Premier League Match Time: Chelsea Vs Blackburn

Premier League match time arrives at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea host Blackburn, in match week 23, on January 15.

This is the second meeting between the teams, this season; the first leg was hosted by Blackburn on October 30 and went 2-1 in the champions’ favour. The score-line doesn’t give a true indication of Rovers’ excellent showing on the day. Emerton and Miame Diouf gave great support to Benjani a stand out performer who put the home side ahead on 21 minutes. It can justly be said that Blackburn took the game to Chelsea, but in the end it was a tale of missed opportunities for Sam Allardyce’s squad, with Pederson wayward with his free-kicks.

Under the cosh in the first half, Chelsea made a better fist of it in the second, with Ivanovic, Zhirkov and Cole all standing up to be counted on a day Terry and Drogba looked off-colour.

Head to head, Chelsea have established a 12-2 lead over Blackburn in 20 league games played between the sides over the last decade.

Chelsea, who led the points table up to match week 15, appear to have come apart at the seams, in their last 10 games, winning just 2, while losing 4 and drawing the remainder. Those 4 defeats include a shock 1-0 loss at Molineux to Wolves in match week 22.

Blackburn have given a better account of themselves, by winning 4 while losing 5 and drawing 1 of their last 10 league games. They won their last game, at home against Liverpool, by a 3-1 margin.

Currently placed 5th in the table, Chelsea have won 7 of 10 games hosted by them while drawing 2, and losing just the one. Blackburn, in ninth place, have won just 3 of 11 games on the road, while losing 7 and drawing the remaining.

Though their current form appears impressive, Blackburn will find the going tough playing the champions away at Stamford Bridge. Ancelotti’s men will have a point or two to prove as they strive to catch up with Manchester United who have been moving farther adrift with every succeeding game. More importantly, Chelsea will try to prove their naysayers wrong, as the champions appear to have been written off as title contenders this season, by all but their most fanatic supporters.

Chelsea had the following men in their starting eleven against Wolves in match week 22: Cech, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Essien, Lampard, Kalou, Drogba and Malouda. Kakuta, Sturridge and Anelka were used as substitutes.

Blackburn’s starting eleven against Liverpool in match week 22 comprised Bunn, Salgado, Samba, Nelsen, Givet, Hoillett, Dunn, Pederson, Olsson, Diouf, Mwaruwari. Goulon, Morris and Diouf were he substitutes who played in the game.

Famous Quotes by Vince Lombardi During Football’s Annual Bowl Season

College football’s annual bowl season is full of surprises and spectacular moments. Famous coaches have had some memorable remarks about American’s most popular sport, and here are some of them by legendary Green Bay Packer coach Vince Lombardi, who many consider to be the best of the best.

Lombardi’s head coaching record in the National Football League was second to none. In 9 years with the Green Bay Packers, Lombardi’s regular season won-loss percentage was 73% (96-34-6), his postseason was 90% (9-1) and his total was 75% (105-35-6).

He took a 1-10-1 team in 1958 to an NFL title in 3 years, and went on to win 5 NFL titles in 9 years (1961, 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1967) and three titles consecutively. He led the Packers to the first two Super Bowl titles in 1966 and 1967.

Lombardi’s discipline was legendary. A lifelong Catholic, he spent 4 years in Cathedral Preparatory Seminary to become a Catholic priest before becoming a standout football player at St. Francis Preparatory High School.

An undersized guard at 5 foot 8 and 185 pounds, he was offered and accepted a football scholarship to Fordham University in the Bronx to play for «Sleepy» Jim Crowley, one of the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame in the 1920s. He would become part of the «Seven Blocks of Granite» that held Fordham’s opponents scoreless several times during a 25-game winning streak.

After coaching at Fordham, Lombardi became the offensive line coach for West Point under another legendary head coach, Colonel Red Blaik. Lombardi then became the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, working with defensive coordinator Tom Landry and head coach Jim Lee Howell, before becoming Green Bay’s head coach in 1959.

Lombardi was 59 years old when he died of cancer in 1970. Grown men and Hall of Fame football players openly wept at his funeral.

Here are some of Vince Lombardi’s best known quotes:

«If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?»

«I firmly believe than any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious.»

«There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay and I never want to finish second again.»

«Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.»

«Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.»

«The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.»

«Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser.»

«Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.»

«If you can accept losing, you can’t win.»

«Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.»

«Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.»

«Success demands singleness of purpose.»

«It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.»

«It’s easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you’re a winner, when you’re number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you’re not a winner.»

«The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.»

«We didn’t lose the game; we just ran out of time.»

«Teamwork is what the Green Bay Packers are all about. They didn’t do it for individual glory. They did it because they loved one another.»

«The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.»

«Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate.»

Here are some quotes by Lombardi’s players:

«When Lombardi said ‘sit down,’ we didn’t look for a chair.» – Forrest Gregg, Hall of Fame tackle.

«He prepared us so well, and he motivated us so well, I felt he was a part of me on the field.» Fuzzy Thurston.

«He pushed you to the end of your endurance and then beyond it. And if there was reserve there, well, he found that too.» Henry Jordan, Hall of Fame defensive tackle.

«He made us better than we thought we could be.» Jerry Kramer.

«Coach Lombardi showed me that by working hard and using my mind, I could overcome my weakness to the point that I could be one of the best.» Bart Starr, Hall of Fame quarterback.

«The fear in my mind was not him but that for some reason I would not be a part of the team and be with this man.» Forrest Gregg.

«He made you a believer. He told you what the other team was going to do, and he told you what you had to do to beat them, and invariably he was right.» Willie Davis, Hall of Fame defensive back.

(Editor’s Note: I have read and studied one of the best biographies on Lombardi: When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss, I highly recommend his book as a great read.)

Vacation Destinations in England

At times it seems that the United Kingdom, and especially England, is just one large vacation destination due, mainly, to the fact that wherever you find yourself you are never too far from a first class tourist attraction, area of outstanding natural beauty, an outstanding museum or art gallery or a city crammed full of amenities suitable for all manner of vacations or city breaks.

Most people who visit England on a vacation tend to choose the capital city, London, as their destination. While this makes total sense if you are only likely to visit the country once or twice there are plenty of other great places to visit and spend a few days or weeks. London has some of the most instantly recognisable visitor attractions in the world and the most famous are usually associated with the British Royal Family, for example Buckingham Palace. Being the capital city it is also home to some of the country’s finest museums and art galleries however equal museums and art galleries are found across the country such as the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

Cities such as Liverpool are fast becoming popular destinations for visitors looking for something a little bit different to their usual seaside vacation. While the city has plenty of visitor attractions associated with the world famous sons of the city, the Beatles, you do not have to look too far before you find something of outstanding quality. The Albert Dock complex is well worth a visit and it is where you will find the Tate Gallery and the Maritime Museum. Recently the European Capital of Culture the city has plenty to keep visitors entertained and few places offer such a lively and entertaining nightlife.

If you are looking for a seaside vacation England has plenty of excellent seaside resorts with the most popular being Blackpool, Brighton and Newquay. Blackpool and Brighton both have a long association with tourism and while Brighton benefits from a large youth and student population to boost its nightlife Blackpool is more popular for such things as stag and hen parties. Newquay is a popular family seaside destination but it is also one of the best places to either go surfing or to learn to surf. Miles and miles of gorgeous Cornish beaches provide some of the finest surfing opportunities in the United Kingdom.

One of the great things about taking a vacation in England is that wherever you choose to stay you will find an England hotel, guest house or B&B to match your budget. If you want to stay somewhere cheap and cheerful there are plenty of two and three star establishments offering budget accommodation but it is often worth looking for a last minute booking discount as it is sometimes possible to pick up a room, say in London, for as little as £15 for the night.

Landlords, Do You Know the Importance of Keeping Your Property Safe?

With the winter season well underway, domestic gas and electricity usage is on the up – and it’s your job to ensure that your property and tenants are as safe as possible by checking all the electrical and gas appliances in use.

Hiring a fully qualified, registered professional to tackle any gas and electrical jobs, whether large or small, is of the utmost importance.

A good lettings agent should be able to organise electrical tests and gas safety checks for you, whether in house or by recommending trusted contractors.

Electricity

You’re legally obliged to ensure that all electrical items and household appliances supplied as part of your property letting are safe. Look out for:

  • Badly frayed or damaged insulation
  • Old or exposed wire
  • Poorly fitted or cracked plugs
  • Scorch-marked or damaged sockets
  • Plugs without sleeved, insulated pins

Be sure to repair or replace any equipment or appliances that are past their best with new equipment that meets current BS and EC standards.

If you have a property requiring a house of Multiple Occupation License from the Local Authority, by law you will need to provide confirmation of electrical safety. But it will give you and your tenants real peace of mind if you arrange for on-going checks anyway. A qualified electrical engineer should test every appliance and help you to keep a log of:

  • Item make and serial number
  • Item condition
  • Dates of Portable Appliance (PAT) test

Remember, some insurance companies won’t pay out if untested electrical items cause damage.

Gas

Any gas appliances and systems can pose a great risk if they are not fitted and maintained properly.

As a landlord, you are legally obliged to comply with the Gas Safety Regulations 1994 for any equipment that uses mains or liquid gas in your rented property.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a real danger that can cause severe illness and even death. Carbon Monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas, so you and your tenants may not even be aware of its presence until it’s too late.

And any kind of gas leak can have catastrophic consequences, from gas poisoning to risk of fire.

A fully qualified GasSafe engineer should carry out an annual full check at any properties that you rent out.

It is important to be aware that a standard annual service offered by many tradespeople does not comply with the legal regulations for landlords and may leave your tenants and property at risk – so be sure that your engineer is GasSafe registered.

To comply with the regulations you must:

  • Hire a GasSafe registered engineer who is qualified to work on the particular appliances and systems in your property
  • Ensure a full gas safety check is completed both prior to a let and every year thereafter
  • Ensure all gas fittings and flues are maintained safely at all times
  • Repair or replace any defective gas appliances or pipework as soon as possible, ensuring any damaged items are not used until made safe
  • When all checks have been completed, you must:
  • Give a copy of the gas safety check certificate to your tenants

Florida is Unbeatable

Florida is no doubt the best team in this National title game. I argue that Oklahoma doesn’t even deserve a shot at the title because of a lack luster performance against Texas. Either way you slice this one up. Florida is the superior team and Tim Tebow who may not be the best «NFL style quarterback». But is most certainly the best quarterback in this game.

Not to mention the rest of the gators outmatch the Sooners in every category other than passing. This years National title game will not be a disappointment…to folks who reside around Gainesville. The Okies will be singing a familiar story of yet another lost opportunity for great glory and the Gators will be yet again champions.

I argue further that the SEC is simply a cut above the rest. The teams like Ohio state and Oklahoma that are getting matched up with the Florida’s and LSU’s of the generation have virtually no chance. Playing against teams that are rougher, tougher and all around just more talented. I think it is a major failure on the part of the BCS to create such match ups. One day a playoff system will be in place and the best teams will truly get an opportunity to shine in that light that only big name schools with a reputation have had lately. Either way this year there was and is no denying who the true champion will be this year.

And yes, yet again the best team in the nation resides in the best conference. The SEC!

How to Impress Any Soccer Scout

I see people ask questions like; '' What does a soccer scout look for in a player? '' So through this tutorial I'll show you what top club scouts like Manchester United, and Chelsea scouts look for. I hope this helps you out!

Step 1: You need TECHNIQUE, meaning you need a good first touch and great control. Most of the scouts don't look for fancy work. They want you to be able to receive the ball, and pass it with out losing it! Fancy tricks are great but they usually slow down the game.

Step 2: PACE is the next thing you need. The scouts are looking for a burst of speed that will beat a player, or change a game in an instant.

Step 3: MOVEMENT !! Yes the scouts notice you without the ball to. They're looking for players who, when they have passed the ball, move quickly to get it back or can find space!

Step 4: A lot of scouts look for TEMPERAMENT too. They usually don't see this until your actually on their team. Temperature, meaning you can handle conditions like 95 degree weather or wet muddy weather. So if it's a hot summer day you should try practicing or running in the condition.

To get noticed your going to have to train constantly and make sure you have heart. Make sure you look like you want to win. Win every 50/50 ball in the air. Slide tackle do whatever it takes to stand out.

Your also going to need to get on a good club team. Make sure your the one standing out. If you are having trouble with your technique and touch then you should try soccer freestyle. It helps almost everything in your soccer game. Why do you think Ronaldinho is so good?

Soccer Fixture: Chelsea Versus Arsenal

Chelsea and Arsenal met in the First Division of the Football League at Stamford Bridge for the first time on the 9th November, 1907 – 30 years after the stadium had first been opened for use by the London Athletic Club. Chelsea won 2.1 with both goals scored by George Hilsdon. Arsenal's reply came from Charlie Satterthwaite.

George Hilsdon was the first player to score 100 goals for Chelsea and a weather vane modeled on him can still be seen at Stamford Bridge. Legend has it that Chelsea will suffer 'great misfortune' if it is ever removed, as it was during ground works in the late 1970's when Chelsea were in financial and football decline. Hilsdon was the victim of a gas attack on the Western Front in WWI and never played professional football again, dying in 1941. His grave is unmarked.

This first match was watched by a then record crowd for England's top division: 65,000. Arsenal were still known as and based at Woolwich Arsenal at the time but they had a huge away following for this match due to it also being the 66th birthday of King Edward VII. The munitions factory – where many of the workers who followed the club were based – was closed for the day, hence they were free to travel to West London.

In fact, Arsenal could have been more local rivals of Chelsea than Tottenham Hotspur. A local businessman – Henry Norris – had a significant role in the development of both clubs. Amassing a fortune from property Norris became a Director and then Chairman of Fulham. Another Edwardian businessman called Henry – Henry Augustus Mears – had acquired Stamford Bridge with a view to it becoming one of the finest venues for association football in the capital if not the whole country. He offered Norris the chance to move Fulham FC to the ground but Norris refused to pay the annual rent of some £ 1500 and so Mears created his own team – Chelsea FC – in 1905. Had Norris not been so careful with his money, there might not have been a Chelsea football club at all.

Five years later Norris, still Chairman of Fulham became a majority shareholder of Woolwich Arsenal which had gone into voluntary liquidation. Becoming Chairman of that London club too, Norris proposed merging them with Fulham to form a super-club. The move was blocked by the Football League and so Chelsea and Fulham remained local rivals rather than Chelsea and Arsenal.

This match between the two teams in 1907 was the first ever to be played by two London clubs in the First Division and so the first major 'London derby.' All subsequent league meetings between the two sides to date have been in the top tier of English football (the old First Division and now the Premier League).

Woolwich Arsenal got their revenge the following season with a 2.1 win on 28th November, 1908 – Chelsea's goal coming from George Hilsdon again. The Gunners won on Chelsea turf in the season after that as well, before the first draw – 1.1 – in this league fixture on 15th February, 1913. This was the last time the two sides met before Woolwich Arsenal moved to Highbury and changed their name to Arsenal.

Indeed, after that win in their first meeting, Chelsea did not win the fixture again until 13th December, 1919 when they won 3.1 with goals from Robert McNeil, John Cock and Henry Ford in front of a huge post-war crowd of 60,000.

The fixture on 12th October, 1935 was played in front of another enormous crowd: 82,905, which was the second highest recorded attendance for an English league match. It finished in a 1.1 draw. Joseph Bambrick scored for Chelsea and Jack Crayston for Arsenal.

Arsenal's record league win at Stamford Bridge came in front of 74,667 football fans on 29th November, 1930 – a 5.1 victory, with David Jack scoring a hat-trick as Arsenal moved closer to their first League Championship win and domination of English football in the 1930s . They scored five times again on 24th November, 1934 – in a 5.2 victory this time – with legendary Arsenal center-forward Ted Drake scoring four of Arsenal's goals. Drake would go on to manage Chelsea in 1952 and was largely responsible for changing their nickname from The Pensioners to The Blues .

The Gunners also scored five goals in a 5.3 win on 29th October, 2011 with Robin Van Persie scoring a hat-trick for the victors.

Chelsea's largest win in the fixture came in a 6.0 win in the Premier League on 22nd March, 2014 which was also Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger's 1000th game in charge. This is the highest number of goals Chelsea have scored against Arsenal in a league fixture at Stamford Bridge and also represented the biggest margin of victory by The Blues. Oscar scored two goals that day alongside one each from Samuel Eto'o, Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah in front of an attendance of 41,614.

The sides are neck and neck in terms of wins in this fixture. In the years when Chelsea have gone on to win the League Title they have never lost at home to their rivals from North London, drawing the matches in the 1954/55 and 2004/05 seasons and winning each of them in 2005/06, 2009 / 10 and 2014/15.

For Arsenal, in the 13 seasons where they have finished as League Champions, they have only lost at Chelsea on two occasions (Chelsea were in the Second Division in the 1988/89 season so there was no fixture) – on 29th August, 1970 when Paddy Mulligan and John Hollins scored for Chelsea and Eddie Kelly got one back for Arsenal – and on 2nd February, 1991. Kerry Dixon and Graham Stuart scored for Chelsea that day with Alan Smith replying for Arsenal in front of a crowd of 29,094. This was the only league defeat of the season for George Graham's Arsenal team and their first in 27 First Division matches, stretching back to a 2.0 loss at Luton Town on 21st April, 1990.
