"Three Gifts" Is Mary Flinn’s Third Gift of True Love to Her Readers

Who wants to read a book about happily married people? Well, if the author of the book is Mary Flinn, I do. It would be easy to dismiss «Three Gifts» as a romance novel, but it is more than that. Few romance novels tell the story of what happened after the wedding; we’ve all heard jokes about how once they were married, Prince Charming made Cinderella clean the castle and the fairy tale was over. But Mary Flinn isn’t afraid of depicting marriage, and she doesn’t write fairy tale romances. Her lovers may be a step above in how they treat one another, but they serve as a beautiful example of what marriage can be if people truly care for one another and do not let the world and other people, or petty jealousies and fears, interfere with their most important relationship.

The two main characters, Chelsea and Kyle, were first introduced to readers in Flinn’s novel «The One» as high school seniors who fell in love. High school romances don’t always last, and Kyle and Chelsea had their share of problems to overcome, but they succeeded so well that «Three Gifts,» third in the series, opens with them getting married. From that opening scene, readers are taken through the first year of Kyle and Chelsea’s married life as they dream about happiness, worry over finances, deal with family crises, and hope for children.

In these pages, there are marital worries, but there are also tender moments. There are ghosts from the past, such as Kyle’s father’s suicide that keeps rearing its ugly head, but there are also moments of healing connected to those sad memories. Beyond the excitement and romance, Kyle and Chelsea find themselves having to dig down deeper to find the love within them that will carry them through the most difficult times.

And for me, perhaps best of all, there are reappearances by a large supporting cast of characters-friends and loving family members-all of whom feel like my old friends from the previous two books «The One» and «Second Time’s a Charm.» The reader is swallowed up into the warmth of these loving people until he (yes, «he») feels like part of the family. Who says romance novels are only for women? Men would enjoy being part of this world, and male characters like Kyle and his best friend Glen, make a perfect entry point into it. After all, what man wouldn’t want a hot babe like Chelsea-especially when her hotness goes beyond her figure to her kindness, her inner strength, and her willingness to put her relationship before everything else? Kyle is a lucky man. What Flinn depicts is what marriage should be and I hope this book makes her readers aspire to such relationships. For me, the magic and wonder you feel when reading «Three Gifts» can be summed up in one sentence from Kyle’s thoughts, «Knowing he would never be alone again filled him with thankfulness.» We should all be as fortunate as Kyle and Chelsea, not only in their love for one another, but in how that love is supported by all those around them.

It is sad to think «Three Gifts» is the last book about these characters. Flinn has plans to write other books not related to this series, which I look forward to, but I hope one day she will allow us to reenter Kyle and Chelsea’s world again.

For those, who have ever attended more than one of these, you will probably agree, the experience, and impact, often varies significantly, and dramatically! The reality is, it's not only about having Open Houses, but how they are performed, and focused! With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, what this means, requires, and involves, and why it matters.

1. Marketing, promoting: If they don't come, it doesn't matter, regardless of how the rest of the process, is performed! How will you attract the maximum number of qualified, potential, home buyers, unless / until, you carefully examine and consider, your options and alternatives, and your niche market, for the particular property? Where, and how will you promote, and market the Open House? Some methods, to be used, include: a) personally, calling as many local real estate offices, as possible, as well as sending the office, an informative, inspiring fact – sheet / information, to differentiate your listing, from the rest – of – the – pack; b) at least for the first weekend, use a local paper, with wide, relevant distribution, and good potential for results; c) extensive Internet marketing and promotion (free and paid); d) Social Media marketing (targeted); quality signs. etc. The first weekend, you should consider, having an Open House, both on Saturday and Sunday. A good schedule is having one, each weekend, for the next 3 weeks, if the house, is still, on the market / available, and then, one, every other weekend, until it's sold!

2. Curb Appeal: What will be the first impression, when potential buyers, approach the house? Make sure the house, is neat, clean, clutter – free, etc.

3. First look inside: What will be the first impression, when a potential buyer, enters the house? Is the home, free of distractions, odors, etc? Would this particular home, benefit from staging?

4. Agent's conduct: How does an agent's conduct himself, at the event? Is he welcoming, receptive, enlightening, and ready, to answer any questions, and address concerns? How might a quality real estate agent, balance, giving a potential buyer, space, and being proactive? Beware of a distracted agent, who is there, in body, but not in effectiveness, etc!

The success, and value of any Open House, depends on a combination, of attracting a significant number of potential, qualified buyers, and addressing, how to best, show the house, to its best advantage. Who a homeowner hires, to represent him, really does matter!

Your Scrapbooking Arsenal

This article explores some of the basic tools you need in your scrapbooking arsenal. Whether you’re new to scrapbooking or a scrapbooking guru, you need to have the basics in place when starting any scrapbooking project. As with any project, without the proper tools you’re cutting yourself short and limiting your ability to properly express your creativity.

The first tool in your scrapbook quiver is, of course, the album. That’s the «book» part of «scrapbook» and serves as the foundation of your project. You’ll want to consider the size of elements to be included in your scrapbook. Are you including photographs, newspaper clippings, full size 8.5″x11″ sheets of paper? Plan accordingly by using an album that will fit your needs. 8.5×11 and 12×12 are common sizes.

Just as your album is the foundation of your scrapbook, the foundation of each page is the cardstock. Usually you will want to use white or off white colors, but depending on your style and the content of your scrapbook, you can experiment with bolder or more vibrant colors. For a book about your baby growing up, you might want to use softer pinks or light blues, for example.

Because your memories are important, you want them to last a long time. Page protectors that fit the pages of your album will help keep the oils from your fingers from directly contacting the pages and keep everything protected for years to come. Additionally, if something ever falls off of one of your pages, it will be contained within the page protector for easy recovery and quick fixes.

It seems basic, but the next thing you need is a variety of papers. Make sure the paper you use is acid free. Beyond that, let your imagination run wild. The more colors you have, the better! For background elements, you will want subtle colors that make your elements stand out. For foreground elements, you will want bright colors that do the standing out. Don’t forget to also pick up some vellum – it will add depth to your pages and give you another element in your creative quiver.

Let’s talk adhesives. You’ll need something to stick your elements to the pages of your scrapbook. Whether it be tape, glue, or something else, make sure it is acid free and non-toxic. This is based mostly on personal preference. You may like using glue sticks while someone else might prefer tape or liquid glues. There are specialty products available such as glue dots (such as Hermafix Dots or Memory Book Glue Dots) that provide a super easy way to attach elements to a page and are designed especially for scrapbooking.

Experiment with the various options to find the one that work best for you and your style of scrapbooking.

A variety of pens, colored pencils, and markers are also essential. Prismacolor makes great markers. They are a bit more expensive, but they last a long time and produce the greatest quality. Again, experiment with different writing instruments to find what works best for you, your style, and the content of your scrapbooks.

Unless you have a table you enjoy cutting into, you will need a cutting mat (we’ll get to cutting tools in a minute). Look for a «self-healing» type as these will tend to last longer than the most basic mats. Not only will these protect your table or counter top, but most mat provide built in rulers and other references to help make cutting easy.

With everything in place, it’s time to start cutting. Cutting tools are an arsenal in and of themselves. Scissors might seem like the most basic tool, but there are considerations to be made as far as quality and comfort goes. Try out the different scissors at the craft store. Usually, the nicer the scissors, the easier they will cut and the longer they will last. Fiskars is a great brand that many scrapbookers swear by. You will also want an Exacto knife for intricate cuts and working with dies.

Speaking of dies, that is our last stop and the last piece of our toolset. Dies allow you to cut specific shapes out of paper, vellum, or whatever else very quickly and easily. There are a variety of types from small handheld single-shaped dies to larger electronic die cutters that can do an endless amount of shapes. Explore your local craft store for options.

One of the favorite die cut machines among scrapbookers is the Cricut Expression. Not only can it cut a huge variety of shapes for your scrapbooks, but it can also cut vinyl lettering for a huge variety of projects not just limited to scrapbooking. It even does glass etching. Some of the other electronic die cut machines do a good job as well, but most require being hooked up to a computer adding to their complexity. The Cricut is easy enough for a child to use, but versatile enough for a creative scrapbooker!

A Starr on the Walk of Fame

Monday February 8th 2010 saw former Beatles drummer, Ringo Starr, earn his place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where he joins 2,400 other famous names.

Born in Dingle, Liverpool on the 7th July 1940, as Richard Starkey, Ringo was the last (and oldest) member to join the world-famous pop group, after George Martin ousted original drummer, Pete Best. Prior to his big break, he played with Rory and The Hurricanes; a popular band in the clubs of Liverpool and Hamburg, who unfortunately never managed a successful recording career. After joining The Beatles in 1962, Starr’s life was never going to be the same again. The Beatles went on to become the second biggest recording artists, only one step behind Elvis Presley.

Despite the unprecedented success of the band and the ensuing ‘Beatlemania’, the band were troubled by personality clashes – these clashes and constant disagreements eventually led to the band calling it a day in 1970. Because Ringo had always kept a degree of detachment from the hype and ego of being in the world’s biggest band and a distance from the arguments, he managed to maintain strong relationships with the other 3 – he was the first to comfort Yoko after Lennon’s murder in 1980.

Surviving alcoholism and becoming sober after a stint in a clinic in Arizona, Ringo continued to work as both an actor and musician, gaining success in both fields. He worked on solo recordings with each of his ex-Beatle friends and even hosted TV shows. His voice became synonymous with children’s television, when he narrated the much loved Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends.

At 69 years of age, Ringo is still an active musician, touring and delighting audiences with his group – Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band will be touring America from June this year.

For a chance to own a limited edition print of Ringo and his Beatle band-mates, from a collection of photographs taken by an acclaimed photographer and BAFTA award winning cinematographer, visit The Beatles Hidden Gallery online and register your interest now.
