Green Living – Eco Home Design and Environmental Friendly Habits

Why green living?

I have 8 grandchildren and I would like them to live in the future in a world as good or better than the world we know today. But that will only be possible if we take more care of our use of natural resources and the environment. I think I need to take responsibility for what I can, linked to my daily life, and I would recommend you to do the same if you care for your grandchildren.

Is it difficult to live more green?

Many have the feeling that to live more green is very bothersome, expensive and difficult. But take these advices and see if they fit your temper and possibilities. As with a lot of things in life it helps to think and plan a little ahead of what you want to do. For me the following approach toward a more green daily life has been rewarding.

Generate ideas of more green living

Use five minutes to list a lot of things you expect would reduce your and your family’s impact on the environment. Just dot the ideas down as they come into your mind. If feasible do it as a family event around the table and engage everyone in this green brainstorm. Think of three types of more green living as follows and put your green ideas into the three categories:

1. Green ideas that will save you money

2. Green ideas that will be neutral on your economy

3. Green ideas that will cost you money

1. Green ideas that will save you money

The ideas for greener living that will save you money should be implemented immediately. It is stupid to waste money and at the same time pollute more or use more resources than needed. Many companies here in Denmark have made use of this to reduce their environmental impact and to improve their competitiveness and profit from that green initiative at the same time. Many private households would benefit from it too.

Examples of green ideas that will save you money more or less from the moment you implement them are:

– Avoid running toilets and dripping taps (remember the garden, too).

– Have your lamps and electricity running more than needed, e.g. in rooms without any persons, and the standby lamps of electrical equipment.

– Drive your care more softly and you reduce the consumption of gasoline and keep your tires longer.

2. Green ideas that will be neutral on your economy

If you think of your grandchildren as I recommend the green ideas that will be neutral to your economy should also be taken into consideration. It is ideas for greener living that just need a little attention from you in your daily life.

Such more green habits could be

– When you are shopping avoid the extra bags and wrapping from the shop if you don’t need it.

– Make your own compost in your garden and keep as much of the nutrition’s in your garden instead of ‘exporting’ garden waste and have to buy fertilizers etc.

– Reduce your consumption of red meat and prepare food with more fish, chicken and turkey and supplement more with veggies. – That will also be healthier.

3. Green ideas that will cost you money

Ideas for greener living that cost you money might also be worthwhile considering, so please read on. Here I will emphasise the environmental effect when you buy new kinds of equipment, like a new freezer, a new car, a new computer, a new washing machine etc. The whole trend of eco home design will often belong to this category.

Take your time to investigate the different qualities related to the environmental impact of the different brands and models of machines and equipment. Search for independent rating of the environmental impacts. In Europe we have a marking with A to E for the energy consumption and the most environmental friendly washing machines etc. will have an A label. Most consumers at least in Denmark will be very much aware of that label and go for it if it isn’t too expensive.

The beauty of such an expense is that in most cases it will pay off in the long run to pay the extra for an environmental friendly model because you will save electricity or other tings in the long run. In many cases the premium environmental friendly machines will also be of the best quality and that will help you too. So you see it isn’t that difficult to get started with some new greener habits and you can still look your grandchildren in the eyes because you are caring for their future.

How to Get Rid of Fleas Safely and Naturally – Beware of So Called "Herbal Treatments"!

Owning an elderly dog with renal and liver problems and recently having been invaded by cat fleas from an onslaught of stray cats in the neighbourhood I went on a quest to find the safest and most natural flea treatments I could possibly find. After extensive research I was able to compile a veritable arsenal of flea treatments that I thought I would share with other dog owners, especially since the majority of us know how harmful chemicals and insecticides are. I, like many of you, absolutely refuse to expose my dogs to carcinogenic substances.

My dog has flea allergies so it was crucial for me to find effective yet safe solutions to this flea problem. One flea bite drives her crazy! Let me begin by telling you this, if you want to go natural in your quest to rid your house and pets of fleas you have to understand that you will have to use several flea prevention methods, and you’ll need to arm yourself with a bit of patience.

My interest was piqued in herbal collars and I decided to research them some more. To my dismay I found out that the majority of herbal collars include pennyroyal and rue. These herbs can cause liver and kidney damage (as well as many other health issues) when ingested, and while the probability that my old dog would actually ingest her collar was slim, I wasn’t prepared to risk it.

The next natural flea prevention solution I read about was Borax or Boric powder. People have been touting the miraculous effect these products have in combating fleas, and while I don’t doubt this it soon became clear to me that these were not safe products to use on my beloved pet. Borax is an abrasive substance so imagine what can happen if your pet inhales it, plus borates have a tendency to become concentrated in the kidney and can cause kidney damage.

Well, to cut a long story short, aside from my ever trusty flea comb, here’s what I am using:

1. Flea Traps: The kind that work by attracting fleas to a sticky surface. They use small bulbs to attract fleas to a sticky surface. I caught several small insects and fleas. What I do is leave them on overnight when it’s dark for maximum effect. A good way to increase their effectiveness is to move them around occasionally. I even put them in my dog’s beds (she has two, one in the lounge and one in our bedroom, so at night I put the trap in her lounge bed and during the day I darken the bedroom and put a trap in her night bed).

2. Dawn or Fairy Dishwashing Liquid: Regular Dawn of Fairy dishwashing liquid is great for bathing your flea infested dog, it’s less harmful than specialised flea shampoos as it doesn’t contain any chemicals or insecticides and you’ll get a warped sense of pleasure as you see the nasty creatures drown in the bathwater.

3. Herbal Collars: There are some harmless herbal flea collars out there; the one I’m using contains lavender buds and cedarwood shavings. While I’m not a big fan of cedarwood shavings it’s only a minute amount, just enough to keep those nasty pests away from my dog. The same company also makes a dry shampoo/flea powder using all natural (and safe) ingredients and the owner of the company is genuinely concerned about the safety of their products (I grilled her with all my concerns). Let’s just say it’s definitely «good riddance» to fleas!

4. Diatomaceous Earth: Make sure you buy HUMAN FOOD GRADE D/Earth, anything else is potentially toxic. Sprinkle the D/earth under couches, beds, anywhere your dog doesn’t constantly hang around in. Make sure the dog is kept away while you’re doing this as inhaling the fine dust can cause problems and wear a dust mask if possible. D/earth can be used indoors and out but I would advise against using it outdoors as you would be killing many «good» insects as well. Ants, if they aren’t a problem for you, eat flea larvae so I consider them a valuable a part of my safe flea arsenal!

Human food grade d/earth or fossil flour as it’s also called is supposedly good for combating internal parasites as well, I intend on trying this as I’m afraid of using commercial worming medication on my dog at this point. I’ve tried to find out if it has any harmful side effects but haven’t been able to find any; in fact people are using fossil flour on a daily basis and claim it has many benefits. If you know of any harmful side effects of using it orally on a pet please let me know!

5. Bio-tags: There are a couple of companies out there that claim their tags provide your pet with a magnetic shield to keep fleas and ticks away. There are good and bad reviews on the subject but I haven’t been able to find any literature on any harmful side effects so I’m getting one for my dog, Worse case scenario I’m short a few bucks, I love my dog and would do anything in my power to make her comfortable and healthy so I don’t mind. I figure it won’t harm her and if it does work, that’s great!

6. Motion Detector Sprinklers: These are a great and humane way to keep flea-ridden animals out of your yard.

That’s it; I think I’ve covered it all! This is the culmination of my extensive reading and research and I hope it helps you get rid of fleas too. Please let me know if you have some safer flea cures!

Ricky Williams Personal Life Includes Yoga, Vegetarian, Social Anxiety Disorder and Hindu Faith

Ricky Williams is one of the most interesting players in the National Football League (NFL) because of the fact that he seems to be unique in many ways that are unlike traditional norms and stereotypes about professional football players. Chief amongst the intriguing aspects of the life of Ricky Williams that separates him from most of his teammates are:

1. His interest in yoga – Ricky is a certified yoga instructor

2. His endorsement of a prescription drug to deal with his social anxiety disorder

3. His vegetarian diet

4. His Hindu faith

By normal standards within the general population of Americans anyone of the four items listed above would be enough to place an individual in a small minority of all citizens in the United States. The fact that all four of the unique and in some cases controversial issues listed above apply to one man who happens to be a standout NFL football player who was considered one of the best college football players of all time is particularly odd.

When most people think of professional football players they do not picture serene yoga classes. Ricky Williams is the exception to this rule because he is such a personal advocate of the practice of yoga that he has actually gone as far as to become certified to instruct classes. He has given free yoga classes in Toronto, Canada.

Williams suffers from a form of social anxiety disorder that his therapists have helped him manage. Having a social anxiety disorder is hard for the average person and can be increasing difficult to deal with as a celebrity who is constantly bombarded by strangers and attention. For a brief period Ricky worked with a large pharmaceutical company as a spokesperson of sorts to promote education about the product the company was producing to assist in managing social anxiety issues.

Ricky does not eat the sort of diet that is normally associated with a powerful 230 pound NFL football player. As a professional football player Williams can afford to eat at the finest steak houses but instead chooses to practice a vegetarian diet in which he abstains from eating meat. In addition to his personal diet as a crusade to help animals Ricky has been a face for the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) organization.

According to a 2001 study.4% of Americans are Hindu. Ricky Williams, an African American, counts himself as one of the 1.1 million US citizens that practice Hinduism. Of the approximately one million practicing Hindi citizens live in the United State the vast majority are of Indian heritage. Williams, a current Florida resident, does not even live in one of the five US states where Hinduism is most prolific. Those states include: Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, New York, and California.

English Football League Predictions

The big kick-off is upon us again and those experts in the know from the world of TV and press have been busy telling us how it all ends, even before it has begun! As usual fixed odds in focus have joined in via their e-zine service Tipped at the Post.

In the Premiership, although Liverpool have spent big, they are not quite there yet and consequently are likely to fall short of Man Utd and Chelsea again. The Blues will be keen to regain their crown, but United still appear to have the edge. Arsenal are perhaps, one season away from being genuine challengers again; however, in Van Persie they do have a player capable giving the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Gerrard and Drogba a run for their money, with regards to player of the season. Spurs are getting closer to the big 4, but they are still not close enough and are more likely to be battling for the UEFA spots with Portsmouth, Villa, West Ham and Newcastle.

The likes of Reading, Everton, Sunderland and maybe surprisingly Derby can all make mid-table finishes. Most people will have the Rams as certainties to make an instant return to the Championship, but in Billy Davies they have a talented manager capable of keeping their heads above water. At the bottom Blackburn and Man City can stay out of trouble – just; with the rest in a real battle. Wigan have signed a lot of players, but too many of them have a lot to prove and Middlesbrough – with some un-inspiring signings – could join them in the bottom two. Of the remaining 3 teams, Bolton might struggle to cope post Allardyce and slip out at the death, leaving Birmingham and Fulham breathing huge sighs of relief.

Charlton, with a good manager and plenty of cash, are more than capable of jumping straight back up from the Championship and taking Wolves along with them. Last season will have been a good experience for the black country outfit. Sheff U have an impressive forward line, but defence is a worry and the play-off’s look a more likely option together with Watford, Cardiff and one from Norwich, Coventry and Southampton. West Brom may well suffer a Wembley hang over and just miss out. Mid-table is probably the best Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich and Palace; with Leicester, Hull and QPR improving on last term, but not significantly. Colchester did remarkably well in their first year up, but are likely to find it a great deal tougher second time around and Preston are likely to suffer from the loss of David Nugent. Bristol City and Blackpool are more than capable of consolidating, but the others look vulnerable. Barnsley can just about survive, likewise Plymouth; leaving Stoke Burnley and Scunthorpe fighting the drop.

In League One, Forest are everybody’s tip for promotion, but they look destined to miss out again. They have brought in Neil Lennon, but it’s a very tough division and you have to wonder about his legs. Tipped at the Post’s two for automatic promotion are Doncaster and Millwall. The Yorkshire club are very ambitious and James Hayter is a cracking signing at that level. The Lions young side finished well and Willie Donachie will have them spot on. Huddersfield, Oldham and Luton are taken to fill the play-off places with Forest; just ahead of Carlisle, Swansea, Yeovil and Southend. Bristol Rovers can have a brighter season than many are suggesting, as can Hartlepool and Walsall, all 3 coming up together. Brighton, Tranmere, Crewe and Port Vale seem set for pretty uninspiring seasons; and Gillingham and Leyton Orient look certain to be bottom half material. Leeds need some luck with their appeal against the 15 point penalty, otherwise they could slip straight through. Swindon can stay up at their expense, but Bournemouth, Northampton and Cheltenham look to have it all on to avoid the drop.

In League Two Paul Ince can get one over Fergie – Darren that is! MKD can just pip Peterborough at the top, with Shrewsbury joining them. Notts County, Darlington and Rotherham are taken to make the play-off’s along with surprise packages Bury. Chesterfield, Bradford and Rochdale should all go close; with Hereford, Wycombe and Mansfield not too far behind. Lincoln have probably missed their chances over the past 5 years and Terry Butcher will not find life easy at Brentford. The two newcomers can hold their own, but the rest might struggle with Chester and Accrington Stanley making way for the return of Torquay and Oxford, who are taken to make their League comebacks.

Copenhagen in Denmark – Tourist For Culture and History of Denmark

Many cruise ships visit the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, and stay a few days in this charming small capital. This isn’t a bad encounter with a capital of a country that has been there as a kingdom for more than 1000 years. Lying very far to the east of the country Copenhagen might seem to have a strange geographical position in the country.

Maps of Denmark will show how the east coast of Zealland (Sjælland) with Copenhagen and its harbour at the border of Oeresund, (Øresund) is lying at the entrance of the Baltic Sea, a water of huge importance at present days, and of even more importance through former history of Northern Europe.

The real background for the geographical position of Copenhagen that far east is that the Danish kingdom included for 800 years a large part of what is now southern Sweden, the counties Skåne, Halland and Blekinge, (up to year 1645). During hundreds of years this location of the capital was the ideal position exactly in the middle of the Danish Kingdom concerning east-west.

When you land with an airplane in Copenhagen you will land at the Kastrup Airport convenient situated just 12 minutes by the train to the central station of Copenhagen and in fact to the heart of Copenhagen. From the central station you will have easy access some of the main tourist attractions like Tivoli, the central square, museums and art galleries.

You should ask for a window seat for your trip to Copenhagen as you will often cross the water between Sweden and Denmark at the in-flight and you can enjoy seeing islands, lots of windmills and the big bridge between Denmark and Sweden. You will land at the very flat island of Amager and the train or taxi or Airport bus will quickly take you to the city centre.

What to see in Copenhagen

Hope you have a number of days – you will not regret it. This makes it possible for you to explore the central part of Copenhagen by walking. This will probably give you the most enjoyment and you will have the best chance to absorb the atmosphere of the Danish capital and the Danes’ way of behaving. Firstly you will remark the lots and lots of bicycles of the streets of Copenhagen. Danes like to bike as a convenient way of transport most of the year. Going by bike give no pollution and bikes are a nice and democratic way of moving around as all people will be able to afford a bicycle.

You will remark that Copenhagen is still free of skyscrapers, and the old classic buildings with green roofs and many spires are covered by corrugated cobber and give Copenhagen a special charm. The public transportation system is very good with yellow busses, the subway, called the S-train, and a Metro-line, and Copenhagen is very suitable for pedestrians.

In many places in Copenhagen you will find water, as channels, or lakes, or to the coast (harbour) towards the Sund. The water creates many nice sights and places you can rest and enjoy the local people.

Copenhagen also has a number of safe and attractive green parks and the admission to the Botanical garden is free, just near one of the main stations, Nørreport Station.

This is also just opposite to the charming castle Rosenborg, build by the Danish King Christian IV in the beginning of 1600 and surrounded by a nice park. One of the most visited tourist attractions of Copenhagen. And again when you are here, you are very near the National Gallery that hosts paintings and other kinds of art from much of the world in a nice building.

Other obvious places to visit in Copenhagen are Glyptoteket, next to Tivioli. Glyptoteket, full name Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek has outstanding collections of antic art and have a attractive small café, too.

On your route though the main walking street, Strøget, you will at at Kongens Nytorv and from there you can easily visit Nyhavn (‘New Harbour’) that was a sailors’ amusement area, but now is a very attractive place for tourists and Danes enjoying a beer and the good atmosphere.

From Nyhavn you can walk to the living place of the royal family at Amalienborg, a rather small but charming castle build around a large open square. On Sundays the Royal Garde will march and play back and forth to Amalienborg from their residence near the mentioned castle Rosenborg.

Copenhagen has many other attractions, one of the most visited in recent years has been the are Christiania, called a social experiment with many alternative ways of living and organising local inhabitants. You might have to hurry up to Christiania, as the part of Copenhagen is now becoming more mainstream like other parts of Copenhagen.

After some days in Copenhagen you might like to visit other parts of Denmark. This is easily done by train or buss. For example you can take the train to the small city Roskilde that has the graves of the kings an queens in its cathedral, and a very impressive museum with wiking ships at the coast of Roskilde fjord.

You can also take the train to the north of Copenhagen to the small city Ellsinore and visit the castle Kronborg, the famous castle of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. On the way back you can make a stop at Humlebæk and walk the Lousiana, a museum of modern art, and one of the very best and most attractive in Northern Europe.

And finally from Copenhagen you will have easy access to most of the remaining parts of Denmark, e.g. visiting the house of the fairy teller Hans Christian Andersen in Odense or Legoland in Billund. With train you can easily cross the water to visit Sweden with the city Malmoe in half an hour from Copenhagen Central Station.

Arsenal’s Realistic Chances This Season (2010/2011)

I am happy about the current form of my gunners. But I hope they just take a bit of precaution at the moment. We have not really lost since the beginning of the new year and there are indications that we have just an opportunity to get our hands on the first major trophy since the last five years. But Arsene Wenger’s hope of running for the four possible titles is not just so real.

Considering that the boys are just coming of age and there are likely to be injuries and fatigue it is very good that he show concerns about this. Playing the boys three times a week would wear them off. Just recently Samir Nasri who happens to be the most promising this season is suffering from hamstring injuries. Even if he believes that this is the best gunners in so many years, caution has to be taken.

Arsenal remain in the Champions League where there is little hope of any success since they will be playing the best team in Europe, I will not try to be so optimistic about our chances like we had it during the 2007/08 season where we beat the best then, that is, AC Milan. We knew the consequence of winning that game. We lost our lead in the premiership and we were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United before that remarkable win.

We went ahead and lost in the quarter-final to Liverpool who know how to gamble with matches sacrificing the premiership trophy for the Champions league. Our realistic chances this season are the Carling Cup and the Premiership. As we trail behind Man. Utd by five (5) points, it will do us good if we just play Barcelona with the mind that we have lost (though we can give them a good fight), and hope that in the home and away games between Man. Utd and Chelsea they (Man.Utd) can drop six points and hopefully we win our return leg against them.

I still know that Alex Ferguson will not like to repeat the same mistake as last season. We better play with serious caution as there are likely to be more injuries and little recovery time. We still have 14 games as at the time of writing this report and our attack force is about the best in the premiership and we can believe that our boys will always be used to winning and the winning spirit will continue to the end of the season. I believe Arsene as a great and experience coach will have some of his advisers telling him the same or similar news!

Gunners 4 Life.
