Transfer Rumours Abound

The July 1 opening of football transfer season is rapidly approaching and with its impending arrival come swarms upon swarms of transfer rumours. But which ones are done deals and which ones are just mere smoke and ashes? Does it really matter? Half the fun is in the speculation. Here’s a break-down of some of the top transfer stories..

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldo. It seems like Cristiano Ronaldo is all anyone is talking about lately. Real Madrid wants him, and it now appears they are willing to pay out the nose for him. Recent rumours have them offering him a record breaking five year deal worth £300,000 a week. To make things more interesting, Ronaldo has said on more than one occasion that he wants to make the move to Spain. On the other hand, Manchester United says they won’t sell him «at any price». However, it has been said that everyone has their price. Only time will tell if Read Madrid is willing to pay United’s.

Aaron Ramsey

The seventeen-year-old midfielder is being courted by three premier league teams. Cardiff City appears to be willing to let him go for £5 million, but the young star is still trying to decide which move would be in his best interests. While many people would see Manchester United as the obvious choice, his value at the club is a bit of a question. They plan to sign him but then loan him directly back to Cardiff for a year. The message this sends is that they want to sign him while he is relatively cheap, but that they don’t necessarily have any intention of utilizing his skills any time soon. On the end of the spectrum, Everton and Arsenal appear to be offering him a spot on their first teams. It looks like the young Ramsey needs to choose between possibly benching for United or playing for someone else.

David Villa

Valencia is having money issues and needs to unload their star striker at the cost of about £17 million. The key players in the battle over David Villa seem to be Arsenal and Tottenham. But just to complicate matters, Chelsea and Real Madrid have also expressed an interest in signing Villa. To make things more interesting, especially for the other teams, Villa has said that he would like to play for Arsenal, but he won’t make a decision until after Euro 2008. It’s a risky move on his part; a good showing at the tournament could increase his value, but less than stellar playing or an injury could hurt him in more ways than one.

Ronaldinho

If United was serious about not selling Ronaldo, Ronaldinho’s asking price of £200,000 a week would make him by far the highest paid player in the world. While his potential transfer to Manchester City doesn’t seem to have the drama of the other trades, it could still change the face of football by pushing prices to never before seen heights. And since no decision is agreeable to everyone, people are questioning whether or not Ronaldinho is really worth it. His performance this season was rife with injuries and time on the bench. Is acquiring Ronaldinho the best move for Manchester City’s new manager? It seems a risk he is either willing to take or one that he was given no choice about. Either way, for all appearances, Ronaldinho is probably making the move. Will any or all of them actually change clubs? Probably, but at this point, nothing is certain. While Villa and Ramsey will most likely be signed, the high end demands of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho make their transfers more important, but less likely. It will be an interesting year -football may well change forever.

How to Achieve Six Packs With Ab Exercises and a Personalized Diet

Ask any of the guys walking along the road if they wished to have a six pack and most of them would say yes. Why are there even ladies out there who are working to get ripped abdominal for themselves? Some people have the idea that all you need for a six pack is to do an ab fitness exercise thrice each week. Although it may be a solution to some, for others it may not be sufficient.

The fact is, in order to be successful in attaining your visible six pack, you need to work on reducing your body fat. Or else any muscles gained from your routines will be covered by a stubborn layer of fat. One way you can reduce the body fat is to ensure proper food intake along with a proper fitness workout routine.

Types of Workouts

In order to get the results you want, you do not need fancy machines or strenuous ab exercise routines. All you need to learn to do is sit ups, oblique crunches and leg raises. To further maximize your workouts, you may combine the routines as described above to form a great ab workout and exercise. The trick for this is to continue with your routine until you can feel the burn, after which you will have to repeat each sessions two or three times every week.

It is advisable to work your abs on alternate days as your body need some time to recover from your extensive routines. Once you stick with this, you will soon have a strong midsection. Remember to alternate between the routines in order to continuously challenge your body for better results. Add this to your healthy eating habits and you will surely be able to see your six packs developing well.

Create your Personal Fitness Diet

An important factor in maintaining a balance with your routines is to increase your daily intake of vegetables, fruits, lean meats and plenty of water. You should try to minimize your intake of fattening and sodium filled foods and other processed food. Instead of grabbing that can of soda, switch to plain water or healthier choices like tea or fruit juice. Try to understand what your body is telling you and eat the food you feel well shortly after. Stop eating junk food and food that makes you feel poorly. Once you are more conscious about your eating habits, achieving your six packs is just a few steps away.

Cardio Routines

In special cases, eating healthily and practicing regular ab exercise fitness routines may not be sufficient. For people with too much body fat, it might be crucial for them to include a session of cardio in order to burn the extra fat away around their midsection. Cardio workouts include squats, jumps, mountain climbers or even jumping jacks. Repeat these for 1 minute to boost and add intensity to your routines.

However, remember that there is no way to spot and reduce. This means that you will burn fats all over your body and not just targeting your midsection. With patience and perseverance, you will ultimately see that fat melting away. Include some sessions of biking, running, or even walking to increase your metabolism. This helps to further burn the extra fat and it helps to tone your body to develop the body you have always wanted. Intake of fat burners should be discussed with your doctor.

Shoreditch – The New West End of London

For the past five years, Shoreditch has been the place in London to discover new possibilities in the nightlife world, with the coolest and newest bars, pubs and clubs. Popularized by the artists, it has been a haven for the underground and fashion conscious types who like a little bit of creativity and the unknown when venturing out for night in London.

Shoreditch bars and clubs are smaller than the West End nightclubs, they are decked out in the latest urban art trends and interior, and will be playing the latest underground music you can find, from English Folk, to Dubstep. Drinks are cheaper, entry fees are lower and there is a rawness that will not be replicated on a commercial dance floor in Leicester Square. Try Hoxton Pony or T bar for a taste of the above.

This is what has drawn in Londoner's and tourists alike, and made this a fantastic alternative to the glitzy, overhyped and overpriced nightclubs in the west end. Shoreditch bars and clubs have increased rapidly over the years, and there is always somewhere new to discover that will keep your nights out an interesting and explorative affair.

Recently though, a new wave of Shoreditch venue has been popping up on the streets of Old Street and Hoxton. Bar and Club operators have spotted an opportunity to exploit the buzz and footfall on the Shoreditch streets by bringing a certain West End flavor to these East parts of London. This has been a subtle shift that will go unnoticed by most Shoreditch party goers but it is an important observation to make as this could represent the start of a significant shift in the London bar and club scene.

It appears bar and club owners feel there is more of a demand for high end Cocktail drinking and more exclusive, swanky interiors to cater for the Shoreditch crowd. Shoreditch now rivals the West End as one of the top night-life destinations of London so with that brings money and customers to cater for. Perhaps not everyone wants a sweaty, retro-inspired, Checkered Shirt dominated dance floor anyway? So what type of venues am I discussing?

Well, let's take Glo Glo's Bar for example. Located in the basement of the Great Eastern Dining Room, this feels like a hidden members club, tucked away in an exclusive hotel in the heart of Mayfair or even Tokyo, so you would perhaps be a little confused to stumble across this bar on a Friday night in Shoreditch. With seating wrapped all around the main center-piece bar, you can sit and marvel at the fine cocktails being served up. There is a DJ in the corner offering up smooth House Beats, and an electric atmosphere full of chat and laughter. This venue has class and style in abundance and is a long way from the usual Indie-graffiti inspired Shoreditch bar. This marks a new trend towards the new wave of Shoreditch Cocktail bars .

Glo Glo's is not alone, there are plenty of other bars in Shoreditch offering up a more West End styled experience. Take a trip down to see Ninety Eight Bar on Curtain Road. This is a former Members bar that has now gone public, and has some of the finest and creative Cocktails around in Shoreditch. You will be impressed with the elegant piano and eccentric but beautifully crafted décor; This is a hidden gem of a bar.

I predict this trend to continue as we see more and more West End type venues opening up in Shoreditch, but with more style and class, come higher drinks prices so it might leave Shoreditch old timers, scrambling for the venues of Dalston. Shoreditch is now leading the scene of London nightlife and I think offering up even more variety of bars, clubs and pubs can only be good for those who love Shoreditch as a place to go out in London.

The Beatles – Live in Barcelona

«I’m sorry, he’s from Barcleona,» Basil Fawlty used to say to bemused guests at Fawlty Towers, to explain the erratic performance of his Spanish waiter, Manuel.

In a bizarre reversal, I found myself saying to the street-puppeteer on La Rambla, Barcelona’s main tourist thoroughfare; «It’s all right, I’m from Liverpool,» in an attempt to reassure her as to my qualifications for assisting her with her Beatles puppet show. Obviously, because I am from Liverpool, I am an expert on anything remotely connected with the fab four, even a puppet show, about which I know less than nothing.

What drew my attention in the first place was the pathetic sight of the Beatles reduced to a duo of John and

Ringo only, Paul and George apparently comatose on the stage. Whether this was an attempt to

authentically re-create their early Hamburg performances, where they often performed for hours on end

before collapsing with exhaustion, I do not know, but I suspect it may have had something to do with the

absence of her partner.

Naturally, I could not allow this sorry state of affairs to persist: I immediately offered my services, free of

charge, that the Beatles could perform once more as the fab four we know and love. She was less than

enthusiastic, suspecting (rightly) that I was possibly the worse for drink, and insisted on giving me a lengthy

tutorial on the mechanical workings of the puppets, which not only danced rhythmically to the music, but

were also able to strum their instruments, by means of one half of a pair of scissors which was worked by

the puppeteer’s thumb.

When I had mastered this technique to her satisfaction, she fired up the CD player, and The Beatles

demonstrated once again what made them such a great live band. The puppets themselves were

remarkably accurate – John Lennon had a suitably prominent nose, Paul was left-handed and played a

violin-style bass, and they even seemed to move like the real moptops, although Ringo was possibly more

animated than I remember.

Initially, all went well. A small crowd formed, the music blared out of the tinny speakers, the band kicked up

a storm. To increase the authenticity still further, I maneuvered Paul over to George’s microphone for the

harmonies – the puppet lady was clearly dismayed by this – with two puppets so close together, a fatal

string entanglement was the only possible outcome. Her eyes flashed at me, and Paul returned to his

rightful position on the edge of the stage. We did one more song together, but she made it clear that

enough was enough. I was asked to leave the group. Now I know how Pete Best felt.

Gordon McQueen – The Manchester United Giant

The enmity between Manchester United and Leeds United may very well originate from the War of the Roses, but in soccer terms the Roses rivalry started back in the swinging sixties 1960 when Leeds United were led by Don Revie and Manchester United by Sir Matt Busby.

Kilbirnie born Gordon McQueen began his soccer career at St. Kilbirnie. Mirren who signed him as a 18 year old. Impressed by the hard working youngster, Leeds United manager Don Revie eventually lured him to the high flying Yorkshire club for £ 30,000 in 1973. The Scottish stopper quickly managed to establish himself in the first team at Elland Road and he was a regular member of the vastly talented Leeds United side that went on to win the League Championship in 1974. However, following Revie's departure to manage the England team, Leeds were declining and hatred between the Elland Road players started to bubble over.

Brought to Manchester Utd by new manager Dave Sexton for £ 495,000 in February 1978, the Scotland international became one of the first well known Leeds United players to sign for the Lancashire club. At Old Trafford, Gordon McQueen linked up with former Elland Road team mate Joe Jordan who had made the switch from Leeds United to Manchester United only a few weeks before. Evidently, Leeds United selling two of their biggest stars to old rivals Manchester United did not go down well with the Elland Road faithful. Incurring the wrath of the Leeds supporters, the two players were targeted with booing every time they were appearing against their old club.

While at Old Trafford, Gordon McQueen helped Manchester Utd win the FA Cup final in 1983 after a replay against Brighton and Hove Albion. A rough and rugged player, McQueen went on to make a total of 184 first class appearances for the Reds. The blond giant stayed at United until 1985 when he finally announced his retirement from the game because of persistent injuries.

Eventually going into soccer management, he took over the helm at Scottish club Airdrieoninans in 1987. Known for his brilliance in the air, Gordon McQueen won 30 full caps for his native country after making his first appearance for Scotland against Belgium in 1974.

"But Manchester United are Manchester United. They are the bigger of the two clubs, and always will be. Even going from a place like Leeds, with all their household names, you noticed a huge difference. Manchester United weren't the best, but they were the biggest. " Gordon McQueen quote.

Brad Thorn: A Tribute

What can be said of this man and his career that hasn’t been already? His commitment and passion towards both rugby union and rugby league is something that can be admired and respected by all, and should serve as a benchmark, albeit a very high one, that any professional sporting player should strive to achieve. You have to admit that if you reached for Brad Thorn and only just missed, you’ve still done pretty well.

His first stint at the Brisbane Broncos is immediately note-worthy, not just for his own personal achievements but the speed in which they were achieved. The 94 season, in which he debuted in week twelve, saw him take out the rookie of the year award with representative honors for Queensland and Australia to follow within the next three years. The 97 grand final would be Thorn’s first taste of premiership glory, one he would experience the following year and then again in 2000.

After achieving success at every level in rugby league, Thorn turned his attention to the ruthless and unforgiving world of New Zealand rugby. Someone of lesser talent and determination may have stumbled in this new, harsh environment but he barely missed a beat. The Canterbury Crusaders took out the NPC with Thorn slipping, almost effortlessly, into the position of lock forward. A chance to become the first man since Bill Hardcastle to represent Australia in rugby league and New Zealand in rugby union was offered to him at seasons end, but he turned it down citing his uncertainty of his commitment to the fifteen man game. But, come 2003, he could resist the temptation no longer and made his official debut for the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup and continued to represent them in the Tri-Nations which New Zealand would go on to win.

A final NPC with Canterbury would see Thorn return once again to the Broncos in 2005. While many expected to see the champion forward in the twilight of his career, nothing would seem further from the truth. He would go on to not only represent Queensland but also take out another premiership in 2006. After being named one of the 20 greatest Broncos to ever play for the club, he made the decision to, once again, switch back to rugby union.

Thorn was again in unstoppable form, achieving Crusader and All Black selection in only his second year back in the game. After more super 14 titles and Tri-Nations success he finally reached the holy grail of rugby by taking out the World Cup after a hard fought 8-7 win over France in 2011. As if this wasn’t enough, a short stint with European champions Leinster would see him add the Heineken Cup to his long list of achievements.

When you want to describe a man like Brad Thorn any number of superlatives will do. But to fully understand just how remarkable this career is, you must first realize that it hasn’t even finished yet. That is correct, at age 37 Thorn has signed on with Super Rugby franchise the Highlanders for the 2013 season. For myself, it seems almost certain that this will be his swan song but for some reason a lingering doubt remains. I guess with someone like Brad Thorn, can you ever be sure of anything?

Glasgow Rangers Football Club

The 1919/20 season heralded the dawn of a new era for Rangers as manager William Wilton and number two William Struth initiated a Glasgow Rangers dominance that was to last until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Though winning this season with 31 wins out of 42 games and scoring 106 goals, it was overshadowed by the subsequent death of manager, William Wilton.

William Wilton

When the Scottish League was formed in 1890, Wilton became its first treasurer as Rangers shared the title with Dumbarton.

The season before he was appointed to his dual-role, Rangers had achieved the first ever 100% league record, winning all 18 games and scoring 79 goals. No team before or since has ever achieved the same, although several teams have gone unbeaten in a league season since, including Arsenal in 2004.

Rangers were to win 8 league titles with Wilton as manager

Sadly,Wilton did not see the full extent of the team’s success. The day after the final match of the season in 1920, he left or the Bank Holiday, which he planned to spend at Gourock, but he died in a boating accident on the first day of his holiday.

Taking over the manager’s job was William Struth, Struth guided Rangers to a further 14 titles before the war. This period was also noteworthy for the attendances. On the 2nd January 1939 a British league record was broken as 118,567 fans turned out to watch Rangers beat Glasgow Celtic in the traditional new year holiday old firm match.

Glasgow Rangers is a great football club with a great history.
