Australian Fishing Travel – Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge

The Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge offers one of the most amazing remote sport fishing adventures available anywhere in the world and continues to attract repeat guests year after year.

The wonders of Arnhem Land in Australia’s far north provide world-class fishing for Barramundi and more than 30 other sensational sport and reef fishing species. Catering primarily for those seeking an incredible fishing experience, the lodge also offers amazing bird watching and observance of some of the countries finest aboriginal culture.

The Location

Situated on the far north coast of Australia’s Northern Territory, Arnhem Land is the largest and most remote Aboriginal land reserve in the country. The Lodge is located on the coast near the Maningrida Aboriginal community, approximately 400 kilometres (60 minutes by air) to the north east of Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory.

Arnhem Land was declared in the 1930’s as inalienable Aboriginal freehold land, a unique title in its form. In the 1950’s the settlement of Maningrida was established at the mouth of the Liverpool River flowing into the Arafura Sea on Australia’s far north coast. Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge is located on a private escarpment just 20 minutes from Maningrida.

Getting There…

Although accessible by road, seasonal flooding limits this option as it regularly creates impassable road conditions. Guests are in most cases flown in and out on scheduled flights via the regional airline, Airnorth. A private airstrip is available for those who choose to charter a private plane.

The Local Environment

The landscape ranges from rocky sandstone plateau and escarpment to the south, down the catchment through to gently rippled lowland plains to vast floodplains and coastal terrain.

Virtually endless open Eucalyptus forests are the dominant vegetation of the region comprising almost 40% of the area.

Around the estuarine areas of Maningrida are some 34 Mangrove species, mainly occurring as a fringe immediately adjacent to the Liverpool River system.

The Climate

The Lodge is located in the seasonal tropics and has a distinctive wet and dry season. Typically of tropical environment, the summer season is wet with almost all rain falling between December and April.

The dry season between June and September is notable for its complete lack of rain. The between months of October and November are known as periods of temperature and humidity change as the monsoon troughs start to move in from the south.

The Fishing

The only other thing you will need (apart from your fishing gear) is your personal necessities such as medications, toiletries etc. Soap, linen and towels are provided.

In Conclusion…

This has to be one of the finest Barramundi adventures available in Australia and comes highly recommended. The fishing is extraordinary, due not only to the location but also the experience and knowledge of the lodge guides.

The accommodation is comfortable and easy. The dining is excellent, particularly the snacks served in the bar area prior to the evening meal. Overall the entire experience will almost certainly surpass all expectations.

Forts of Malabar – St. Angelo’s Fort Or Kannur Kotta

MALABAR, AN INTRODUCTION:

Malabar lies along the southwest coast of the Indian peninsula and falls within the state of Kerala and. It lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Its name is believed to an amalgamated derivation between the Malayalam word Mala meaning Hill and the Persian (or Arabic) words Barr (Kingdom/port/continent). The name Malabar also has connotations to mean the hill country, a name well suited to its physical characteristics. Malabar is also used by ecologists to refer to the tropical moist forests of southwestern India. It is one of the oldest inhabited areas of Asia and the ancestors of today’s population have inhabited the region for centuries. This region formed part of the ancient kingdom of the Cheras for centuries. It was absorbed as a part of the Great Hindu Empire, The Vijayanagara or the city of Victory in the 15th Century. The capital of the empire was located at Hampi. Under the combined onslaught of its rival Muslim armies, Vijayanagara fell after the battle of Talikota in 1565. The destruction of the kingdom resulted in the emergence of local, yet powerful rulers. Considering its historical importance and prosperous spice trade, the region was coveted by the local rulers as well as the colonialists. Earlier dominated by the Portuguese followed by the Dutch and subsequently the English, this was a region to die for! The region finally came under British rule in the 18th century, during and after the Anglo-Mysore Wars.

Today’s Malabar region predominantly comprises of the districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragode, Wayanad etc. In keeping with its military past, the region comprises of many forts. There are mainly five standing forts in and around the Region-the St. Angelo’s Fort, Thalassery Fort, the Bekal Fort, Chandragiri Fort and the Hosdurg Fort. This article is the first of the series and will explore the St. Angelo’s Fort or the Kannur Kotta (Kotta in Malayalam means Fort).

St. Angelo’s Fort (also known as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kota), is a fort facing the Arabian Sea, situated 3 km from the town of Kannur. Kannur located in the green & beautiful state of Kerala in India. It has always been a political nerve centre. This characteristic of the place is maintained even today-it is still the hotbed of local politics. Considering its association with the lucrative spice trade, it was also the playground of colonialists like the Portuguese, Dutch & English. As is well known, architecture can convey many perceptions including that of strength. The forts were predominantly meant to store spices and other items for trade, offer safety to colonial officers and also at times a prison for political detainees. The forts primarily conveyed to the local populace a sense of its occupant’s invincibility. Their importance is such that they are imprinted in the psyche of the inhabitants.

History

St. Angelo’s Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India and is on the Arabian Sea about 3 km west from Kannur town in Northern Kerala. It is a massive triangular laterite fort and characterized by flanking bastions and has a moat to protect it from aggressions. It has a sea wall projecting from the fort separating the rough sea and inland water. From the fort one can have a breathtaking and fascinating view of the Dharmadom Island and a natural fishing bay called the Mappila Bay Harbour. The Dharmadom Island is a small one occupying 5 acres in total area and is situated about 100 meters from the mainland in the Arabian Sea and the Mappila Bay is a natural fishing bay that is being turned into a modern fishing harbour. The only Muslim Dynasty of Kerala-The Arakkal family ruled from nearby location. As a reminder of its past, the Arakkal Mosque and its erstwhile palace are located nearby.

A seashore fort, it appears to be etched against the blue skylines and is a beautiful sight especially in the early mornings and sunset. Needless to say it’s a photographer’s delight. Its Imposing walls have remained an Icon of Portuguese power on the Malabar Coast. Surprisingly, despite the typical Indian disdain for history and its remnants, this fort has been well maintained. One of the dominant characteristics of this fort is its large field guns pointing out menacingly from the bastions. This fort symbolizes dominance and power. It is one of the most frequented politico-commercial structures.

Adding to its mysterious aura is its chequered history. It changed hands many times over. On August 1509 Almeida refused to accept the appointment of Afonso de Albuquerque’s as the new Portuguese governor. Desperate to continue as the boss of what he considered «the gains of his hard work»; he went to war with Albuquerque in what is today known as the naval Battle of Diu. After defeating his fleet Almeida arrested Albuquerque and imprisoned him in this fortress. He obtained his freedom only after three months of confinement, after the arrival of a larger fleet from Portugal in October 1509. After the mutiny was suppressed, Albuquerque went on to be the governor.

In 1663, the fort was captured by the Dutch from the Portuguese. They sold it to Ali Raja (Belonging to the Arakkal Dynasty) of Kannur. After the ascend of the British in Kerala, they aspired to control the fort that had by this time become the locus of power in the Malabar Coast. In 1790, the British seized control of the fort. Understanding its strategic importance as well as its place in the minds of the local populace, they renovated & strengthened it and transformed it as their most important military station in Malabar. According to lore, the British connected the St. Angelo’s fort to the Thalassery Fort through a secret underground tunnel. There could be some truth in it. Thalassery fort was the first place from where the British started their «trade». Thalassery fort is also located at a distance from the St. Angelo’s fort and such a tunnel would have come in handy in case of an attack at either of these locations. As a reminder of its glorious past, the barracks, the magazine, and its cannons are still intact in the fort. A painting of this fort and the fishing harbour behind it can be seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

After India’s independence from the British in 1947, Kannur continued to be considered strategically important. The fort continued to be a symbol of military power and falls within the Kannur cantonment where the Indian Military has a significant presence. The spirits of the past still echoes within the walls of this fort and continues to enthrall its visitors. One of them is a policeman called Sathyan Edakkad. He has spent most of his life in and around the fort and is a walking encyclopedia for the fort and its legends. He went on to write and publish a book in Malayalam language «Vasco da Gamayum, Charitrathile Kaanapurangalum» (loosely translated as Vasco da Gama and the unseen pages of history). Visit it to believe it. But before you go, read a bit about Kannur’s turbulent history. Only then would one be able to understand its importance.

World Cup Goalkeepers – Zeljko Kalac, Australia

Zeljko Kalac is an Australian goalkeeper of Croatian descent who made his international debut in 1992. Since then he has played in over 50 international games, his most celebrated stint being with AC Milan.

Known as the Spider on account of his two meter plus frame and flailing arms, Kalac started his career with Sydney United. He later moved to Leicester in Europe but it was not an eventful sojourn.

A call to Roda JC, a little later, gave Kalac the push he needed. The Dutch side reached the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in 2002, and Kalac moved to Serie A with Perugia. Luck smiled on Kalac when Perugia’s fortunes dipped, and Kalac found himself as the back up keeper to the celebrated Dida in the AC Milan goal.

An ankle injury to Dida brought Kalac into his own. Besides Champions League, Kalac got a chance to play in Coppa Italia. The preparations for World Cup 2006 saw Kalac being summoned to do national duty, as deputy to Mark Schwarzer.

Kalac may not be number one goalkeeper of the Socceroos but he certainly is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the game. He is also the most reliable, and can be expected to keep most forwards at bay.

How to Play Fantasy Basketball

With the start of the NBA season underway, NBA fans across the country are lining up to play fantasy basketball. The two most popular formats being used include season long fantasy leagues and daily NBA fantasy contests. Both formats are available online through popular sports sites like Yahoo.com, NBA.com, DraftKings.com and FanDuel.com among others. Each format requires a different approach, which provides a little something for players of all experience levels.

NBA Fantasy Leagues

For years now, fantasy sports leagues have been run for the benefit of managers who want to manage their own team through the rigors of an entire season. While most leagues are played for fun, some league commissioners will organize leagues with an entry fee and prize money being distributed at the end of the season.

The process starts with an organized draft. The most popular draft format is the standard "snake-draft" where a players' draft position is determined by random draw. For returning keeper leagues, the draft positions might be determined by the manager's placing in the prior season. Over the past few years, auction drafts have increased in popularity. With this format, each manager is given a bankroll, which is used to bid on players until their roster is full.

In both formats, each manager is required to draft a full team of players based on the league's setup configuration. Most leagues have as many as 10 starting roster positions plus bench players. Depending on the league's rules, managers can make player moves on either a daily basis or weekly basis. Scoring is determined by league rules and the competition is head-to-head on a weekly basis. Towards the end of the season, the teams with the best overall records head off into the playoffs, which usually cover the last 2-3 weeks of the NBA regular season.

Daily NBA Fantasy Contests

For managers who like their action fast and furious with cash on the line, popular fantasy sites provide access to daily contests. These daily contest come in a variety of formats that are listed on the website. Managers can choose to compete heat-to-head with a smaller group of managers ranging from 2 to 25 contestants. These contests are usually designed and posted by one of the contestants who then open up the entry process to any contestant who would like to participate based on the contest's setup. The entry fees range from $ 5 all the way up to $ 1,000 per contestant. While some contests are winner takes all, contests with more than 10 contestants might offer small consolation prizes. In all contests, the fantasy sports site will take a fee (usually 10%) to cover administrative costs plus profits.

The other popular format is sponsored contests provided by the website. These contests usually have thousands of entries with huge guaranteed prize packages in the offering for a relatively small entry fee. The larger the participation in these contests, the higher the number of places that will get paid. The prize packages might include large cash prizes, consumer goods or special event prize packages where something like a Super Bowl weekend might be on the line. Many times, managers can earn a free entry fee by winning smaller satellite contests along the way.

The contest rules and scoring parameters are provided by the website. Each manager gets a salary cap (normally $ 50,000) to use when selecting players. Each player that is scheduled to play on a given night will be assigned a salary cap value. Obviously, the better the player, the higher the value. The team structure is usually PG, SG, SF, PF, C, G, F, and UTIL player.

Now that you have a general idea how to play fantasy basketball, it's time to join in the fray. If you choose to play in daily contests, you need to remember that a lot of managers have a significant amount of experience, which might leave you at a disadvantage. The bottom line is you should never put more money on the line than you can afford to lose.
