Presidential Election Upset Occurs Exactly Fifty Years After Merger of Two Football Leagues

It seems somehow fitting that the stunning upset in the Presidential Election happened just one day before the fiftieth anniversary of the official merger of the nation’s two professional football leagues. That historic legislation, signed by President Lyndon Bains Johnson on November 7, 1966, helped pave the way for one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports.

Considered an inferior organization, the AFL began in the mid sixties to gain popularity with football fans. That fact was made clear when the NBC television network interrupted a November 1968 New York Jets and Oakland Raiders game to show the film Heidi, only to be hounded afterward by protests from fans around the country.

It was those very Jets who just two months later managed to pull off an upset similar to the one Donald Trump enjoyed in this recent Presidential Election. In the third Super Bowl New York had to face the Baltimore Colts who, like Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016, were heavily favored to win.

In spite of the fact that the Jets were eighteen point underdogs, quarterback Joe Namath publicly declared that New York would win the game. Donald Trump would make a similar promise about the Presidential Election fifty years later, and history has recorded that both men succeeded.

Namath and the Jets beat the Colts 16-7 to win the Super Bowl, the first ever by an AFL team. The Green Bay Packers of the NFL had dominated the previous Super Bowls, out scoring their opponents in Kansas City and Oakland by a margin of 68-24.

In Joe Namath-like fashion last week, Donald Trump led the Republican Party to an upset victory over Clinton and the Democrats. Almost every election poll had predicted a big win for Clinton, as did every major newspaper and TV network. It promised to be so one-sided that some stations might have even interrupted the coverage to show a film not unlike the infamous decision to show Heidi over the Jets-Raiders matchup.

Fortunately, every station stuck with the election, which proved to be much closer than predicted. The surprise result will obviously have a much larger impact on America than did the Jets victory all those years ago, but that upset on the gridiron proved to be a great benefit to the NFL and the millions of football fans in the country.

A year after that Jets victory the leagues merged into one, which has since then been experiencing incredible financial and social growth for the last fifty years. Perhaps the recent Presidential upset can bring about a similar effect, maybe in the form of a peaceful merger between the two rival political parties to help bridge the antagonistic divisions among the American people.

A Profile of Carles Puyol

As a defender Carles Puyol remains somewhat in the shadow of players such as Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o or Lionel Messi, but with his energy, stamina and focus, he remains a favourite in the Nou Camp and is an essential member of the current line-up. Considered to be one of the best defenders in the world, Carles Puyol is also the first Catalan captain to have held the Champions League Cup aloft after the team defeated Arsenal in May 2006, the competition in which he was awarded Defender of the Year.

As team captain since the 2003-2004 season after Phillip Cocu left Barcelona for PSV Eindhoven, Puyol’s stocky build with legs built like tree trunks and a trademark head of curly locks all belie his speed and agility on the pitch and once he removes his shirt he reveals a ripped torso that is the product of many hours of hard training, impressively fee of any sign of body fat.

In fact Puyol’s dedication is such that he objects to being left out of a single match selection, even if it is for a rest period when the team is playing a number of matches is a short space of time and he has been noted to attend training sessions where he was specifically given a rest day.

Born in La Pobla de Segur, which is located in the interior of Catalonia, on April 13 1978, as a boy Carles Puyol played for the local side. He was signed for the FC Barcelona B team in 1996 at the age of 17 and made is first team debut in 1999 under Louis Van Gaal, when visiting Barcelona beat Valladolid 2-0.

Currently playing in the centre-back position, Puyol first played for Barcelona in the right back position when he was promoted from the B team. His original position as a boy was in goal, but when shoulder injuries prevented him from continuing he began to play as a striker, perhaps contributing to his attacking mentality today – you can only imagine what he would have been like as a goalkeeper given his absolute determination to stop the ball as a defender, but what is sure is that he would have played hard, perhaps contributing to his injuries.

Although he plays in the Spanish selection, which he has also captained on occasion, Carles Puyol is a Barcelona diehard through and through and it is difficult to imagine him playing for any other club when his contract expires in 2010, whatever offer was on the table. While Messi has been brought up at Barcelona – and there is no doubt about his current dedication to the club – it remains to be seen whether he could be lured away, but players such as Ronaldinho and Eto’o, whatever their brilliance, can only ever be considered hired hands.

Better Digital Photography – Taking Pictures Or Creating Pictures

When you have got a digital camera it is very cheap to take pictures. In fact it costs you nearly nothing. That’s good because you can take hundreds of pictures without worrying for the costs, and just keep a few of them.

When we take pictures we try to make the best out of the situation. We see friends in a nice or interesting situation and we snap some pictures. We visit different places and we take pictures of what we find interesting or fun, and we take pictures to have something we can show our family and friends when we come back from the visit. Nowadays more and more take pictures to put them online to make them visible to the whole world or at least to their selected friends and their family.

On vacation the pictures will be a sum of our memories to keep for decades to make the vacation even more valuable for us. You meet new people and conserve the memories on the digital files.

Some people develop a keen eye in seeing the opportunity for a picture and become good photographers by catching that special moment that will be a true pearl of their collection of photography. This is a very good talent and some of the most celebrated photographers in the world have had that ability to catch the special moment, in some cases to catch an action in a split-second of time.

On the other hand some of the best pictures aren’t just been snapped, they have been created by the photographer. Here are some ideas for creating your own super-shots.

Put things together to create a picture

Let’s say that you are having a wonderful meal and want to take a picture of the meal. The food is delicious, the decoration at the table looks terrific and you are together with a nice person. In such a situation you will often get the most interesting picture by taking the picture vertical. Organise some food in the foreground, make sure that a limited part of the table decoration is in sight and place your nice company in the picture. To make all this happen you just need a few minutes to take a look of the possibilities at the table and to make sure everything is in your frame of your picture. If you have to use the flash of the camera you might get the trouble that the foreground becomes very light and your nice person behind becomes too dark. With a white tablecloth this problem might even be exaggerated. To avoid the problem reduce the distance between the foreground and the person behind.

Include a colourful foreground when taking a picture of a place

Just one single colour added the right place in a picture might make it much more outstanding. Are you taking pictures in a garden there might be many colourful flowers. But without having one of the flowers in the foreground the picture might look very banal. You might have the option to move a pot or jar with a colourful flower in front to include it in the picture. Don’t place this flower in the centre of the picture frame but arrange it to the left in such a way that it is around 1/3 in the picture from the left. That will often add substantial appeal to the final picture. Many artefacts can be used with a similar effect in other situations.

Let people do something

When you take pictures of friends and family let them do something. When people are active the picture will be more interesting to see. Many pictures of friends show the friends shouting hallo or drinking or showing faces. That isn’t what I mean with letting people do something. No, let people do something more unique to each person. Let them do something related to their work or hobby or other special interest. A trick could be to let them dress themselves in a special way, With a little practise you might be able to create really outstanding and interesting pictures, you will be happy with yourself and improve your esteem as a photographer among your friends.

These small tricks are useful whatever kind of apparatus you are taking picture with. Are you taking your pictures with a mobile phone you will still be able to improve your pictures by making use of the above photo tips. As you start giving your picture taking more attention you will see the potential of starting creating pictures and not just taking pictures.

Kickers Are Weird

I was a sports broadcaster for 35 years, mostly covering the National Football League. I learned a lot of things in that time, but one thing stands out, and I’m going to share it with you now:

Kickers are weird

Go back and read it again, several times.

I put it in big type for a reason. It’s true! And you have to understand it. Kickers are very, very weird people.

Whole generations of NFL fans have grown up not knowing what a «straight-on» kicker looks like. Well, a straight-on kicker didn’t angle into the ball like today’s soccer-style kickers. He ran straight at the ball and kicked it straight toward the goalpost, wearing a shoe with a special hard, square toe in it. I know this is a foreign concept for some of you younger people, but bear with an old man for a moment.

The NFL record for field goal distance is still held by a straight-on kicker who actually had a deformed foot and had to wear a specially fitted shoe: Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints for sixty-three yards (since tied by Denver’s Jason Elam, for you stat freaks).

Another old-time NFL kicker, Ben Agajanian, also had a deformed foot and a special shoe. After his playing days, Ben became a respected teacher of the kicking arts. One of his pupils once asked Ben, «How can I get a kicking shoe like yours?»

«Well,» Ben said, «first you get a lawnmower…»

In the mid-1960s, the Gogolak brothers, Pete and Charley, came into the NFL, the first soccer-style kickers. And unlike the hulking, straight-on guys, they were smaller. And foreign. And they didn’t know much about football, American style. Stories abound of their running off the field after a successful kick shouting, «I keek touchdown!»

The last of the straight-ons, the Redskins’ Mark Moseley, retired in 1986. It’s been soccer style since then.

And kickers are weird in more than just the angle they take to the ball. They do strange things with their shoes. I was interviewing the Cowboys’ Chris Boniol back in the nineties, and he let it slip that he broke in his kicking shoes by soaking them in near-scalding water, while his foot was inside them. This, he said, made the leather conform to the shape of his foot. But that wasn’t the really weird part.

The really weird part is that Boniol wore a size nine street shoe. On the field, he wore a size seven!

«Wait a minute,» I said. «You take a size nine street shoe but you wear a size seven kicking shoe? How do you get your foot in there?»

«You just kind of wedge it in.»

«Doesn’t it hurt? Don’t your toes get all cramped?»

«Doesn’t matter,» Boniol said. He wanted it to feel like his shoe was just another part of his foot-one skin, so to speak. And since he was a co-holder of the record for most field goals in one game (seven-since broken), who was I to argue?

Weight Loss Supplements – Tools for Your Weight Loss Arsenal

I have said it before – weight loss is a matter of burning more calories than you consume. However, any time you can use a tool to make things easier – why wouldn’t you?

Weight loss supplements are a tool that can help you speed your metabolism, curb hunger, or even absorb some of your calories which come from fat or carbs.

Here is a brief introduction of some weight loss supplements in the different categories:

Thermogenics – Thermogenics are usually a stimulant which contains one or more of the following: Ma-Huang, Caffeine, Green tea, Synephrine, or Guarana. The goal of thermogenics is to accelerate fat burning past the point of diet alone as well as give you energy and decrease appetite. Thermogenics are not for everyone especially if you are sensitive to stimulants or have any type of medical condition. Always check with your doctor first.

Appetite suppressant – Hoodia is the name you will hear come up when you are talking about suppressing your appetite. It has been said that tribesman used hoodia gordonii before a long hunt in order to control their appetite. It is said that hoodia sends signals to the brain leading the brain to think that the body is full. If your weight loss efforts seem to be hindered by a massive appetite – Then perhaps hoodia is for you. Look for pure hoodia on the label.

Carb Blockers – Carb blockers reportedly prevent the body from absorbing some of the unwanted starches. The active ingredient is phaseolus vulgaris otherwise known as white kidney bean extract. I don’t think anyone believes that taking a carb blocker will give you free access to all the carbs you want to consume but may be of benefit to the occasional cheater.

Fat Blockers – The active ingredient in a fat blocker is Chitosan. Chitosan has the ability to bind fats and cholesterol before they are absorbed by the body. Taken right after a meal, fat blockers will absorb some of the fat from your diet and allow it to pass through. Some reports indicate that Chitosan can absorb 7 times its weight in fat.

Chitosan is a fiber derived from the shells of shellfish such as shrimp.

Choose your weight loss supplements wisely. Purchase a well known brand from a reputable dealer and expand your weight loss tools arsenal.
