Spanish Primera Division News and Notes

There has been a great deal of action and excitement over the past couple of weeks in the Spanish Primera Division, and the news and results have been coming in fast and furious since the season ended just two weeks ago. Let’s take a look at everything that has transpired over the course of the past few days to get an early look at what the Primera Division will look like next year.

Barcelona Retains Crown

Barcelona was able to win the Primera Division again this year by beating Valladolid 4-0 in the final game of the season. Barcelona was also able to set a Primera Division record this season by accruing 99 total points over the course of 38 games played. Lionel Messi led all scorers this season on Barcelona with 34 goals in league play and 47 goals in all competitions, which tied the club record set by Ronaldo in the 1996-1997 season. Real Madrid, despite having one of the highest payrolls in Primera Division history, was only able to garner second place. Finishing three points behind Barcelona, Real Madrid finished runner-up for the second straight season despite having one of the greatest collections of players ever assembled on one team.

Team Movements

Next season, the UEFA Champions League will be the homes of Valencia and Sevilla, as both teams qualified through their finishes of third and fourth, respectively, within the Spanish Primera Division. 5th-place Mallorca and 6th-place Getafe have secured spots in next season’s UEFA Europa League while Valladolid, Tenerife, and Xenex have all been placed in the second division.

Summer Transfers

Ricardo Costa has been transferred to Valencia on four-year free deal. Costa had been playing for Lille, but Valencia’s inclusion into the UEFA Champions League forced them to have to make this deal. Costa joins Mehmet Topal, a midfielder from Turkey, who also was signed just a few weeks ago to strengthen the Vallencia team going into next season’s play.

Barcelona continues to get stronger, as they worked out a deal with rival Vallencia to transfer David Villa to the Barcelona squad. Villa has passed his physical examination and is now a member of the powerful Barcelona championship team. In his last five seasons, Villa has averaged 22 goals scored per season, which ranks him near the top of that category in La Liga.

Atletico Madrid, who were able to clinch the inaugural UEFA Europa League title, has gained a transfer in the likes of Arsenal’s Fran Merida. Merida comes to Atletico Madrid on a free transfer for a four-year deal. Merida hasn’t seen a great amount of big-game action since joining the Arsenal squad in 2005.

Sevilla has gotten Mouhamadou Dabo from AS Saint-Etienne on a free transfer. Dabo’s agreement with Sevilla extends the length of four seasons. Part of Dabo’s contract will include a 25 million euro buyout clause. Dabo, a fullback is able to play on either side of the field, with most of his time from this past season spent on the left side of the field.

Coaching Change

Real Madrid parted ways with coach Manuel Pelligrini to bring Jose Mourinho as their new coach for next season’s play. Pellegrini departs at the midpoint of the new two-year deal that he signed before the beginning of this past season. Mourinho, who is currently under contract with Inter Milan until 2012, will need to work out a plan with that squad before he can make settle in to his new home with Real Madrid.

Contract Extension

A one-year contract extension has been given to Atletico Madrid’s coach Quique Sanchez Flores. After winning the inaugural UEFA Europa League title, Flores led Atletico Madrid to a 9th-place finish in the Spanish Primera Division this past season.

I Used to Scoff at People Who "Forgot To Eat"

I used to scoff at people who would say they were so busy they «forgot to eat.»

When I was in college, I was an art major and spent many, many hours in the art department building working on projects. I remember being there late at night or working the weekends away, and other students would lament that they hadn’t eaten all day because they were so focused they «forgot.»

How could someone forget to eat??

I never seemed to be able to stop thinking about food, as much as I wanted to. I was either considering when it was time to go eat or scrutinizing if I’d eaten too much or trying to watch portions so that I could lose weight.

One day several years later, I was at marketing conference and invited to a fancy restaurant to join a group of highly successful entrepreneurs. As I looked over the menu, I could see there was nothing less than $50 on the menu. Focusing more on what I was going to order than the people around me, I dropped out of the conversation. I became wrapped up in trying to decide what would be filling but not fattening, the best choice for my money, etc.

Across the table from me was a woman who was absolutely gorgeous. Not just beautiful in the traditional sense, but stunning in every part of her being: the way she carried herself, her laugh, her colorful, form-fitting dress, everything. I was captivated by how comfortable she seemed in her body, classy and poised yet bold.

As the waiter came and took our orders, this woman ordered several rich appetizers, a salad and a main course. I was mildly surprised, wondering where she was going to put all the food since she was very slim.

Throughout the meal, I noticed the woman took a bite here, a bite there… but mostly stayed completely involved in the conversations around her. She seemed completely engaged in the people she was talking with, and disinterested in her plate. As the waiter came and took plates away, the guy next to her commented that she hadn’t touched much.

I can still hear her voice in my head saying, «Yeah, I enjoy the presentation and savoring the best things on the menu, but it’s boring after a few bites.»

I had never thought about food that way before. Food could be boring? It was always something I was either looking forward to or trying not to obsess over… but never boring.

This woman clearly thought about food differently than I did. And, to be completely vein, I could see that clearly her thoughts were serving her figure and her level of enjoyment more than mine were.

Here I had devoted 30-40% of my attention at that dinner wrapped up in what I was ordering, how much it was, if it was too indulgent, etc. rather than being present with the amazing people around me. I was coming from a scarcity mindset both in my attitude towards money as well as food.

This woman clearly didn’t bat an eye at the prices, was quite happy to enjoy savoring the richest bites and was fully attentive to the people around her. She was operating from a place of authentic abundance on multiple levels, and she gave off that vibe. It was captivating to all those around her, including me.

Both the art students from college and this woman stuck out in my mind as I became seriously upset with my relationship with food.

I had grown up in a family that loved to eat; food was involved with socializing, rewarding, playing, relaxing. Forgetting to eat or being so extravagant would have been brushed off as «unhealthy» or «wasteful» – negative connotations.

Yet these people didn’t occur to me now to be unhealthy or wasteful. They simply had another approach. I started to see a whole world of beliefs or «invisible scripts» I had about food (and money, and scarcity). The more I started to look at how other people that I admired approached food, I learned there are reasons OTHER THAN THE FOOD to go to a nice restaurant. I also learned that there were many other ways to think about food, and none are «right» or «wrong.» They’re just different ways-and if the way I was approaching food wasn’t serving me any longer, than I needed to experiment with other ways.

(Likewise with the ways I approach money, or work, or sex… but that’s another rabbit hole too deep to get into here.)

I also realized that if you try to change your approach around the people who are comfortable with the way you have always been, it can be extremely difficult.

Most people aren’t comfortable with change-and they aren’t comfortable with YOU changing because it throws off their perception of you and challenges their own beliefs.

Which is why, If you politely decline a piece of cake at a birthday party, they’ll probably say, «Come on, it’s Susie’s birthday! You can at least have a small piece… «

So not only are you facing questioning your own beliefs, you’re also up against forces that don’t want you to change the way you are. This is why SO MANY people fail to create new habits or routines in their life, even with the best of intentions. It’s a very tough wall to climb.

If I had stayed with my old beliefs and patterns that were comfortable to those around me, I’d still have a binge eating disorder. I’d still be desperate and quietly dying inside, hating myself and losing motivation across all areas of my life.

Guess what? It’s NORMAL to grow, to feel dissatisfied with where things currently are and to yearn for more. Life is about growing, changing and evolving. You see it everywhere around you: in nature, childhood, education, investing, etc.

There’s nothing bad or «wrong» with you for wanting more, or for questioning your current approach to food (or any area of your life). While those around you may suggest that it’s better to stay as you are, I’m here to cheer for you WANTING MORE.

Not just more satisfaction with your relationship with food. More fun. More play. More peace. More wealth. More success.

How are you going to get MORE?

It starts by figuring out what’s keeping you where you’re at.

If you ask yourself why you haven’t already gotten to that «more» point, what’s your answer? What reasoning do you come up with? Keep in mind that your brain is going to rationalize in any way that it can as to why you can’t grow or change. Remember the animal brain? The part that is committed to your survival? That part doesn’t like change. It will fight it in any way that it can, because it’s the unknown where it cannot ensure your survival. So you’re going to have all sorts of excuses coming up when you try to change what you’re doing now.

But before you get too stuck in a battle of wills with yourself, trying to force a new approach, look for people that have achieved that «more» state that you would like for yourself. Who has a relationship with food that you admire? Who has created peace, wealth or success in a way that you would like to?

What’s different about their approach? See if you can guess what beliefs they have about themselves and these areas of their lives.

The more examples you can find, the better. Then experiment. Play with a new approach for a day. If it suits you, keep it for another day.

If it means going into the fanciest restaurant in your city and ordering the most indulgent items on the menu, taking a bite or two of each and then being finished with the meal… try it.

If it means investing in a new coat that’s three times more than what you «should» pay (but you know you’ll wear it for the next 6 years because you love it so much)… try it.

If it means taking a day off from work in the middle of the week to stay at home and watch your favorite movies all day because you need a break… try it.

Whatever you experiment with, the more uncomfortable it feels to do it-the better.

That’s a good indication that you’re on the path to challenging your deeply-rooted beliefs and transforming into the next phase of yourself.

The more, the better…

Stansted Airport London – An Independent Travellers Guide

Of London’s airports, Stansted Airport is furthest from the centre of London, nearly 40 miles. The airport is dominated by low cost budget airlines and in particular Ryanair and easyJet, Europe’s largest low cost airlines.

The overwhelming majority of flights are European or UK domestic flights.

The airport also has significant charter traffic, particularly for the British travelling on package tours to the sun.

The main intercontinental and state carriers like British Airways, Virgin, American and Singapore Airlines all use London’s Heathrow or Gatwick Airports.

The airport is an established airport but was relaunched 15 years ago with a brand new terminal and infrastructure, including a direct rail link and motorway to London. At first it was a white elephant but the emergence of the low cost budget carriers has transformed Stansted into one of the fastest growing airports in Europe in the last decade.

Today, full capacity of the main terminal is within sight and a new terminal and further out a second runway is planned.

There are no surprises with the terminal itself, all the standard facilities are in place including choice of foreign exchange, pharmacies, news stands etc. There is a good range of eating opportunities ranging from fast food and pub food through to sit down restaurants. In common with all airports run by BAA, the owner, there is a lot of luxury shopping outlets. But remember, the vast majority of flights from Stansted are within the EEC and do not qualify for duty free status.

It normally takes around 30 minutes from touch down to exiting customs with most flights if you have luggage. There is an airport information desk immediately outside customs and a desk for AirportCarz who have a monopoly on taxi services at the airport. Taking a taxi to London is only used by a very small minority of passengers because of the distance and expense.

If your destination is London, the quickest option is to take the Stansted Express train. The train station is underneath the terminal so you just descend to the platforms by escalators or lifts.

The Stansted Express takes 45 minutes to London’s Liverpool Street Station and runs about every 15 minutes during the day. Last trains are around midnight. The fares on the Stansted Express are expensive, well over $US40 for a single return fare. The Liverpool Street terminus is also not very convenient for most travellers, being sited in the middle of the financial district of London, 3-5 miles from most of the most popular hotel accommodation. The train stops at an intermediate stop called Tottenham Hale, 10 minutes before Liverpool Street, an interchange with the London Underground (Victoria Line).

Many of the airlines will sell tickets for the Stansted Express, some at a discount, before landing at Stansted Airport.

The budget transfer option into London is to take one of four scheduled coach services run by National Express and Terravision. There is a large, modern coach station in front of the terminal, adjacent to the rail station.

The cheapest option is the Terravision service to Liverpool Street Station, the same route as the Stansted Express. The price is about half that of the Stansted Express Train. Downside like all road based transfers is the London traffic, on a good day the coach will make it in about an hour. National Express run services about every 30 minutes to nearby Stratford Underground at a similar price.

The other route taken by the coaches is Stansted to London Victoria. Both have return fares around $US25. The Terravision service is non-stop, the National Express service makes stops through central London, many of them close to the major hotel districts. The National Express service is a true 24×7 service, the Terravision service only stops for a couple of hours early morning. Some of the highest frequencies are around midnight Stansted-London and very early morning London-Stansted for the first and last flights when the Stansted Express and London Underground have shut down.

Because of the sometimes extraordinarily cheap fares of Ryanair and easyJet a lot of transcontinental travellers have found it cheapest to fly into Heathrow and then complete their journey to their European destination using a low cost airline from Stansted.

National Express run shuttle services between Heathrow and Stansted from the coach station at Stansted. There are usually a couple of services an hour, the journey taking around 90 minutes (though delays on the motorway are almost routine at rush hours). The fare is not cheap either. The return fare is about $US50. It is cheaper to use the indirect National Express service to Stratford and then catch the London Underground to Heathrow, but less comfortable.

If you want to stay over at Stansted Airport before a flight there are plenty of options available. Like all airport hotels at London, room rates are normally much cheaper at weekends than mid-week. If you are transiting from Heathrow or Gatwick which have much fiercer competition, you will probably find rates more expensive at Stansted, particularly in the budget sector.

Immediately adjacent to the terminal is the luxury Stansted Radisson SAS, the only airport hotel where you do not need a hotel transfer vehicle. This is perhaps the most luxurious hotel and at weekends rates can be fairly competitive. The original luxury hotel at Stansted is the 4 star Hilton Hotel on the airport perimeter. The Hilton Stansted runs its own shuttle bus from the coach station about every 30 minutes.

In the immediate vicinity of the airport is an Express by Holiday Inn and a Best Western. The consistently cheapest option is the Days Inn on a motorway services area at the entrance to Stansted Airport. It provides no airport transfer facility itself though of course there are taxis and a local bus service.

Apart from the chains there are a lot of independent hotels in the vicinity. These feature hotels for all budgets and tastes, ranging from Country House Hotels, to pubs to traditional Bed and Breakfasts. The countryside around Stansted is surprisingly unspoilt and there is opportunity to stay in a traditional market town or coaching inn for example.

There are some superb limos to be found in the North West. On a par with limousine hire London is limousine hire Manchester with some of the finest Hummer H2 limos to be found anywhere in the UK. This includes the silver triple axle Hummer H2 limousine, an amazing yellow triple axle Hummer H2 called the Humbee and the silver Hummerzine which is the tallest Hummer H2 limousine in the UK. The fantastic Audi Q7 limousine and Range Rover Sport limousine can also be hired in the North West along with the BMW X5 limousine and a quality selection of stretch Lincoln Town Cars.

There are also some of the best fire engine limos to be found in the UK mainly in Manchester and Liverpool and probably the greatest collection of Jeep Expedition limos to be found anywhere. All are brand new and available in black, white, pink and silver and kitted out with the latest mod cons and gadgets such as DVD players, Flat Screen TV's and Surround Sound Systems.

The North West comprises five counties namely Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire. Major towns and cities in the North West include Chester, Crewe, Macclesfield and Warrington (Cheshire), Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle (Cumbria), Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Salford, Stockport and Wigan (Greater Manchester), Blackburn , Blackpool, Burnley and Lancaster (Lancashire) and Liverpool, St Helens and Wirral (Merseyside).

Limousine hire in the North West covers all these areas and more and can be rented for any occasion or event. This includes hen nights, stag nights, school proms, weddings, corporate events, airport transfers, birthdays, race days, shopping sprees, anniversaries or maybe just a night out on the town. In fact stretch limos in the North West can be used for practically any occasion.

It is always a good idea to book your limousine early, in fact the earlier the better. This is particularly true for key dates such as weddings and school proms as these events are the most popular for limousine hire. By booking early not only will you avoid disappointment and hire the limousine you want but you may also get a very competitive price. This is because limousine companies are always keen to rent their limos out rather than have them sitting in the depot and there is no way of knowing how busy a particular day is likely to be. You will find that as that date approaches and demand increases the cost of the rental will increase considerably, in some case as high as 50 percent. Another way to keep limousine hire prices down is to rent midweek, again demand is the key. The most popular days of the week for limousine hire are Fridays and Saturdays. Therefore by booking on a less popular day such as a Sunday prices are likely to be much lower.

How to Play Fantasy Basketball

With the start of the NBA season underway, NBA fans across the country are lining up to play fantasy basketball. The two most popular formats being used include season long fantasy leagues and daily NBA fantasy contests. Both formats are available online through popular sports sites like Yahoo.com, NBA.com, DraftKings.com and FanDuel.com among others. Each format requires a different approach, which provides a little something for players of all experience levels.

NBA Fantasy Leagues

For years now, fantasy sports leagues have been run for the benefit of managers who want to manage their own team through the rigors of an entire season. While most leagues are played for fun, some league commissioners will organize leagues with an entry fee and prize money being distributed at the end of the season.

The process starts with an organized draft. The most popular draft format is the standard "snake-draft" where a players' draft position is determined by random draw. For returning keeper leagues, the draft positions might be determined by the manager's placing in the prior season. Over the past few years, auction drafts have increased in popularity. With this format, each manager is given a bankroll, which is used to bid on players until their roster is full.

In both formats, each manager is required to draft a full team of players based on the league's setup configuration. Most leagues have as many as 10 starting roster positions plus bench players. Depending on the league's rules, managers can make player moves on either a daily basis or weekly basis. Scoring is determined by league rules and the competition is head-to-head on a weekly basis. Towards the end of the season, the teams with the best overall records head off into the playoffs, which usually cover the last 2-3 weeks of the NBA regular season.

Daily NBA Fantasy Contests

For managers who like their action fast and furious with cash on the line, popular fantasy sites provide access to daily contests. These daily contest come in a variety of formats that are listed on the website. Managers can choose to compete heat-to-head with a smaller group of managers ranging from 2 to 25 contestants. These contests are usually designed and posted by one of the contestants who then open up the entry process to any contestant who would like to participate based on the contest's setup. The entry fees range from $ 5 all the way up to $ 1,000 per contestant. While some contests are winner takes all, contests with more than 10 contestants might offer small consolation prizes. In all contests, the fantasy sports site will take a fee (usually 10%) to cover administrative costs plus profits.

The other popular format is sponsored contests provided by the website. These contests usually have thousands of entries with huge guaranteed prize packages in the offering for a relatively small entry fee. The larger the participation in these contests, the higher the number of places that will get paid. The prize packages might include large cash prizes, consumer goods or special event prize packages where something like a Super Bowl weekend might be on the line. Many times, managers can earn a free entry fee by winning smaller satellite contests along the way.

The contest rules and scoring parameters are provided by the website. Each manager gets a salary cap (normally $ 50,000) to use when selecting players. Each player that is scheduled to play on a given night will be assigned a salary cap value. Obviously, the better the player, the higher the value. The team structure is usually PG, SG, SF, PF, C, G, F, and UTIL player.

Now that you have a general idea how to play fantasy basketball, it's time to join in the fray. If you choose to play in daily contests, you need to remember that a lot of managers have a significant amount of experience, which might leave you at a disadvantage. The bottom line is you should never put more money on the line than you can afford to lose.
