Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tidbits

Those who live in the Miami area may – worried that they will be shunned from restaurants and country clubs – claim to be Dolphins fans, growing fins and living underwater in their spare time. But Miami, like any other city in a state with multiple football teams, likely has its fair share of Tampa Bay fans. Perhaps these folks once lived in Tampa Bay and moved to Miami. Perhaps they grew up watching Tampa Bay or know someone who played for them. Perhaps, they (gasp!) Would just rather be a Buccaneer than a Dolphin. For you Tampa Bay fans lingering in the city of Miami, this article is one you'll likely want to pirate.

Every NFL team has its fair share of history and trivia. But, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers possess some of the most interesting trivia around. Those who disagree will have to walk the plank.

Kings of the South : Tampa Bay is the only team in the NFC South to prevail as Super Bowl Champions. Though Atlanta and Carolina have reached the Super Bowl, they have yet to be victorious. New Orleans, on the other end of the spectrum, is one of a handful of teams to have never made it to the championship.

The Rich Get Richer : The owner of the Buccaneers, Malcolm Glazer, also owns the Manchester United, an England soccer team. The Manchester United is considered the richest sports organization in the entire world.

Oops : The 1976 Buccaneers are the only team in modern day NFL history to lose every single game in a season. Since the NFL went to a sixteen game season, in 1978, several teams have gone 1-15, but no one has gone 0-16. During the 1982 season, which was shortened by a strike, the Baltimore Colts had no victories, but they had one tie to accompany their eight losses.

He could go all the way … but he won't : The Buccaneers are the only NFL team that has never scored a touchdown on a kickoff return during a regular season game, a feat that has, up till the start of the 2006 season, been done over 1700 times by other teams. The Bucs have, however, scored five touchdowns on kickoff returns during preseason games.

A Pirate's Curse : No team that has lost a regular season game to Tampa Bay has ever won the Super Bowl. This, because of its years in existence, is known as the Tampa Bay Curse and haunts anyone who falls to the Bucs before season's end.

The Warm Weather Factor : Until the final regular season game of 2002, in which Tampa Bay defeated the Chicago Bears in Chicago, the Buccaneers had never won a game where the temperature at kickoff was less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Before beating the Bears, the Bucs had lost the twenty previous games played in cold weather.

Keeping it Real : Not only did the Bucs not do well in cold weather, but they also did do well playing on artificial grass. They once lost 27 games in a row played on artificial turf in outdoor stadiums. This losing streak spanned 15 years, from the 1980 season to the 1995 season.

Coach Potatoes : Tony Dungy, who recently led the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl victory and served previously as head of the Buccaneers, has seen four people from his Tampa Bay coaching staff make it as head coaches. Herman Edwards, an assistant under Dungy, coaches the Kansas City Chiefs; Rod Marinelli, a defensive coach under Dungy, coaches the Detroit Lions; Mike Tomlin, a defensive coach under Dungy, coaches the Pittsburgh Steelers; and Lovie Smith, a linebackers coach under Dungy, coaches the Chicago Bears. The former Buccaneers coaches met most recently in the 2007 Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay might not be a team full of Super Bowl rings or hall of fame names, but it's an interesting team nonetheless, and one that some Miami fans can't help but cheer for … even if done quietly.

Where to Buy a Machine Vise

Any wood working enthusiast will tell you the perfect addition to his set of tools is the machine vise. This is because these machines are versatile in what they can do, and allow you to press several pieces of wood together without worrying about clamping problems.

In fact, if you know someone in your family who is a miller, a milling machine vice could make a great gift, since a woodworker can never have enough vices for projects, which need to be completed. Any large project, which is undertaken, may require up to three different precision machine vises, depending on the size of what is being clamped and how long it needs to be held.

By purchasing a quality milling machine vise, you can be sure you are getting the right clamp you need for your project. Machine vises, which do not offer precision adjustments, are often bad for delicate work, as you could unknowingly cut into the wood while clamping it to ensure a seal. With precision vises, you will get the perfect clamp without cutting into the wood.

Because machine vises are such a popular item in any tool users’ arsenal, there are a wide variety of uses for them, not to mention the different styles, which are available. There are some types of vises, which can be applied freely in order to offer a firm clamp, and others, which attach to a table in order to ensure the perfect fit.

If you are not sure which type of machine vice you need, you should consider the benefits of both, and perhaps have both available in your tool arsenal. With free standing machine vises, you can complete your project and clamp it anywhere you wish. These are often best for larger projects.

With machine vices, that are large enough to be attached to a work bench or table, it is wise to have a smaller project, since the vise cannot be moved. Because they are anchored, these vises usually offer a superior grip, and can therefore clamp better than free standing varieties.

In addition to these types of machine vises, there are also large and small vices, depending on your needs. If you frequently work with wood, you should probably have several different sizes available at your disposal.

In addition, when shopping around for a machine vice, you will note that there are many manufacturers, which offer different pounds of pressure and precision control. Deciding how much compression power you need beforehand can help you pick the perfect vise.

Around the English Premier League – Round 26

The Citizens keep holding on the leadership, but not yet safe from the imminent danger that represents Manchester United; while Arsenal recovers very well from the Champions League's 4-0 defeat.
By Camilla Mancini

For this round all the changes of the standings where left for the lower half clubs, for the top 10 remain in the same positions. The most relevant change is from the relegation zone, from which the Wolves managed to escape one more time and to replace them in the 18th spot left Blackburn. The Rovers had no chance on Saturday against a Manchester City, which made its rival forget how they defeated United in the last visit they made to the city of Manchester. Instead the Citizens took control from the very beginning of the meeting and with the help of its three top scorers blasted whatever hopes the Rovers had. The Red Devils played until the next day and knowing that they had to achieve the triumph to not open up more the gap in between them and City, scored a last-minute goal.

So Manchester City hosted Blackburn and as mentioned before, left them goalless almost repeating the result from their 1st leg fixture, when the Sky Blues smashed the Rovers with a 4-0 that also included a goal from Balotelli. On Saturday it was Mario Balotelli the first one to get in the score sheet at 30 '; for the rest of first half although City controlled the ball couldn't convert another. Seven minutes after the restart Sergio Agüero score the second and within ten minutes from the end Edin Dzeko grabbed a pass from Kolarov and headed into Paul Robinson's goal. Including the three goals from Saturday, Roberto Mancini's leading strikers have given the squad 39 goals in the Premier season, in fact is the only club that has more than one player with 10 or more goals. The victory has left City with 63pts, still followed by United with 2 points less.

Meanwhile Tottenham continues with 53pts and now has the Gunners 3 points closer, with 46pts thanks to the surprising defeat at Emirates Stadium. Arsenal welcomed the Spurs to their London derby with its heavy artillery preparing to riddle them. Although the visitors started very well grabbing a double lead within the first 34 minutes, with an early goal from Louis Saha and a penalty charged by Emmanuel Adebayor, the Gunners just raised in power and started the bombardment.

Five minutes before the break the first goal was headed by Bacary Sagna -his first goal in 10 matches- and just 3 minutes later the 28-year-old captain, Robin Van Persie, even-up the scoreboard with an outstanding strike. At the return from the interval the midfielder Tomas Rosicky scored his first goal of the season; and just like that Arsenal was leading the game. Around ten minutes passed with both clubs looking for their next goal, but the openings were just for the Gunners, specifically just for Theo Walcott, who scored twice. At 65 'Walcott scored the fourth mark with help of his captain and the fifth after just 3 minutes with assistance from Alex Song. As if it wouldn't have been enough the beat-up the Spurs got, they also got Scott Parker sent-off by the referee when he received a second yellow card at the 87 '. The other matches from round 26: Wigan 0-0 Aston Villa; West Brom 4-0 Sunderland; QPR 0-1 Fulham; Newcastle 2-2 Wolves; Chelsea 3-0 Bolton; Norwich 1-2 Man. United; Stoke 2-0 Swansea.

British Local Radio Has Been Far Behind That in America

In America local radio is often broadcast to very small communities, sometimes the smaller the better. In the UK this is not the case and the areas covered tend to be much larger. I got to wondering why the Britain never really developed in the same way.

First of all though, wireless in the UK did indeed start out in the early 1920s as local radio with the first areas being Newcastle, Manchester and Birmingham. Lots of cities opened up stations but in a fairly short time they were closed and the BBC was set up as a national broadcasting station broadcasting from London.

In the 1960s Frank Gillard, who had been a well known war correspondent, started a movement to get local radio back onto the airwaves in the UK. He had been to the USA and was impressed with some of the ideas that he had seen there although his vision was more to provide a topical local news and sport variety rather than the music stations which were profligate there.

Around the same time, partly because of the technological advances which allowed for a larger range of frequencies to be available, there were a number of pirate radio stations operating from ships off the shores of the UK. These were more local by their very nature but the BBC did see them as a major threat. Although there was a great deal of reluctance from the BBC hierarchy, BBC local radio started with Radio Leicester on November 8th 1967.

It was not a full on station and only broadcast for a few hours each day. Very early on there were floods in the city centre and the local radio station provided a tremendous service in keeping the local inhabitants up to date with what was happening.

The British Broadcasting Corporation by its very name is a broadcaster and it has always stuck with the values of providing a broad range of subjects to its listeners. Over the last few years a number if independent local radio (ILR) stations have sprung up. They have gone much more down the narrowcasting route.

They tend to provide a more specific range of programs for their audience. This may be in the area of sport, music, politics or whatever.

Very soon the number of stations will increase dramatically. Digital radio has provided the opportunity of many more stations. I am sure that the future will see many stations in each big city and a number covering smaller rural areas throughout the UK. Perhaps each soccer team will have its local station, each orchestra likewise. In this way Britain will be closing the gap up with America.

FC Barcelona's Arch-Rival – The History of Real Madrid

Real Madrid – FIFA 'Team of the Century'; 31 League titles; 9 European Cups; a couple of UEFA Cups and World Club Champions titles.

Also, bizarrely, it is a club that has in recent years nurtured the custom of sacking successful managers. Jupp Heynckes went four weeks after winning a Champions League title, Fabio Capello and Bernd Schuster won the league title before one was basically sacked for being too defensive and the other for being too reckless. The prize, though, for what it's worth, goes to Vicente Del Bosque, current manager of the national squad, who was dismissed the day after winning the league in a room at the hotel in which his players were having their celebratory dinner!

Real Madrid originated in 1897 when a number of students and lecturers at the Institucíon Libre de Enseñanza began playing friendly matches on Sunday mornings. From these humble beginnings, Madrid Football Club emerged in 1902 – gaining its royal patronage and club name in 1920 from King Alfonso XIII. The club became founder members of the Spanish League in 1929 – when Barca won the inaugural title and El Clásico, as the fixture between the two clubs is known in Spain – began in earnest.

From the beginning, the rivalry was intense but it developed significantly during the years after the Civil War. There are, of course, many stories of the way Franco's government promoted the interests of Real Madrid in order to develop his, and Spain's, international prestige. Also, the manner in which Barcelona attempted to maintain a Catalan identity at a time when the language and flag were banned is well recounted. Barça became 'More than a Club' and the phrase Así gana el Madrid – that's how Madrid win – became part of Spanish sporting lore.

There are two of these stories, however, that perhaps shed most light on the situation in those difficult times.

In 1942, Barcelona had won the Spanish Cup – now known as the Cope del Rey but then renamed as the Copa del Generalísimo. The following season they were pitted against Real in a two-legged semi-final and won the first match convincingly, by three goals to nil, despite having their star player, Escolá, stretchered off. The second leg, though, was rather a different matter – finishing an astonishing 11 – 1 to Madrid. Not only was the Head of State Security known to have visited the Barça dressing room before the match to tell some of the players that their right to remain in Spain was being reviewed, but also the sending off of a player in the first few minutes made sure that the rest of the team got the right message!

The other classic example of the manner in which Barcelona feel they suffered during the Franco years concerns perhaps the most famous player ever to wear a Real Madrid shirt – Alfredo di Stéfano, who remains an iconic figure in the Madrid hierarchy even today. In 1953, the Argentinian center forward, described by Bobby Charlton as the most intelligent player he had seen, was signed by Barcelona from his Columbian club, Millonarios. After di Stéfano had appeared in a couple of friendly matches, and after an involved and underhand series of 'negotiations', the Spanish FA declared that the transfer was invalid and the player was triumphantly unveiled by Madrid. Two weeks later, he made his debut in a 5 – 0 victory over Barcelona in the Bernabéu – scoring four goals and starting his journey towards legendary status.

Even the transfer of Luis Figo in 2000 pales into insignificance compared to the machinations involved in the di Stéfano move.

With such a fierce, and continuing, rivalry between these two giant clubs, this puts the events of Barcelona's 3-0 away victory in 2000 into an even more dramatic perspective; that was the night that the Madrid supporters rose to their feet and applauded Ronaldinho after perhaps his best performance in the club's colors.

May in Rome is Football Time

Winning the Champions League Final is now seen by Europe’s top teams as the ultimate prize. No longer is winning the domestic title enough for the likes of the big four in the English Premier League, or the leading clubs participating in Spain, Italy and the rest of Europe.

Much is at stake, reputation, glory and money and this season’s Champions League has been nothing if not controversial. Now the climax that most neutrals have wanted is imminent; Manchester United will take on Barcelona in Rome on May 27th in the 2009 Champions league Final.

Barcelona’s spectacular last-gasp semi-final, second-leg added time winner denied Chelsea the chance to make the Final an all-English affair for the second year in a row, leaving the London-based team to lick their wounds and a certain Norwegian referee, embroiled in controversy to hurriedly exit the UK.

However, Manchester United’s place in the Final never looked in doubt from as early as 10 minutes into the semi-final, second leg when they stormed to a 2-0 lead on the night, eventually steamrollering Arsenal 4-1 on aggregate and breezing into the final berth. Now, the reigning Premier League champions are aiming to return the Champions League Cup to their trophy cabinet with a win over Barcelona. But, having lost their appeal to UEFA, United will face the Spanish giants without key defender Darren Fletcher who was sent off during the second-leg semi for a foul on Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas. Rio Ferdinand is also a big doubt as he struggles to overcome injury, but that won’t stop as many Manchester United fans as possible attempting to book their ticket to Rome.

Advice to non-football fans planning a trip to the Italian capital – avoid the last week of May! While in town both sets of supporters will no doubt be taking the opportunity to see what else the beautiful city has to offer, meaning that Rome hotels, restaurants and bars will be packed with tens of thousands of Mancunians and Catalonians. So, unless you can stand frenzied football fans all teetering on the edge of anticipation then it may be best to avoid Rome until the start of June.

Although no trouble is anticipated, travelling football fans do tend to get quite boisterous, especially in the final 24 hours before the game kicks-off. So, there will be no quiet contemplation at the Trevi Fountain, or rest and relaxation in Rome’s piazzas during the run-up to the final, and unless you are willing to be part of that atmosphere, steer clear of Rome until the football circus departs!
