Unstoppable – Stockton and Malone Seek the 2003 NBA Championship

Karl Malone set the screen, John Stockton hit the game-winning three-point shot at the buzzer, and they were finally on their way. The Utah Jazz had just defeated the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the 1997 Western Conference Finals, advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time ever. Coach Jerry Sloan, referring to then 35-year-old Stockton playing in his 13th season and then 33-year-old Malone playing in his 12th season, commented on how they had done it. «These guys have been criticized the last few years for not getting to where we’re going, but I’ve always said that the most important thing in sports is to keep trying. Let this be an example of what it means to say it’s never over.»

«It’s never over» when you «keep trying,» or in other words when you -never quit. In their quest for the NBA championship, be assured in 2003 that this year’s playoffs are no different from any other -John Stockton and Karl Malone will never quit.

For any NBA player, the ultimate goal is to win the NBA championship because winning the championship means winning the title of ‘champion.’ ‘Champion’ is the most sought-after title for anyone because the word itself means ‘unstoppable.’ Of the 29 league-teams that compete for the championship annually there can only be one team that will win it, only one team that will not be stopped. The 12 players on the team that does win it in that particular year are the only ones who were not stopped. Championship-winning players can claim they are unstoppable for the rest of their lives because they are champions for the rest of their lives. Nothing can ever take that title away from them.

Champion-boxer Muhammad Ali said it best when describing the importance of becoming a champion. «I hated every minute of the training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'»

John Stockton and Karl Malone too are champions for one simple reason: both are unstoppable.

Before the 1997 NBA Finals, Stockton and Malone had been criticized for not reaching it as Sloan commented. Now, six years later since they lost their first NBA Finals appearance against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in 1997, and five years later since their second appearance in 1998, they have received criticism for not winning it. Without the championship it seems they are stoppable because they have not won the title of ‘champion.’ However, what their critics fail to realize is Stockton and Malone have not been stopped.

Stockton and Malone have remarkably led the Jazz to the playoffs every season of their careers. Stockton has made 18 consecutive appearances, starting in his rookie season of 1984-85; the Mailman has made 17 straight appearances, beginning with his first season of 1985-86. They hold the record for most playoff appearances without winning a championship. They also hold the record for playing in the most playoff games without winning a championship; Stockton has played in 177 games and Malone has played in 167 games. No other player in NBA history has been to the playoffs as many years or played in as many postseason games without winning the championship as Stockton or the Mailman.

No other player in NBA history has gotten back up as many times either.

«The greatest accomplishment is not in never falling, but in rising again after the fall,» Super Bowl-champion coach Vince Lombardi once said.

That is the «greatest accomplishment» of them all because it is the most difficult of them all. It is easy to get back up when you are winning because you are already up. To get back up when you are down -that is the hard part. To get back up again and again when you are down again and again -that is the hardest part.

Winning is difficult; it only comes to those who perform the «greatest accomplishment.» All of Stockton and Malone’s individual and team successes have resulted from never quitting.

Winning individually, as Jazz fans know, Stockton and Malone have become arguably the greatest players ever to play their positions. Briefly stated, Stockton is arguably the greatest point-guard ever because he is the all-time assist and steals leader. No one else has ever done that. The Mailman is arguably the greatest power-forward ever because he is currently the all-time second-leading scorer. No other forward has ever done that.

Winning as a team, Stockton and Malone have led Utah to become one of the most winning franchises ever. During the Stockton-to-Malone era the Jazz have had 11 seasons of 50 or more wins and three seasons of 60 or more wins. On March 26th of this year when Utah beat the Portland Trailblazers 94-85 (Stockton’s 41st birthday) the Jazz ensured themselves of extending their NBA record of consecutive winning seasons from 17, to 18 with their 42nd win on the year. No other team has ever done that.

All of Stockton and Malone’s future individual and team successes will also result from never quitting. Stockton and Malone can never be stopped because they never quit, and that is why they will win the championship.

Six years later, now 41-year-old Stockton playing in his 19th season and now 39-year-old (40 in July) Malone playing in his 18th season, will again return to this year’s playoffs expecting nothing less than to win the 2003 NBA championship. Of course, eventually the legends themselves will even have to retire from basketball one day (probably when they are 50 years old or so) and when that day does come, they will either have won or not won the championship. Either way, «it’s never over» because nothing can stop John Stockton and Karl Malone from never quitting.

KopTalk and Its Many Critics – A Brief History

KopTalk is a Liverpool FC website that was launched by Duncan Oldham and Colin Seaman back in 1999. At the time there was only a handful of LFC forums in existence and the official club site had yet to launch.

Seaman left the site shortly afterwards to pursue a successful career as a web designer, but KopTalk initially proved to be a popular forum, although opinion has always been divided as to whether this was due primarily to the abilities of the people who created the site, or was instead down to the wit, intelligence and knowledge of the site’s early members.

From the outset, KopTalk was a heavily commercialised website that specialised in transfer gossip. This approach owed a huge debt to the infamous Brian Bentley of the Team Talk site, who had pioneered a similar style during the mid-1990s.

Duncan Oldham very quickly launched various paid-for «services» on KopTalk, all of which were based on the promise of having access to «insider» information about what was going on behind the scenes at Liverpool Football Club. Within a year of KopTalk’s launch these included premium-rate telephone information lines, a «deluxe» email service and a «VIP» forum.

As a result, KopTalk has always been the subject of criticism within the broader online LFC fan community. Within a few weeks of the forum’s launch, it was already being mockingly referred to by some people as «Kraptalk». His critics have claimed that Duncan Oldham is motivated by a desire to make money rather than a heartfelt love for the football club and have accused him of fabricating transfer gossip for this reason, although Oldham himself has always refuted such claims.

At the end of 2001, a satirical site called Kraptalk was launched by Liverpool fans with the aim of poking fun at the techniques Duncan Oldham employed to drum up interest in KopTalk.

Over the years, a number of other Liverpool forums have been created as a result of a mass exodus of former KopTalk members who decided to leave the site. These include YNWA, TalkLFC, Est1892 and SixCrazyMinutes.

Early in 2006, the KopTalk Exposed blog was launched by concerned Liverpool fans, who wanted to hold Duncan Oldham’s behaviour up to public scrutiny. It has since amassed more than 1.6 million hits and over 800 articles. The site has always extended an open invitation to Duncan Oldham for him to come onto the blog and defend himself from the various accusations levelled at him, but Oldham has thus far failed to do so.

Growth of Pro-Kabbadi League in India

Introduction

Hero Indian Super League (ISL) is slowly becoming the most watched sports tournament after Indian Premier League (IPL). It had a total reach of 74.7 million on its launch day. With this trend, the total viewership of the tournament has reached such a level that it has become money-maker for the corporate world in India. If you look back at the history, you can safely conclude that it is second only to the T20 cricket tournament IPL. Other tournaments such as football leagues lag far behind in terms of total viewership. With the increase in popularity, even the people from the foreign countries have started participating in the later editions of this Pro-Kabbadi League. In this article, we would be looking at Pro-Kabbadi League across different editions to understand its growth in that country.

ISL Viewership

The Sports Channel network had done a survey of the most viewed tournaments in the sports arena. The survey looked at the reach of people in different national and regional channels. A total of 8 channels were brought under the online survey. ISL has grown in stature due to lot of publicity featuring the starlets from the land of dream merchants. It started with national channels and then moved to regional channels as well. The online survey has found that the ISL moved ahead of other tournaments, especially the second edition of football World Cup held in India. Other tournaments such as the I-League, the English Premier League and the Calcutta Football League have also fared far behind by a large margin. This is primarily due to the attractive packaging of the league matches to bring large herds of fans to the venues. The organizers have taken the cue from the success of Indian Premier League.

Viewer Statistics

The broadcaster Star Network aired the first ever edition of Pro-Kabbadi League two years ago. It went on to become the most-viewed sporting extravaganza in the country. However, it remained in the second place when compared to that of IPL. After reaching the viewership of 74.7 million in the first 10 days, ISL went on to attract a total of 435 million people when the tournament reached its crescendo in the second edition. This indicates that the viewership of kabbadi and football has increased over a time period and it is progressively increasing. With the chipping in of the marketing team, the reach of these two tournaments increased several fold in the third edition.

Man United, The Birth of a Star

Marcus Rashford: Who Is He, Where Did He Come from, and What Does His Presence Mean for Manchester United’s Future?

There’s an outside chance that Manchester United could still finish in the top three in the 2015/16 Premier League. Who knows, the football club could even collect some silverware this season, with both the FA Cup and the Europa League still up for grabs.

Still, by most metrics, the 2015/16 season has not been a terrific one for Man United. The Red Devils have failed to return to their previous heights of Premier League dominance, even with last season’s champions (Chelsea FC) flaming out of the title race early on. Rumors about Louis van Gaal exiting the job of manager-either by way of sacking or resignation-have also been commonplace this season. Even Adidas, United’s kit manufacturer, acknowledged how boring the team’s soccer squad has looked out on the field this season.

The Birth of a Star?

Regardless of these factors, though, there have still been a few bright spots in Manchester’s 2015/16 campaign. One of the brightest of these came in a February 25th home match against Denmark’s FC Midtjylland. The game, which functioned as the second leg of the Europa League’s round of 32, was a make-or-break moment for the Red Devils. They’d lost to Midtjylland 1-2 in the first leg and needed a clean win to push their way into the round of 16.

Rather than just skating through with a 1-0 win, though-which would have earned United a win in the round of 32 based on away goals-the Red Devils completely dominated the Danish football club. After falling behind 0-1 at the 27-minute mark, things looked dire for a moment Manchester. However, the former English champions got a reprieve when Midtjylland conceded an own goal just five minutes later and went on to play arguably the best 30 minutes of soccer they’ve played all season in the second half.

Man United scored four goals in the closing half hour of the match to win a decisive victory and put themselves in the next round of the knockout stage. Even more remarkably, the hero of the match was a complete unknown: 18-year-old forward Marcus Rashford. Rashford scored two goals in quick success to put the Red Devils up 3-1 over Midtjylland. Ander Herrara and Memphis Depay then followed with goals of their own, to turn United’s win into a bonafide season highlight. Talk about a turnaround.

The Story Behind Rashford’s Big Debut

Up until that February 25th Europa League fixture, Rashford had never featured in a senior football match before. Now, he’s one of United’s biggest up-and-coming stars. Could the youngster be United’s best chance of salvaging the soccer season?

To understand just what Rashford could mean to the Red Devils going forward-both in the final act of the 2015/16 and in the years to come-we have to look at how the 18-year-old attacker got his big break in the first place.

For most of the season, Rashford has been playing as part of United’s U-19 team. He’s no newcomer to Old Trafford: the 18-year-old has been a part of United’s youth program since 2005. Louis van Gaal even had Rashford as a substitute-on-bench for two Premier League games earlier in the season: a pair of November fixtures against Watford and Leicester City, respectively. Rashford didn’t ultimately see any playing time in either of those games, but a meticulous eye could have seen him as a potential up-and-coming talent from looking at United’s lineups.

Rashford finally made it onto the pitch in United’s February 25th match against Midtjylland because Louis van Gaal had no other choice. Wayne Rooney was out with a knee injury. Anthony Martial was sidelined (at the last minute, no less) with a hamstring injury, after getting hurt in the warm-up. Those two, who have traded off the role of center forward throughout the 2015/16 season, were among about a dozen players who Van Gaal had to leave out of the lineups for both the Midtjylland Europa League match and the following weekend’s Premier League match against Arsenal. In other words, the Dutch manager was running out of players to put on the pitch, and he turned to United’s youth academy for reinforcements.

That decision could have easily been a disastrous one. It could have given Manchester United’s board a reason to sack Louis van Gaal at last. An early elimination from the Europa League or a huge loss in that key EPL game against Arsenal would have been tough for the Red Devils (and, for that matter, their fans) to recover from.

A Record-Breaking Performance

Instead, Van Gaal got lucky. Rashford realized every bit of his potential in the February 25th Midtjylland match, taking up Rooney’s role as center forward and coming away with two goals. The first of those two made Rashford the youngest Manchester United player ever to score in a European competition. The second made him one of the most talked about talents in the world of soccer.

The achievement wasn’t a fluke, either: just three days later, Rashford made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford, taking the center forward position against Arsenal. At the 29-minute mark, Rashford broke the ice and scored the first goal of the match (and the first goal of his Premier League career). He’s the third youngest United player ever to score in an EPL game, after Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck. Three minutes later, he scored again.

Ironically, Danny Welbeck scored Arsenal’s first goal of the match at the 40-minute mark, but it wasn’t enough. In a competitive match that saw Manchester United trailing in possession time and relying largely on defense, Rashford’s early brace provided the edge the Red Devils needed to grab a win. He even provided the assist that allowed Herrara to bring United’s goal total to three in the second half. He was absolutely, unequivocally, the man of the match.

The Next Chapter

The question now is how Marcus Rashford will fit into Manchester United’s lineup as the football club’s many injured players start coming back into the game. Anthony Martial is expected to make a quick recovery from his relatively minor injury. Rooney’s sideline spell will probably last a bit longer, but when both men are back to full heath, where will that leave Rashford?

With all of the praise that is understandably coming Rashford’s way right now-and with how the youngster saved Man United from almost certain defeat in a pair of key matches-it would be tough to leave him on the bench or send him back to the U-19 squad. With the win against Arsenal and Manchester City showing some pretty glaring weaknesses in the past few weeks, the Red Devils could have a chance to snag a podium position before the season runs out. To get there, though, he’ll need someone who injects excitement and momentum into United’s often dry play style, and Marcus Rashford might just be the best man for the job.

Then again, Marcus is very young, and as Van Gaal has noted, a lot of praise and pressure could easily go to his head. Is this teenager with just two senior starts under his belt really ready to take up the center forward role on a permanent basis? And if he does become a regular part of the lineup, who will get pushed out of the squad? Will it be fellow forward Memphis Depay, who has been something of a disappointment since coming to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven? Will it be Anthony Martial, who Louis van Gaal paid so handsomely for last summer? Will it be winger and rising star Jesse Lingard?

Only time will tell what decision Louis van Gaal will make going forward, and frankly, it’s not an enviable one. Still, we hope we’ll be seeing a lot more of Marcus Rashford on the field during the last few months of the 2015/16 season. The 18-year-old debutante has, quite simply, given Manchester United supporters something to cheer for again.

Do you think Rashford can help turn things around at Manchester United? Could the Red Devils still manage a Champions League qualification and some potential silverware from the FA Cup or the Europa League?

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Girlfriend Gemma Atkinson Accused Of Lying About Dating The Man UTD Footballer

Cristiano Ronaldo’s girlfriend Gemma Atkinson has been accused of lying about having a relationship with the Manchester United midfielder by his own mother.

The former Hollyoaks actress had been rumoured to be dating Cristiano Ronaldo for the past few months, although the couple have never actually been spotted together.

Ronaldo’s girlfriend Gemma has been very open about her relationship with Cristiano, stating to the British media that they were a couple on several occasions. Ronaldo’s girlfriend has also reportedly said that the couple are enjoying some great, hot sex together. Cristiano Ronaldo has been far less open about their relationship, and now his mother has stepped in to the argument by accusing Gemma Atkinson of lying.

Ronaldo’s mother lives in her son’s homeland, Portugal, and she hasn’t heard anything about her son dating Gemma Atkinson. This has led her to believe that Gemma has fabricated the whole story, and that she has never had any kind of relationship with the young, sexy actress.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun newspaper, Dolores Aveiro, Cristiano Ronaldo’s mum, was quoted as saying «Cristiano doesn’t have a girlfriend. I put my hands in the fire as he did not go with the girl people say is his girlfriend. I don’t know her and don’t care if she’s beautiful.» Ronaldo’s mum firmly believes that Gemma Atkinson is simply jealous that she can’t be with Cristiano, and is trying to raise her own profile and make a name for herself by pretending to be dating the Manchester united star midfielder.

It remains to be seen whether Cristiano is simply keeping their relationship a secret from his mother and from the worldwide media, and that his mum is simply being over-protective on behalf of her son by denying the claims that he is dating Gemma Atkinson. However according to Gemma’s closest friends Cristiano and Gemma are a couple, and that judging by the texts they send each other they are very much happy together.
