Married Life: American and Japanese (Watch Your Language)

Good communication is an invaluable tool found in every successful leader's arsenal of capabilities. It is also a corner-stone in every successful marriage. As a couple grows with each other both physically and emotionally, so does their ability to communicate their needs and their ability to create real conflict resolution.

The trouble arises when you and your spouse don't fully understand one another. This may seem odd to some and I can imagine that others are entirely perplexed. How and why would you marry someone you can't speak to? Although I'm sure that does happen, what I mean is that many foreigners are capable of speaking English well but are often confused by slang or very casual English.

Due to the fact that the English language is a living and breathing thing, so to speak, it evolves and transforms with every new generation. It is difficult enough for native English speakers to follow the new slang and terms, it seems a little unfair to ask someone who is learning to also retain the slang and text short cuts such as lol, tbh, btw, FYI, idk, etc. ..

Practice Patience! Sometimes you are going to have to spell it out or rephrase your sentence. At the beginning of my marriage my husband and I would have arguments over some very simple communication errors.

I will offer two short phrases Americans use often but we don't really think about the weight of their perceived meaning.

"I don't care" When Americans use this phrase in a passive tone it is to vocalize a general indifference or it used as another way to say "I don't mind" "you can do that".

Unfortunately to foreigners (particularly those coming from less casual cultures such as Japan) this phrase seems to be suggesting that the American does not care about something they deem to be important and is therefore being rude.

I am mentioning this particular phrase because is sparked a three year fight between my mother and my husband. The Japanese have many demons and stories based around grudges because I personally believe the Japanese can hold grudges like no one else.

A similar phrase "That doesn't matter" or any variation in American culture is often used as a way to comfort someone who is upset over something that may seem insignificant to most. For example if someone is upset over a low test score their friends may try to help by saying one test doesn't really matter. This is akin to "don't sweat the small stuff", "no use crying over spilt milk" or "what done is done" … etc …

Again to some foreigners may take these phases as more of an insult than an attempt to console them. Many Japanese men (in particular) tend to over analyze what Americans would consider to be minor problems. They frequently worry over all the small details of life and can be put on the defense if they feel someone close to them (their partner) is belittling their concerns.

What should you do if you and your partner are already arguing?

I have found that asking my husband a series of questions as calmly as I can often helps me figure out where the misunderstanding is deriving from. Most often either he or I simply misunderstood the meaning. Other times we realize we have yet another cultural barrier to over come.

Liverpool’s Preparation – Next Season

I think you all who are a Liverpool’s fan already know that Liverpool has a serious problem about their scorer. Almost in every game they had really good system and position, everything in the match always great except the striker.

Although, Dirk Kuyt ,Peter Crouch , Craig Bellamy or even Robbie Fowler had paticipated the game very well but they always loss the chance to score. When the goal was not coming, the pressure normally came to the player. The pressure will effected to decision of the player. The result is the play produce more mistakes and their rival use this mistake as opportunities to bring Liverpool down. No matter how strong Liverpool defender could be, it is not important if they can not score.

Liverpool will always have victory if they have the first goal. In other word, they always defeated when they loss the first goal to the rival. Eventhough, Rafael Benitez has incredible brain to solve any problem in every situation but the key is the players not the manager. I had been waited Liverpool to buy new striker so long time but he still not come for now.

However, I think Liverpool has fitting red engine in the middle area on the squad. Steven Gerrard and Xavi Alonso are do well in their position. Furthermoe, Javier Mascherano coming is a appropriate combination. During the close of this season I hope Liverpool will approach another striker to improve their weakness.

Now I prefer English Premier League more than UEFA Champion League.

The Case Against Using An Autoresponder

I've had to put on my best armor today.

Why? Because I'm no doubt gonna get one hell of a backlash from certain people. After all, email marketers are supposed to love autoresponders.

Aren't they?

Well, hold your horses. Because I'm here to tell you why you should be sending daily emails (as daily broadcasts) as opposed to relying on an autoresponder sequence.

Ready? Let's get straight into it …

1) You can't be "current" with an autoresponder

One of the best things about daily email, is that you get to talk about current events.

And when you talk to your prospects about current things that are happening in the world, they're gonna pay attention.

Want an example? Okay then. When Leicester won the Premier League, it gave me something current to talk about. And it turned out to be one of the most profitable emails I've written. I reckon this was just because people could relate to it, as it had only just happened.

TV series' and films also make for great email fodder. Again, clearly you have to be current when talking about these.

But if you relied on an autoresponder, you couldn't exactly be "current", could you …

2) You risk "losing" a lot of people because of one email

Look, even I write a poor email once in a while (I know, shock horror, right ?!).

But that doesn't matter. Because I can just make sales the next day with a better email. And that poor email would then be consigned to history.

But if that same email was in an autoresponder sequence, every single person who joined my list in the future would also receive it. Yes, I know you could take it out or change it. But that's making things harder than they need to be. Sending daily emails is just so less complicated.

3) Autoresponders don't tend to "pitch" in every single email

Look, I know you can easily make an autoresponder with a sales pitch in every email.

But the fact of the matter is, most autoresponders don't. Instead, they tend to tell a story that is told over the course of numerous emails, before then pitching a product / service.

Now, listen.

I'm sure this works.

There are certainly guys who do successfully use autoresponders. Andre Chaperon and John McIntyre spring to mind.

But I believe Ben Settle is the best email marketer in the world. And he does daily email. And, yes, he pitches every single day – without having to take anyone through a long-winded story sequence. Clearly, you're gonna make money faster doing it Ben's way. And I like fast. I'm sure you do, too.

Anyway, I'm not saying autoresponders are the devil.

Far from it.

In fact, they do have some advantages over daily broadcasts.

But you know what? For me personally, nothing has come even close to beating daily email when it comes to making sales.

And trust me, if you do it right, it'll be the same for you, too.
