 by-standard ready to bring justice to the victim. If only one intervene, the criminal might stand their ground. Take action and always be willing to help others, because at the end, the person you are really helping is yourself.

The Geography of Derby

Derby City is in the south east corner of the county of Derbyshire, in Trent valley. Along with Nottingham and Leicester it makes up the sub-region of the East Midlands, Derby is the smallest of these three cities. The world map reference for the city is latitude 52o55′ north and longitude 1o28′ west. The River Derwent is the main river running through it and is one of the few geographical features for this city, which is, by and large, flat and featureless. The average elevation in the city centre is around 50 metres. To the extreme east of the city, at Spondon and the extreme west of the city, at Mickleover, the elevation does rise to just over 100 metres.

The first known settlement in Derby was made by the Romans, in the district now known as Darley Dale, who built a fort overlooking the River Derwent. This quickly expanded to include a civil settlement from which the town and then city developed. Derby was awarded city status during the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth II 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne in 1977. Up until 1997 Derby was the county town for Derbyshire. However, on becoming a unitary authority on April 1st 1997 the administrative centre for the county transferred to Matlock. Derby City occupies an area of about 7800 hectares and has a population density below 30 people per hectare, making it one of the country’s least crowded cities. Derby city is split into 17 electoral wards that return 56 local councillors. The city is represented in the House of Commons, at Parliament, by three constituency MPs.

Climatically, Derby has the typical temperate climate of England. Its average December temperature is just below 40C and it has an average high of 18oC in July. The main wind direction for Derby is south westerly, meaning that most of its weather systems arrive from the Atlantic. Rainfall in Derby is typical for the English midlands, averaging around 750 millimetres of rainfall a year, with an expectancy of there being some rain falling on 150 days in the year.

The surface Geology of Derby is deposits of mudstone and sandstone that are between 1 and 10 metres thick, underlying that are mainly Triassic mudstone bedrocks. To the east and north of the city these overly the Carboniferous coal measures that formed the South Yorkshire coalfields. Whilst to the north is the Derbyshire Dome of Upper Carboniferous Limestone, which marks the southern edge, or beginning, of the Pennine Way. This is also part of the Peak District which was the first National Park to be created in Britain in 1951. Walks along the River Dove, in Dovedale, are particularly popular with tourists. However, the Peak District has contributed to the economy of Derby in more ways than just tourism. It was a major area for sheep farming and the production of wool as well as being rich in minerals. The Peak District has some of the best and most diverse Geology in England. Here you can find: Limestone’s, Shale’s, Gritstones and Sandstones including the famous Millstone Grit. Now more or less completely worked out it was a major area for Lead ore mining and a form of Fluorspar called ‘Blue John’ that was much sought after for making jewellery. The quarrying of Limestone has been taking place in the Peak District since Roman times for building stones and the production of cement and mortar. This process continues today with over 7 million tonnes of Limestone being extracted annually, from the twelve active quarries inside the park.

Engineering is very important to the economy of the city. Apart from the Rolls Royce works the city has many railway engineering companies and the Toyota production plant nearby. Almost 35% of the population are employed in manufacturing of one kind or another, making it one of the cities in the UK where manufacturing employment is greater than public administration and health services. Derby is the beginning of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site, which is acknowledged as being one of the places in which the British industrial revolution began in the 18th century. The combination of local wool supplies and water mills to power the new weaving looms made Derby one of the model systems for, what were then, modern factories.

The average house price in Derby city is £145, 000, with prices rising (on average) from £110,000 for a terraced house to £235,000 for a detached property. The average price for a flat in Derby is £120,000. Generally, during the period 2006-2007, house prices in Derby City rose by 10%. Compared to most of the rest of Derbyshire, house prices in the city are lower than all areas other than Spondon, to the east and Bolsover to the north east of the county. The areas of Mickleover, to the west of the city and Darley Dale to the north, are the most sought after residential areas

Insider’s Guide to Getting a Job in Manchester

Manchester is one of the up-and-coming cities of the UK. The Greater Manchester area has been growing steadily since 2007 and is one of the areas of the UK that has recovered most quickly from the credit crunch recession. It is the second largest functional financial region outside of London and shows a growth rate of almost twice that of the majority of UK urban areas. The expansion has been fuelled by large scale investment in services industries, particularly the financial sector. Some of the major businesses with offices and large employee bases in the Manchester region are Vodafone, the BBC, Thomas Cook, the Guardian, Kellogs, ITV and the heinous internet ogre Google.

Between them, they provide a wealth of job opportunities, however, the appeal of Manchester to job seekers is that there are also plenty of other industries. The main industry is the financial sector; banking and insurance but other opportunities are available in retail and telesales in particular. Manchester is a centre of excellence for the service sector including logistics. The latter is natural since Manchester is at the hub of the UK’s transport network with motorways and rail links radiating out in all 4 cardinal directions. There are some highly specialised niche industries that have centred on the area for example, biotechnology and environmental technology; perhaps due to the presence of the Manchester Institute of Technology (MiT) which produces many scientific and technically qualified experts.

On a human scale rather than economical scale, the city and its environs are cosmopolitan and there is a thriving cultural scene. The latter has attracted creatives to the city – check any search engine and you will find pages of advertising agencies and other creative companies based here. These include digital and print advertising, packaging design, marketing, media… the list goes on and on! So not is it a great area for technical job searches, it is also great for those on the other side of the coin looking for creative jobs. Whilst looking through available jobs, I found an unusually high (well it seemed high to me) number of jobs for linguists too – the travel industry required Polish speakers; a car rental company needed someone who spoke excellent Norwegian and there were openings fr French speakers in retail!

Salaries in Greater Manchester are very varied. For telesales and basic retail jobs, they are as low as 12,000, but you don’t have to look far for well paid managerial and technical jobs that offer 40 – 50K plus. So in other words, there is pretty much something for everyone, depending on their skills and experience.

How to find a job in Manchester

Online is a good place to start. It will save you a lot of time and several bus fares! There are thousands of advertised jobs on the usual websites like gumtree, Monster and fish4. But a really good site for job seekers is Reeds, a national recruitment agency as you can see how many others have applied for the jobs in which you are interested. For creative jobs, check out ‘The Drum’ and remember to check out the Guardian jobs pages too.

But before you even start, you should re-vamp your CV. This is best left to professionals who, after exploring the type of employment you are looking for, can provide you with an edge over the others. They will advise you on the best type of CV (yes, there are several effective ways to present a CV) and use your skills and experience to paint you in a very positive light. You, after all, are an amateur in the field, unless of course you are in HR!
