NCAA – How it Started

It all started in 1905. Due to the many injuries that occurred in the rough and tumble sport of football, President Theodore Roosevelt gathered many, if not all, of the leaders of athletics in Washington for 2 conferences to encourage them to reform the rules of the sport. In New York City under the leadership of Henry M. McCracken, The Chancellor of New York University, a meeting of 13 universities met and the rules of football changed. When the second meeting convened, the 62 members established the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States aka IAAUS.

In 1910 the IAAUS officially changed its name to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As this organization grew in membership so did its difficulties with maintaining its integrity.

A crucial time in the NCAA’s history occurred after WWII. The abuse of the rules that were established to protect the integrity of the game came under scrutiny. There were infractions of the rules concerning financial aid and the recruitment of college athletes. To establish more stringent guidelines the «Sanity Code» was adopted.

It was in 1951 that it was decided that the Association needed a full-time leader who could oversee the day to day affairs of this ever growing entity. Walter Byers was named to that post and in 1952 the national headquarters of the NCAA was established in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Association flourished and grew over the years and in 1973 the members split into 3 divisions with each having legislative powers in 3 separate competitive genres. Consequently, these divisions divided into sub-divisions and the NCAA expanded.

In 1980 women’s athletic team sports was added into Division I, II, and III. In 1981, at their 75th annual meeting, the women’s athletic sports was voted into the Association and expanded the women’s championship program by 19 events.

Over the past few years,2003 to 2009, the NCAA was headed by Myles Brand. He passed away in September of 09 and Jim Isch was named interim president. As of this date, a permanent president has not been named.

"One For the Gipper" – The Original Story

President Ronald Reagan is tagged fondly as «The Gipper» as the result of his movie portrayal of Notre Dames’ legendary football player. The nickname is so firmly attached to the president that the real Gipper is nearly forgotten.

The true story is clouded by the mist of time. His hometown of Laurium, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, maintains a website devoted to their local hero. This much is certain: he was born Feb. 18, 1895 to Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Gipp.

He attended the Calumet public schools, but he never played high school football. However, he was an all-around athlete. He participated in track, hockey, sandlot football and organized baseball. The Laurium baseball team was the champion of the Upper Peninsula in 19l5, with George playing center field.

Gipp had not given any thought of going to college. He was, however, proficient in baseball, table pool, poker and dice. His greatest achievement was winning a gold watch for ballroom dancing.

The husky six-foot, 180-pound Gipp at age 21 was persuaded by a Notre Dame grad that he could have a baseball scholarship for the asking.

Beyond these statistics, we must rely on sports historians.

A colorful account of Gipp’s spectacular career is rendered by James A. Cox. It begins one autumn afternoon in 1916 with two freshmen playing baseball catch on the playing field of a Midwestern university.

Without warning, a football sails over the fence from a nearby gridiron where the school’s varsity was practicing. It hits one of the young men. He picks up the errant football and kicks it back over the fence 70 yards away.

On the other side of the field, a coach whistles in awe and races over. «Hey, You! You with the baseball. What’s your name?»

«Gipp,» comes the laconic answer.

«Where you from?

«Michigan.»

«Play high school football?»

«Nope.»

«Well, I think you’ll make a football player,» says the coach. «Come out tomorrow. We’ll suit you up and see what you can do.»

The young man shrugs. «I don’t know,» he says vaguely. «Don’t particularly care for football.»

Thus was the meeting of Gorge Gipp and Knute Rockne. A few days later Gipp shows up for a tryout.

* * *

There was no difficulty in switching scholarships when it was learned he could run 100 yards in ten seconds, throw pin-point passes half the length of the field and kick 60-yard punts with ease. He became an All-American halfback.

Gipp established a reputation in his first out-of-town game with the freshman team against Western Michigan State Normal. Wrote Cox:

«Playing halfback, Gipp piles up yardage. But the score is 7-7 as the fourth quarter grinds down with only a couple of minutes to go.

«The Irish have the ball. The quarterback calls punt formation – kick away and play for a tie.

«Gipp demurs. He wants to try a field goal. The quarterback looks at him as he would at a crazy man. From where the kicker will stand, to the opposing goalpost — which at that time was on the goal line — was more than 60 yards. Nevertheless, the quarterback orders, ‘Punt.’

«The ball is snapped, Gipp drops it end-first to the ground – as was the custom then — gets a perfect rebound and booms the ball through the uprights. It was a 62-yard-field-goal that earned an enduring place in the record book.»

* * *

In the spring of his freshman year, Gipp tried out for the baseball team and made it as an outfielder. He played only one game.

Ignoring a signal to bunt, he blasted the ball over the fence for a home run.

«Why?» the manager demanded. «Don’t you remember the signals?»

«Sure,» replied Gipp, «but it’s too hot to be running around the bases after a bunt.» The next day he turned in his baseball uniform and concentrated on football.

He earned his way by waiting tables in the university dining room for board and lodging. He picked up cash by playing in nearby semi-pro and industrial baseball leagues.

He also frequented the pool halls and other low joints of South Bend.

A hangout called Hullie & Mikes became his second home. He once said, «I’m the finest free-lance gambler ever to attend Notre Dame.»

His room mate, Arthur (Dutch) Bergman, explained:

«Nobody around South Bend could beat him at faro, shooting pool, billiards, poker or bridge. He studied the percentages in dice rolling and could fade those bones in a way that made professionals dizzy. At three-pocket pool, he was the terror of the parlors.

«He never gambled with other students, though his crap-shooting skills helped pay the way through Notre Dame for more than a few of his friends. I’ve seen him win $500 in a crap game then spend his winnings buying meals for destitute families in South Bend.»

Gipp cut so many classes in 1919 he was kicked out of school. He took a job as a house player at Hullie & Mikes gambling emporium.

Aghast, Notre Dame alumni sports fans deluged the college with complaints. The university gave him a special exam — which he passed – and reinstated him. Thereafter, Gipp came to practice when he chose, doing what he felt like doing. No one complained. Coaches and players knew he was fiercely devoted to winning. The team revolved around him.

The 1920 season established Gipp as «immortal.»

One Saturday afternoon, Notre Dame found itself down 17-14 to Army.

In the locker room, Rockne unleashed one of his famous half-time fight speeches. Gipp seemed bored. Rockne turned to Gipp and challenged him, «I don’t suppose you have any interest in this game.» Gipp responded, «Don’t worry, I have $500 on it, and I don’t intend to blow my money.»

At game’s end, Gipp had piled up 385 yards rushing – more than the entire Army team. He scored one touchdown by running back a kick-off, threw two pin-point passes setting up a touchdown. He almost single handedly led Notre Dame to a 27-17 comeback victory.

Gip paid a price for that day’s performance. He was weary, pale and a little bloody. His distress was so obvious, the West Point crowd stood and watched in awe as he left the field.

There were four games left in the season. A clean sweep would give Notre Dame a shot at the national championship.

Purdue went down 28-0. At Indiana the next week, Gipp suffered a dislocated shoulder that sent him to the bench with bandages. The Hoosiers shot to a 10-0 lead, which they held into the fourth quarter.

The Irish pushed to the 2-yard line but stalled. Gipp jumped from the bench and shouted to Rockne, «I’m going in!»

«Come back!’ roared Rockne.

Gipp ignored the command. On the second play, he crashed through for a touchdown. Then he kicked the extra point, and returned to his bench.

On the next Notre Dame possession, as time was running out, the Irish worked the ball to the 15-yard line. Again, Gipp rushed from the bench to take charge.

He dropped back for a game-tying dropkick to tie the game. The Hoosiers stormed to block him. Calmly Gipp tossed the ball to a receiver on the 1-yard line. On the next play, with the whole Indiana team converging on Gipp, he smashed off tackle with his injured arm tucked close. It was a ruse. The Notre Dame quarterback danced into the end zone with the ball for the winning touchdown.

While the team returned to South Bend, Gipp went to Chicago to teach a prep-school team how to drop kick. Icy wind brought on aches, fever and sore throat. Back at South Bend, Gipp took to his sick bed.

The next Friday, against Northwestern, Rockne kept feverish Gipp on the bench until the fourth quarter. Then, to chants from the crowd -«We want Gipp!» — he allowed his star to participate in a few plays – topped off by a 55-yard touchdown pass to pile up a 33-7 rout. .

* * *

On Thanksgiving Day, Notre Dame trounced Michigan State 25-0 to complete its second successive all-win season, but Gipp wasn’t there. He was in the hospital with pneumonia and strep throat – serious illness before antibiotics.

It was clear that Gipp was doomed. On Dec. 14, 1920, he converted to Catholicism and was given the Last Rites. His mother, brother, sister and Coach Rockne kept vigil by his bedside — while the entire student body knelt in the snow on campus praying for him.

While he was comatose, some one whispered, «It’s tough to go.»

Gipp heard it and roused. «What’s tough about it?» he said scornfully.

Beyond this we have only Rockne’s version.

Gipp turned to Rockne. «I’ve got to go, Rock,» he whispered. «It’s all right. Sometime, when the team is up against it, when things are going wrong and the breaks are beating the boys — tell them to go in there with all they’ve got and win just one for the Gipper.»

There is doubt that the usually modest Gipp actually made the dramatic death-bed speech, but Rockne always swore it was true.

It was eight years, however, before Rockne felt it necessary to invoke George Gipp’s last words.

It was at Yankee Stadium, New York City, Nov. 12, 1928. Notre Dame had lost two games. An undefeated Army team held the so-so Fighting Irish to a scoreless tie at halftime. In the locker room, Rockne stood up and addressed his weary players.

«Boys, I want to tell you a story I never thought I’d have to tell.»

Then Rockne related — in serious voice — George Gipp’s final challenge. When he reached the climax – «Go in there and win one for the Gipper» – it is said the players tore the locker room door ajar rushing to the field. The Irish played the second half as if the legend of Notre Dame led the way.

At game’s end the score was Notre Dame 12, Army 6.

The Gipper had scored one last time – from the grave.

EPL 2011-12: Manchester United Vs Tottenham Match Time

Premier League match time dawns at Old Trafford as Manchester United clash with Tottenham on Monday, August 22.

While champions United began their Premiership campaign with a 2-1 win, away at West Brom, Tottenham will be playing their first game, their opening match with Everton scheduled for August 13 having been postponed owing to damage done to the local area during the London riots.

Manchester United’s victory at The Hawthorns came at the cost of injuries to Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand whose appearance in the Tottenham game will hinge on a reassessment of their match fitness. Both players walked off in the second half, Vidic with a calf injury, and Ferdinand with a hamstring strain.

Another worry for Sir Alex Ferguson must be the poor showing of David De Gea, between the posts. With the departure of Van der Sar, Manchester United have lost a vital cog of recent years, and if the young Spaniard De Gea was expected to fill the Dutchman’s boots with any degree of conviction, De Gea’s nervous debut against West Brom did nothing to support that expectation.

In fact, it was a judgement error from De Gea that brought West Brom back into the game via a 37th minute equaliser from Long, after a Rooney strike put the Red Devils ahead on 13 minutes. United’s win hinged on an own goal from Reid with 10 minutes of regulation time left.

For United, the brightest memory from the West Brom game would have been the brilliant performance of Ashley Young. Apart from the assist to Rooney that gave Ferguson’s wards their first goal, it was Young’s effort that Reid deflected into his own goal to give Manchester United their winner.

The last time these teams met was at White Hart Lane in January, earlier this year. That match ended in a goalless draw, in a tale of missed opportunities for both sides.

The United attack appears to have got into an early groove following their come-from-behind win in the Community Shield encounter with Manchester City. The champions are always formidable opponents, playing before home fans, at Old Trafford. More than anything else, Monday’s match could be a test of resolve, for Tottenham’s back-line.

And while Manchester United must be considered favourites to retain their crown, it will be interesting to see how they contend with the challenge posted by a top six club, early in the season.

Top 5 Ways To Get Rid Of Belly Fat, Including Exercises

With the advances in technology these days, going to the office may be as easy as turning on the computer and logging on to a network. With the majority of white collar work already accessible through the internet and mobile systems, more and more people no longer find it necessary to get up from their couches in order to get things done. Although these tools help us from accomplishing our tasks more easily, it has also created a generation of people who live a sedentary lifestyle. This inactive lifestyle has led to a host of health-related problems.

A «pot belly», «beer belly», or «apple shaped» figure is most associated with an inactive lifestyle combined with overeating, and has been strongly correlated to the risk for cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension and myocardial ischemia, as well as insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus. Recent studies have shown that reducing the amount of belly fat can significantly reduce the risk of acquiring these life-threatening diseases. Although there are numerous ways to reduce the amount of fat in the stomach area, the top five belly fat exercises and stomach-busting measures are enumerated and discussed herein.

1. Cardiovascular exercise.

There is no substitute for this old-fashioned activity. Sit-ups and crunches may make your abdominal muscles tighter but you have to get rid of the exterior flab first so that your abs will show. Researchers have found out that as little as a 20-minute daily cardiovascular exercise can do wonders to burn calories and melt away body fat. Jogging, running, cycling, swimming, aerobics, jumping rope, and even dancing can all do wonders to trim down not only that stubborn stomach area but most other body fat as well.

2. Strength-training sessions.

Once you have rid yourself of the surface fat, regular strengthening exercises can help you lose those remaining flab from your waist area. This is the part where targeted belly fat exercises come in. Abdominal crunches, stomach twisting, hip raise, leg lifts, air cycling, reverse crunches, and hanging leg raise are just some of the «spot exercises» that one can do to really define those abdominal muscles.

3. Learn to relax.

Scientists have recently studied the effects that stress has on body fat and has found a direct correlation between the two. Cortisol levels in the blood are found to be elevated when the body is exposed to stress and this then produces insulin resistance, causing a craving for fats and sugary food. Instead of worrying, why not try to read a book, listen to soothing music, or do yoga.

4. Refrain from cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol drinking.

Nicotine and alcohol are major stressors to the body, thus increasing hormone cortisol levels.

5. Low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet.

Carbohydrates are easily broken down to glucose which is the body’s major source of fuel. Because they are so easily digested, the body feels hungry again in only a short span of time. Proteins, on the other hand, are not easily processed and can thus provide more energy over a longer period, decreasing the need to constantly feed. It is also recommended to have a water intake of about 1.5 to 2 liters a day, and to have 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

The ABC of Shanghai Girls – A Lesson in Loneliness

This investigation like all research started with an idea gathered from anecdotes heard from many young women around Shanghai who were, good looking, successful, had money and were confident. However they all had one thing in common – they were not in a relationship of any kind. The hypothesis for this paper was simple: were girls here in Shanghai alone because the men wanted to find sub-dominant women who they did not feel threatened by in term of social status? The results clearly show that in fact men sought out woman of a lower social status to have a relationship with and so leaving the vast majority of successful girls alone and unfulfilled.

Introduction:

In order to substantiate the hypothesis a model of relationship symbiosis was devised in order to test women and men’s attitudes to the model and if they agreed with the proposal. This model was a simple correlation of social status to symbiosis between couples. In China many men seek a lower status woman as a way of feeling in control of the relationship through money, status, family and intelligence. Therefore they tend to seek and relate to women one step below them on the social scale. Women on the other hand are looking for a man for, security, status, home-making and propagation i.e. one step at least up from their social status.

If a woman earns more income than the man, has a higher social status or property then he feels he will lose face in front of his family, work colleagues and friends. They will feel he cannot provide for her or show a higher level of achievement. They also cannot cope with a woman of more intelligence, often leading to arguments that they cannot win against a better educated opponent. China is a highly judgemental society were social comparison not only thrives here but positively rules peoples lives in trying to live up to and match social expectations of others.

Brown (1986) suggested that social equity theory shows that people in general look for rewards, exchanges and most of all the amount of investment in a relationship. This is the situation where couples add up what they invest in a relationship such as, who does what tasks, who is the more caring, loving, sensitive, who takes care of things, financially, family or domestic. In this situation couples are looking for a reward over the cost of the relationship in the form of profit. Thibaut and Kelley (1959) went further than Brown to suggest that couples also compare themselves to others in relationships to see how they measure up and so decide if you would be better off in a different relationship somewhere else. In China this is certainly the way things appear to the outsider looking inward at the society and its credo. Although both of the above theories seem to suggest people as basically selfish, in that they are only interested in their immediate rewards, there are those who make sacrifices in the hope of future rewards, such as the daughter who looks after her aging parents in the thought that when they are gone she can have her own life. This is as Eric Berne (1960’s T.A.) would say an After-Script, that a person will wait for happiness in the future by a sacrifice today. The alternative as Berne sees it is the Until-Script in which until you do something you cannot be happy. For example until you have a successful career you cannot spend time being in a loving relationship.

The Model:

The model that was shown to Chinese participants, the research was straight forward and kept very simple. The model was shown to adult classes of Chinese students learning business English in many areas around Shanghai.  Almost all were single men and women of ages 20 through to 35. After a short introduction to the concept the model was drawn on the white-board in simple format as shown below:

Step 1

MEN                                                               WOMEN

A                                                                     A

B                                                                     B

C                                                                     C

Step 2

An explanation was given then as to the scenario in the model as follows;

«A» men look for «B» women because they can control them, dominate them and have a higher social status.

«B» men do the same thing looking for «C» women.

«C» men have a hard time finding suitable women and often looked for uneducated country girls or poor family city girls.

«B» women seek «A» men in order to find social status, security and support for her family in the future through marriage to the «A» man.

«C» women seek «B» men for the same reasons. However a «C» woman dreams of an «A» man but is unlikely to attract them.

«A» woman finds «A» men too weak, unsupportive of their ambitions and afraid of their power and social status – and therefore end up alone with few suitable possible mates. «A» women can be attracted to foreign men who do not have the same social worries as Chinese men. The Chinese women being highly educated mostly speaking English well are able to communicate with foreigners in Shanghai, who are often businessmen or highly educated teachers or professors.

Step 3

The participants where then asked to discuss the merits of the model, give examples from their own lives and whether they agreed with the over-all concept bearing in mind people are individuals and that the model is merely a reflection of traditional values, Chinese culture and social mores of the current situation in Shanghai as of 2008.

Step 4

Free voting was then encouraged as to the validity of the model from the participant’s perspective. (There is of course through the explanation in step two some leading of the participants in the model’s view, however the researcher believes this was not enough for the participants to be mis-led when asked to vote from their own opinion as to whether they agreed with the model’s concepts.)

The Results:

At the end of each presentation most of the participants voted in support of the model (95%) – those who objected did so not because they thought the model wrong but in fact from personal experience of not having been in a relationship or that they hoped the model was in fact wrong and sought hope in that their own future relationships would be based on more romantic sentiments than the model suggested. In fact the model ignored «love» as a variable as in Chinese society this is considered unimportant when choosing a possible mate or marital partner for the future. The women who participated identified most closely with the model but the men often found that they wanted to disagree but when thinking about their own relationships found the model in fact had predicted their own current situation.

Discussion:

The results clearly show how difficult it is for an «A» girl, educated, successful, and glamorous in Shanghai to attract a suitable man to offer her support, equal status and long term commitment. The «B» and «C» girls are in fact more likely to have boyfriends and to attracted suitable husbands in the short term. According to Winch (1958) happy marriages are about fulfilling each others needs, even if this means an unequal partnership where one dominates and the other is dependent in nature. This complementary view of relationships was seen clearly by Berne (1960’s) in the theory of Transactional Analysis in which symbiosis in relationships was the most common factor. That is women are looking for a man to look after them and men want a woman to look after. Therefore «A» women in particular in China lose out to this idea. Chinese men do not want a more successful woman than themselves or one that has a higher social status that may embarrass them to their family and friends.

Many of the «A» girls that saw the model identified with the sentiments expressed in the model and often quoted anecdotal evidence to support the model from their own failed relationships where social status was the major issue in the break-up of the romance. Also many agreed that foreign men were a good choice for them sometimes, in the fact they are less concerned with social status and encouraged success and ambition in the woman’s career and life. This non-judgemental approach gave the women the support they feel they needed in their high pressure jobs and lifestyle.

Those who identified themselves as possible «B» women agreed they sought high social males as mates and looked first for security and a good future for themselves and their families. Under the one-baby policy of China this has created a great fear amongst young women that they must find a suitable husband to support their families in old age.

There were few «C» women in the participants mainly due to their lower status and education and are not likely to turn up in business English classes. Most «C» girls work as waitresses, shop-girls, cleaners and similar low-paid, low-status work.

There is a tendency to marry a person of a similar age in China, much more so than in Western countries where women more often seek men a few years older than themselves. This could in China be a contributory factor in the failure of relationships as the men are often less mature, socially and empathetically than the girls they are with. In this variable the likelihood of symbiosis is low and eventually leading to unhappy relationships based on unequal maturity between the couples.

Summery:

The sad part of this ABC model in Shanghai is that it may be seen in other big cities in China from Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou to Hong Kong in that successful, powerful and dominant women find it hard to find suitable men to encourage, support and love them for who they are; that is modern women with their sites set on ambition and wealth. The «A» girl’s social status is assured through her education, dedication and fashionable demeanour.

Many of the «A» girls admitted loneliness, frustration and disappointment in many of their failed relationships with men who are only interested in their own social status and saving face in Chinese society and culture. While we may think of this situation as sad, many of the actual woman took a positive view in that they had freedom to pursue their career, could determine their own life-style and enjoy autonomy without a man telling them what they should do and should not do in their daily lives.

In the future the model will be continued to be shown in classes and see if over time the results change in line with more modern thinking about success in women in China and a more mature attitude change in the men in seeing a woman successful and ambitious is a thing to be proud of not embarrassed by.

The Geography of Derby

Derby City is in the south east corner of the county of Derbyshire, in Trent valley. Along with Nottingham and Leicester it makes up the sub-region of the East Midlands, Derby is the smallest of these three cities. The world map reference for the city is latitude 52o55′ north and longitude 1o28′ west. The River Derwent is the main river running through it and is one of the few geographical features for this city, which is, by and large, flat and featureless. The average elevation in the city centre is around 50 metres. To the extreme east of the city, at Spondon and the extreme west of the city, at Mickleover, the elevation does rise to just over 100 metres.

The first known settlement in Derby was made by the Romans, in the district now known as Darley Dale, who built a fort overlooking the River Derwent. This quickly expanded to include a civil settlement from which the town and then city developed. Derby was awarded city status during the celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth II 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne in 1977. Up until 1997 Derby was the county town for Derbyshire. However, on becoming a unitary authority on April 1st 1997 the administrative centre for the county transferred to Matlock. Derby City occupies an area of about 7800 hectares and has a population density below 30 people per hectare, making it one of the country’s least crowded cities. Derby city is split into 17 electoral wards that return 56 local councillors. The city is represented in the House of Commons, at Parliament, by three constituency MPs.

Climatically, Derby has the typical temperate climate of England. Its average December temperature is just below 40C and it has an average high of 18oC in July. The main wind direction for Derby is south westerly, meaning that most of its weather systems arrive from the Atlantic. Rainfall in Derby is typical for the English midlands, averaging around 750 millimetres of rainfall a year, with an expectancy of there being some rain falling on 150 days in the year.

The surface Geology of Derby is deposits of mudstone and sandstone that are between 1 and 10 metres thick, underlying that are mainly Triassic mudstone bedrocks. To the east and north of the city these overly the Carboniferous coal measures that formed the South Yorkshire coalfields. Whilst to the north is the Derbyshire Dome of Upper Carboniferous Limestone, which marks the southern edge, or beginning, of the Pennine Way. This is also part of the Peak District which was the first National Park to be created in Britain in 1951. Walks along the River Dove, in Dovedale, are particularly popular with tourists. However, the Peak District has contributed to the economy of Derby in more ways than just tourism. It was a major area for sheep farming and the production of wool as well as being rich in minerals. The Peak District has some of the best and most diverse Geology in England. Here you can find: Limestone’s, Shale’s, Gritstones and Sandstones including the famous Millstone Grit. Now more or less completely worked out it was a major area for Lead ore mining and a form of Fluorspar called ‘Blue John’ that was much sought after for making jewellery. The quarrying of Limestone has been taking place in the Peak District since Roman times for building stones and the production of cement and mortar. This process continues today with over 7 million tonnes of Limestone being extracted annually, from the twelve active quarries inside the park.

Engineering is very important to the economy of the city. Apart from the Rolls Royce works the city has many railway engineering companies and the Toyota production plant nearby. Almost 35% of the population are employed in manufacturing of one kind or another, making it one of the cities in the UK where manufacturing employment is greater than public administration and health services. Derby is the beginning of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site, which is acknowledged as being one of the places in which the British industrial revolution began in the 18th century. The combination of local wool supplies and water mills to power the new weaving looms made Derby one of the model systems for, what were then, modern factories.

The average house price in Derby city is £145, 000, with prices rising (on average) from £110,000 for a terraced house to £235,000 for a detached property. The average price for a flat in Derby is £120,000. Generally, during the period 2006-2007, house prices in Derby City rose by 10%. Compared to most of the rest of Derbyshire, house prices in the city are lower than all areas other than Spondon, to the east and Bolsover to the north east of the county. The areas of Mickleover, to the west of the city and Darley Dale to the north, are the most sought after residential areas

You need to take precautions and follow a set of steps to be awarded with the name of a single company that meets your budget providing you the best of services ensuring all your requirements are liberally met.

First and foremost make sure you have the right count. You will need a clear picture of how many t-shirts you need designed. You may be a member of a team taking part in a marathon or one among a group of friends attending a theme party. Either way, ensure to get the sizes of all the team mates. This way you will know the budget you can afford to set. Most t-shirt printing companies give you the option of choosing their own t-shirts, this helps with avoiding multiple bills and payments.

It is important to order a spare for each of your team members as there are chances that the t-shirt might get dirty and they will need a change. It is vital that members dress neatly in case of a promotion. This will help increase brand visibility.

The next step is to identify a design. The design should coordinate with the t-shirt. If you are a company, then the logo of the company can be incorporated. Choose the company colors so that you know it is going to be different and helps in standing out of a crowd.

Identifying and setting a deadline is crucial. The printing company has to be briefed on when you would like the delivery to be made. When identifying a deadline you need to keep in mind that there may be alterations or changes required so it is wise to set a window that will give you space for changes.

Setting a budget is important because this will allow you to choose the best options within your budget. There are many options available these days. Some of it are vinyl printing, embroidery etc. The choice is based on your budget and requirement.

World Cup Goalkeepers – Zeljko Kalac, Australia

Zeljko Kalac is an Australian goalkeeper of Croatian descent who made his international debut in 1992. Since then he has played in over 50 international games, his most celebrated stint being with AC Milan.

Known as the Spider on account of his two meter plus frame and flailing arms, Kalac started his career with Sydney United. He later moved to Leicester in Europe but it was not an eventful sojourn.

A call to Roda JC, a little later, gave Kalac the push he needed. The Dutch side reached the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in 2002, and Kalac moved to Serie A with Perugia. Luck smiled on Kalac when Perugia’s fortunes dipped, and Kalac found himself as the back up keeper to the celebrated Dida in the AC Milan goal.

An ankle injury to Dida brought Kalac into his own. Besides Champions League, Kalac got a chance to play in Coppa Italia. The preparations for World Cup 2006 saw Kalac being summoned to do national duty, as deputy to Mark Schwarzer.

Kalac may not be number one goalkeeper of the Socceroos but he certainly is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the game. He is also the most reliable, and can be expected to keep most forwards at bay.

Lionel Messi – The Greatest Footballer Ever?

The footballing world watched on in utter amazement and delight yesterday as Messi's Barcelona put 7 goals past a hapless Bayer Leverkusen side in a UEFA Champions League game at the Nou Camp. For the first time ever, we saw one person score 5 goals in a Champions league game and it so happened to be no other person than Lionel Messi.

Yes, the number of goals may be a new record which I think he can better in the years ahead, but it's more the manner and the sheer class with which he scored the goals that made many a football enthusiast admire this rare talent that has emerged in this generation.

Of course, we all knew about his ability already but his display yesterday has put him in another League. The way in which he made the difficult act of scoring spectacular goals look so easy was just a joy to watch. One was a left foot lob, another a delightful right foot lob, then a careful control from an acute angel, a laser-guided placement with his left foot and then a drive through a number of opposing players. His unique sense of picking the right moments in games to do what he does best is simply quite extraordinary.

He has often been compared with the Legendary Pele and his fellow country man Diego Maradona as to who is the greatest player ever but I will dare to say that even these legends will secretly admit that it's just a matter of time before this boy from the backside of Rosario, Argentina supersedes their achievements if he hasn't already done so. Considering the fact that Messi is only 24 years of age and has at least 10 years of top flight football in him, the prospect of what he could achieve can be incredible.

It's almost inconceivable that the world would never have seen what happened yesterday had it not been for the Barcelona scouts who intervened to save his career when he was being given up on. River Plate, one of the biggest clubs in the Argentine First Division who wanted to sign him from Newell Old Boys Club in Rosario, soon discovered that his inability to endure playing for 90 minutes was due to the absence of a growth hormone that hindered his normal physical development as a person. He looked so tiny for his age at the time that, they were not sure if he could develop physically to meet the demands of the modern game even though his talent was never in dispute. The money needed to put him on a special dieting program was just too much they couldn't afford it. They gave up on him but thankfully, he was spotted and taken to Barcelona's La Masia's training academy and the rest, they say, is history.

Talking about humble beginnings, his first contract was signed on a white handkerchief because his Dad was so frustrated with the directors of Barcelona at the time due to their indecision about his son's future that, he gave Charles Rexach, the Director of football at the time a brief window of opportunity to make up his mind. Either they give him an answer there and then or forget about Messi forever once they fly back to Argentina. His exploits today has proven that it doesn't matter where you begin in life but rather, it's about you believing in your unique abilities and giftings given to you by God regardless of your size, age, race or gender.

As great as the current Barcelona team is at the moment, it is my firm conviction that if you pluck Messi out of this team, they would not have achieved as much as they have. He brings a certain quality to the team which puts them way above any other team at the moment. When games are tight, he is the only one that can come up with some special instinctive play capable of breaking down opposing teams whereby creating opportunities to score goals.

The flip side of the above argument is that, even the greatest players will find it very difficult to perform at their optimum when they are either surrounded by mediocre players or the team they find themselves in doesn't play to their strengths. This may well be the reason why he is yet to hit the same dizzy heights with the Argentine National Team as he's done time and time again with his Club side.

With all that he's achieve so far, hearing him speak just makes you believe why he may go on to accomplish much more. He seems to exude this important virtue of humility which is vital not only to help get you to the top of your game but more importantly, to stay there. There isn't any air of "superstardom" about him. His lifestyle is just simple, both on and off the pitch. I'm yet to hear any news about Messi involved in any "off the pitch" incidents that you so often associate with English Premiership players. He just seems to enjoy playing in huge stadia as much as he did when he played on the streets of Rosario.

So is he the greatest player ever? The legendary Pele seems to think he is the best by far in the world at the moment. Most football Managers, fellow professionals and the football community at large seem to think he is the best ever even though he's yet to lead Argentina to Word Cup glory. I would not dispute that either. I think we haven't seen the best of him yet. He is simply sublime.
