Coaching Outside Linebackers

The hardest position on the field for most defenses is the Outside Linebacker. In a typical 8-man Front, such as the 3-5-3 or 4-2-5 defenses, these players have dual responsibilities.

Responsibility

The Outside Linebacker is primarily responsible for containing the run, forcing the ball carrier to turn back inside on edge runs. He can also force the ball carrier to bubble and work laterally to the sideline, allowing pursuit to get there to help.

The second responsibility for the OLB is to cover the flats on the pass. Typically, 8-man fronts are going to be running Cover 3 as the base coverage.

Most defensive coordinators use a mixture of Zone and Man coverages. The OLB will normally be locked on the #2 Receiver to his side in Cover 1 or Cover 0, a slot or Tight End. When a player is locked up in man coverage, he cannot be considered a part of the run defense.

Alignment

The Outside Linebacker’s alignment will depend on your defense and his abilities. Typically, he will be somewhere in the range of 3-5 yards outside of the End Man on the Line of Scrimmage (EMOLS) and 2-5 yards off the Line of Scrimmage (LOS).

If there is a #2 receiver, the OLB commonly uses an apex alignment, 5 yards off the ball and halfway between the EMOLS and the slot. Depending on the team and the ability of the slot, you may choose to align him closer to the slot to deter the pass or tighter to the EMOLS to help on the running game.

Keys and Reaction

The OLB’s primary key is the EMOLS, a Tackle or Tight End, for a High-Hat, Low Hat read. High Hat, meaning the OT’s helmet pops up as in a pass set, tells him the play is pass, and he should open up to the flats (but this will be dictated by coverage call). On a low hat read, when the OT fires out with a flat back, he is assuming run. The OLB should be thinking run unless he gets a definite high hat pass read.

You can help the OLB get his reads by studying the film of the EMOLS he will be reading. Different teams employ different techniques for pass and run blocking.

After getting a low hat read, the OLB checks his secondary key – the running back. He needs to attack the run appropriately by reading the run block and backfield action:

EMOLS hard down block inside, RB to you: Attack the line of scrimmage to replace where the EMOLS left. Expect a kick-out block from a RB or pulling guard. Take it on with your inside arm, keeping the outside arm and leg free and the shoulders square to the line. Constrict the running lane inside and be ready to make the tackle of the Ball Carrier bounces outside.

EMOLS drive blocks the Defensive End, RB to you: Shuffle up and in, but do not close all the way to the line of scrimmage. Maintain outside leverage until the RB declares inside, then fold in to make the tackle. If he bounces outside, box the play.

EMOLS Reaches to you, RB fast flow outside to you: Attack to the line of scrimmage but keep your width. If you have a #2 receiver, decide whether you can beat him to the point of attack or need to defeat his block. If you have to defeat his block, go through him, driving him back and work to his outside to contain the play.

EMOLS Zone or Reach away from you, Backfield flow away: Keep your depth, fold inside to stack the Defensive End. Check for Counter, Reverse, Bootleg action and be ready to work back. Do not pass the Defensive End until the ball declares away from you.

The Play Action Pass can put a lot of stress on your backers. If the OLB reads run, he should attack because he is a run first player. But once he realizes pass, usually by the secondary key action, he should bust it to get back out to his pass coverage area. Never give up on a play!

Coaching the Outside Linebackers

The individual techniques needed for the OLBs are similar to any defensive player. They need to be able to read their key and react, defeat a block, make a tackle, pass drop and cause turnovers. All of these skills should be worked in a collection of 5 Every Day Drills, if time allows. Add in other drills to work your weaknesses.

Group work is crucial to the Outside Linebacker understanding his role. He will work with the Safeties, Corners, Defensive Ends and Inside Linebackers. Set up group drills each week that allow him to see his role in the defense with each of these groups. Make sure the group drills are relevant to the opponent you will face that week.

Understand that Offensive Coordinators will be picking on your Outside Linebacker. They are the player who is most easily put in conflict. Offensive schemes will try to frustrate him, and get him guessing.

Your Outside Linebackers will make mistakes! Train them to trust their keys, play physical, and run to the football at all times to have the best OLB play possible.

Why Charmander Is a Cool Pokemon

Everyone in this world at some point has heard of Pokemon by now. And as a result people around the world have to come to have their own favorite Pokemon that they like a lot especially. Well in this article I am here to convince you why Charmander is a cool Pokemon and hopefully he will be able to enter one of your favorites by the end of this.

1. His Fire typing

One of Charmander’s strongest points is his cool and unique typing. Charmander is a fire lizard style Pokemon, which makes him have a very unique build and design surrounding him. He has a flame and fire rested on his tail that would give out and eliminate his life span immediately is the flame was drenched and extinguished by water of any kind, luckily such an important feature is durable for such a delicate Pokemon.

2. Variety of cool moves

Charmander and its lineage of evolution is known to be able to learn a variety of cool movies and techniques. Charmander can learn a variety of moves like Fire type attacks and even Dragon Type attacks as well. Some of its Dragon movies include moves like Dragon Rage in which it can usually learn in most generations or Dragon Claw usually as a TM by teaching it. These moves prove highly effective towards Dragon Types and other strong Pokemon. It can also learn stuff like fighting moves like Focus Punch and Brick Break and Rock Type attacks like Rock Tomb and Rock Slide as well. Ghost Moves like Shadow Claw are also in its arsenal and some more to mention are moves like Aerial Ace, Sunny Day, Dig, Rest, Iron Tail, Secret Power and so much more.

3. Cool evolution line

And last but not least Charmander’s evolution line is very cool and a major strong point of this Pokemon. At level 16 this little cool fire lizard Pokemon will evolve to an even bigger fire lizard with much more power and speed to pack it with. It gets even more cooler once it evolves at level 36 into its final form Charizard, in which is an even greater prize because it enables to be able to fly and learn flying moves thanks to its newfound wings. And if you have later generations from X and Y forward you can take advantage of evolving into its mega forms both X and Y version and have to opportunity to have an even stronger Charizard at your disposal.

And with that you have a solid explanation on why Charmander is such a cool Pokemon. If you haven’t already don’t hesitate to add this Pokemon to your arsenal and team since you can utilize him to your best of your ability at hand.

Giving Credit Where Music Credits Are Due

Selecting a favorite CD out of my music collection, I popped in the chosen disc and hit play. While the music cranked, I took the CD cover apart and looked closer at the contents of the case (also known as liner notes). Amongst the colorful artwork, band photos and track listings, were the lyrics for each song and of course, the credits for whoever had a hand in the creation of this CD.

Looking at an indie artist and band’s profiles online, more often than not, this simple information is not available and even if that artist did most of the work him or herself, credit information clears the air. Let’s take a closer look at music credits.

There once was a little band from Liverpool where songwriters John and Paul came to an agreement in their partnership to take shared credit in all their works, whether they were written alone or together, or one added more than the other, as Lennon/McCartney. This did work for a length of time with much success and royalties were evenly shared. There came a point where branching off and various other elements started tearing a riff in the duo. Some of these issues are still in discussion today, even though John Lennon has passed away.

It has been proven time and again to discuss legal issues with your collaborator(s), band or group before the first dollar is made on a CD or song sales begin and certainly before the hoped for record deal lands on your plate. Though it may be uncomfortable, you must tackle this subject to avoid problems long term. Not only discuss these issues but get it in writing. A letter of agreement signed by all parties involved on percentages on earnings, credits and name order is all you need and should cover every single song produced. Get ALL your bands issues with credits settled from the get go, covering all your bases. Also, work out what works best for you ALL if someone wants to do solo projects.

Those credits then should be applied online in your music Discography. Credits show upfront, in print, who owns and has rights to which parts of the song and/or music created. The listener will then know up front WHO to contact if they have a project in need of that person’s contribution.

Things happen in bands, just as they do in marriages, jobs and living life. Members have disagreements, leave, go solo, start new projects, and sometimes tragedies happen. Credits establish acknowledgement, recognition, and ownership of the work done as wells as give thanks to those that helped get the job done. It’s the professional way to do business.

Kensington and Chelsea on a Budget

Those not that familiar with London are still aware that Kensington and Chelsea are two of the more expensive and glamorous areas of the big city. So, when you are looking for something different and you’re on a fairly tight budget, where do you start?

Of course when staying in the West End, visiting one of the many museums are excellent options for an enjoyable day out. The Science Museum, Natural History Museum and The Victoria and Albert Museum are all located here and you can visit them for free almost any day of the year.

Head a little further out of the city to Chelsea and you will come across the oldest botanical garden in London – the Chelsea Physic Garden. At only £9 for adults and £6 for students and children it offers a little tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Golborne Road market, although connected to Portobello Road offers something a bit different, with a mix of stalls offering a variety of international foods and goods. The area is often referred to as Little Morocco due to the many Moroccan restaurants and shops, so there is definitely a bit of an international feel to the area. Markets are held here every day except Sunday.

Kensington Gardens and Palace are an excellent way to spend some time exploring. The Palace is now home to Wills, Kate and little Prince George so you’ll feel a sense of royalty wandering around, and perhaps you’ll even catch a glimpse of the Royal family. The area is beautiful, any time of year, go and soak up some horticulture!

Another area to enjoy the outdoors is Brompton Cemetery. It might sound a little odd to spend time in graveyard, but this is one of the finest and oldest Victorian graveyards in all of Britain. There are over 200,000 stones and it is considered to be one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries.

Lastly, the London Olympia Exhibition Centre is home to a variety of music shows, food fairs, business events and so much more. Every week there is something different to visit and a lot of the events are free or very cheap.

So, if you are looking for a bit of class on your London city break, but can’t quite afford to dine on the Kensington Roof Gardens, there is still plenty to see and do without burning a hole or three in your pocket.

Safety Arsenal – The Basics of Self Defense Devices

The Basics of Self Defense Devices. Self defense devices are by their nature intimidating. For those unfamiliar with their use and operation, they can be just as foreboding by their looks alone as for their deterrent on criminals. This is actually misleading, because many of the self defense devices commonly available to the public are conceived and designed with both safety and ease and quickness of use deliberately in mind. The following five devices are by no means a complete list of the self-defense products available to the consumer, over-the-counter market. However, they are routinely the most popular and are also widely available online.

Stun Guns and Tasers

Stun guns and tasers use powerful electric shocks to disable opponents by constricting their muscles to the point of temporary disability. Many are small enough to fit inside a woman’s purse or within an inside jacket pocket. They are battery operated. A taser is a stun gun that uses two powerful pitons and flexible wires to deliver the electrical charge. A stun gun is routinely shaped much like a woman’s razor and contains powerful conducting needles that deliver the shock.

Pepper Sprays

Pepper spray, sometimes referred to as OC spray, capsicum spray, or OC gas, uses powerful irritants to inflame the eyes and sinus passages. Pepper sprays commonly use some form of capsaicin, an irritant found within chili peppers of Central America. Very common in riot control among police agencies worldwide, the effects of pepper spray are both nonlethal, but also very painful and discomforting. Pepper spray routinely causes coughing, watering of the eyes, spastic sneezing fits, and other allergy-like effects. Capsaicin is not soluble in water, and removing it from the face and sinus passages usually requires considerable effort. Nasty stuff to say the least!

 Mace

Mace, like pepper spray, is a form of tear gas or lachrymatory (tear-inducing) agent. It’s typically delivered via aerosol spray can. Its volatile nature has made it illegal in many countries, and pepper spray has largely replaced it for civilian use. MACE is also a brand name of pepper sprays that include gel and foam solutions. The term «mace» is often used interchangeably with «pepper spray,» though the two have important chemical differences.

Personal Alarms

Similar to a car alarm for the body, personal alarms include handheld sirens, whistles, and other accessory-ready items that are easily carried on the person to alert of danger. Many personal alarms are electronic, while some whistles retain the timeless mechanisms of such items of yesteryear. Some electric models also include strobe lights, flashlights, and other distracting effects that improve visibility even while working to disorient an attacker. Still other classes serve as dog repellents and early-warning home safety alarms.

Diversion Safes

Remember the spy TV show where every routine item housed a secret compartment or gadget? Diversion safes work on the same principle, allowing security items such as spare keys, money, or valuable information to be stored «hidden in plain sight» with a replica façade. Some diversion safes take the appearance of weathered car fluid containers, making them perfect for camouflage use in the garage. Others are designed to resemble light plugs, book, flowerpots or wall sockets.

With the array of self defense products, and new self defense product options available to combat crime and deter theft, many Americans can now protect themselves and loved ones effectively.

Review of Cheikhos Restaurant in Leicester

Although this award-winning restaurant is not in the heart of the city centre, the superb food and warm Italian welcome make it well worth the short trip to Oadby. A family run business that has been delighting residents and visitors alike for the past 20-years, Cheikhos Restaurant in Leicester has won numerous awards for excellent customer service. The relaxed interior provides the perfect location for a chilled out lunch, intimate dinner or a festive, family celebration. The warm and inviting staff are on hand to make your visit extra special, and can help guide diners in pairing sumptuous dishes with their extensive wine list.

Fresh, seasonal ingredients are at the heart of Cheikhos menu and their unfussy, traditional approach to Italian cuisine means that natural flavours are the star of the show. Starters include gamberetti grosso, large prawns sautéed in garlic butter, lemon juice and fresh cumin, moules marinere and an indulgent Mediterranean seafood salad with calamari, mussels ad prawns on a bed of seasonal leaves and tossed with a classic Italian dressing. Many Italian restaurants in Leicester serve wonderfully fresh seafood but if it isn’t your thing then try the bruschetta di supreme, avocado and chicken salad or the rich and earthy mushrooms sautéed in garlic, white wine and cumin with a touch of cream. Diners with a decadent streak may opt for the refreshing, bubbly melon con sciampage, a crown of sweet melon filled with fruits and smothered in champagne.

As you would expect from a classic Italian restaurant there is a great selection of meat dishes to follow the tasty starters! Chicken lovers will be hard-pressed to not be tempted by the pollo Cleopatra, which is a supreme of chicken, flamed in Grande Marnier and finished with a punchy pink peppercorn and orange creamy sauce. Of course there are classics such as pollo caccatura, plump, juicy chicken stuffed with goats cheese, wrapped in parma ham and served with mushrooms and a grain mustard sauce. The porko calvados comes highly recommended and features fillet of pork partnered with apricots wrapped in delicious parma ham accompanied by a baked apple and calvados sauce.

What really makes Cheikhos Italian restaurant special are the family connections, reflected in the carefully thought out menu. Like many restaurants in Leicester care and consideration has been given to a ‘signature dish’, which in the case of Cheikhos has been inspired by his beloved daughter. The delightful Yasmine Arabella consists of lean fillet of beef, which has been sliced open and filled with mozzarella cheese, and succulent king prawns before being wrapped in parma ham. Laced with French mustard and flamed with Courvoisier, sautéed mushrooms, onions and cherry tomatoes are added and the whole dish is finished with an exclusive Chateau Talbot wine and crème fraiche sauce. The dish is an absolute triumph and is testament to the superb, skill of the chef.

With so many dishes to choose from on the menu, guests could be forgiven for overlooking the pasta! However, there is a fantastic range of classic pasta dishes guaranteed to tempt the taste buds. The ravioli di carne is a real treat with delicate egg-pasta parcels filled with mincemeat and garlic and served with deep, flavourful tomato and black olive sauce. Vegetarians are also very well catered for at Cheikhos and can enjoy such delights as feuille de brik, light filo pastry filled with courgettes, mushrooms, peppers and sundried tomatoes and served with a touch of parmesan and lime juice. Those wanting something a little heartier can tuck into the gnocchi ricotta which features light potato dumplings with petit pois, ricotta sauce and spicy ratatouille and a piquant sauce. A regularly changing set menu gives diners additional options, but there is no question that if you’re after a taste of authentic Italian cuisine Cheikhos Restaurant in Leicester is the place to go!

Replica Football Shirts – A Potted History

A replica football shirt is defined as an (official) copy of a kit. In the UK it is a huge business. According to a BBC report from August 1999 about price fixing in the replica shirt market, it was then worth £210m – I’ve not found anything more recent apart from a report by a German company Sport+Markt (www.sportundmarkt.de) which found that at Summer 2008, the top 116 teams in Europe earned 615m euro from marketing. Quite what ‘marketing’ includes alongside replica shirts isn’t stated (I only looked at the free summary of the report), however it’s interesting to note that the report also states that English fans spend the most (an average of 65 euro each per annum) and that Nike and Adidas account for 80% of the total number of replica football shirts manufactured. The recent take-overs by Adidas of Reebok and then by Nike of Umbro should further serve to underline just what a huge market it is.

Of course it wasn’t ever so. In the good old days any old red shirt could indicate that you were a Liverpool or a United fan. A dark blue would indicate either Everton or Chelsea. There were only certain teams which deviated – Arsenal had those white sleeves and Blackburn Rovers played in their blue and white halved shirts. But then things began to change. At Coventry City, Jimmy Hill realised the kit was something more than just a uniform to wear on the pitch and he introduced the first ever kit of just one colour (other than white) as they changed from their hitherto mostly dark blue shirts with white shorts to a kit of all sky-blue. Bill Shankly only adopted all red for his Liverpool side in 1966-66 – 3 years after Coventry’s all sky-blue affair.

Moving into the 1970’s Leeds United, who’d changed from their traditional colours of blue and gold to all white in the early 1960’s, were the first club to offer their fans the chance to buy replica kits in 1975 as part of their deal with kit supplier Admiral. When Don Revie left Leeds to take over as England Manager the national team entered into a similar arrangement with Admiral. Things really took off when Liverpool became the first club to wear a sponsor’s name on their shirts following their 1979 deal with Japanese electronics manufacturer Hitachi. Here’s a list of prominent English clubs and their first identifiable kit manufacturer and sponsor:

Arsenal

Umbro (1978/79)

1981/82 (JVC)

England

Admiral (1974/75)

n/a

Leeds

Umbro (Aug – Dec 1973) then Admiral

1981/82 (RFW)

Liverpool

Umbro (1973/74)

1979/80 (Hitachi)

Man Utd

Umbro from 1955

1982/83 (Sharp)

Newcastle Utd

Bukta (1974/75)

1980/81 (Scottish & Newcastle)

The purchase of a replica football shirt nowadays represents no small investment for the average fan. Of that 65 euros spent on average by an English football fan on merchandising, a fair chunk is devoted to that all important replica shirt. Whether there’s a better way of supporting your team of course is a moot point – in fact it always (well since 1975) has been.
