Shoreditch – The New West End of London

For the past five years, Shoreditch has been the place in London to discover new possibilities in the nightlife world, with the coolest and newest bars, pubs and clubs. Popularized by the artists, it has been a haven for the underground and fashion conscious types who like a little bit of creativity and the unknown when venturing out for night in London.

Shoreditch bars and clubs are smaller than the West End nightclubs, they are decked out in the latest urban art trends and interior, and will be playing the latest underground music you can find, from English Folk, to Dubstep. Drinks are cheaper, entry fees are lower and there is a rawness that will not be replicated on a commercial dance floor in Leicester Square. Try Hoxton Pony or T bar for a taste of the above.

This is what has drawn in Londoner's and tourists alike, and made this a fantastic alternative to the glitzy, overhyped and overpriced nightclubs in the west end. Shoreditch bars and clubs have increased rapidly over the years, and there is always somewhere new to discover that will keep your nights out an interesting and explorative affair.

Recently though, a new wave of Shoreditch venue has been popping up on the streets of Old Street and Hoxton. Bar and Club operators have spotted an opportunity to exploit the buzz and footfall on the Shoreditch streets by bringing a certain West End flavor to these East parts of London. This has been a subtle shift that will go unnoticed by most Shoreditch party goers but it is an important observation to make as this could represent the start of a significant shift in the London bar and club scene.

It appears bar and club owners feel there is more of a demand for high end Cocktail drinking and more exclusive, swanky interiors to cater for the Shoreditch crowd. Shoreditch now rivals the West End as one of the top night-life destinations of London so with that brings money and customers to cater for. Perhaps not everyone wants a sweaty, retro-inspired, Checkered Shirt dominated dance floor anyway? So what type of venues am I discussing?

Well, let's take Glo Glo's Bar for example. Located in the basement of the Great Eastern Dining Room, this feels like a hidden members club, tucked away in an exclusive hotel in the heart of Mayfair or even Tokyo, so you would perhaps be a little confused to stumble across this bar on a Friday night in Shoreditch. With seating wrapped all around the main center-piece bar, you can sit and marvel at the fine cocktails being served up. There is a DJ in the corner offering up smooth House Beats, and an electric atmosphere full of chat and laughter. This venue has class and style in abundance and is a long way from the usual Indie-graffiti inspired Shoreditch bar. This marks a new trend towards the new wave of Shoreditch Cocktail bars .

Glo Glo's is not alone, there are plenty of other bars in Shoreditch offering up a more West End styled experience. Take a trip down to see Ninety Eight Bar on Curtain Road. This is a former Members bar that has now gone public, and has some of the finest and creative Cocktails around in Shoreditch. You will be impressed with the elegant piano and eccentric but beautifully crafted décor; This is a hidden gem of a bar.

I predict this trend to continue as we see more and more West End type venues opening up in Shoreditch, but with more style and class, come higher drinks prices so it might leave Shoreditch old timers, scrambling for the venues of Dalston. Shoreditch is now leading the scene of London nightlife and I think offering up even more variety of bars, clubs and pubs can only be good for those who love Shoreditch as a place to go out in London.

Brief History of the LPWA

The LPWA, or Ladies Professional Wrestling Association, was a wrestling promotion that featured women wrestlers with an emphasis on athleticism rather than beauty. The association was started by ex-wrestler Tor Berg in 1989 and lasted until 1992. Berg attempted to begin the promotion again in the beginning of 1999, joining forces with the NWA and changing the name to form the WNWA (Womens National Wrestling Alliance), but this venture was also short-lived as the promotion only lasted until 2000.

Before closing up shop in 1992, the LPWA held its one and only pay-per-view event, which was known as the «Super Ladies Showdown». The event took place on February 23, 1992 in Rochester, Minnesota at the Mayo Civic Center. The main events of the pay-per-view showing were the LPWA Singles Championship and the LPWA Japanese Championship. There were 12 matches televised for the event, with four of them being first round match-ups for the Japanese Championship, two semi-final matches for the Japanese Championship, and then the actual championship match.

The LPWA Japanese Championship was won by Harley Saito, who defeated Denise Storm to win the belt. The LPWA Singles Championship was won by Terri Power, better known as Tori from the WWF, who defeated Lady X. Lady X had previously won the championship over Susan Sexton on January 31, 1991. Lady X was also known as Peggy Lee Leather of the WWF, who formed a tag team partnership with Wendi Richter. Richter later became the WWF singles champion and defeated Leather in her quest for the belt. These two went on to battle each other in POWW(Powerful Women of Wrestling) as well. Lady X was also known for her performance in the lingerie battle royal for the AWA SuperClash III pay-per-view event and also appeared in WOW (Women of Wrestling) as Thug from 2000 to 2001.

The Tag Team Championship was also part of the LPWA’s only pay-per-view event and featured Leilani Kai and Judy Martin beating Bambi and Malia Hosaka for the championship. Kai was part of the WWF in the 1980’s and at one time was the champion after defeating Wendi Richter. She also paired with Judy Martin to form the Glamour Girls, who became both WWF and LPWA Tag Team Champions at different times in their careers. Kai also held the NWA World Womens Championship and wrestled for the WCW under the name of Patty Stonegrinder.

One of the most famous woman wrestlers of all-time, Madusa Miceli, who wrestled for the LPWA, WWF, and also for All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling. She was the first non-Japanese wrestler to compete in the All-Japan league of women wrestlers.

Following is a synopsis of the list of the LPWA’s championship holders.

LPWA Singles

  1. Susan Sexton / Awarded title in January of 1990
  2. Lady X / Defeated Susan Sexton January 31, 1991
  3. Terri Power / Defeated Lady X February 23, 1992

LPWA Tag Team Championship

  1. Team America (Heidi Lee Morgan and Misty Blue) defeated Bad, Black, and Beautiful (Black Venus and Bad Girl) March 13, 1990
  2. The Glamour Girls (Judy Martin and Leilani Kai) defeated Team America February 28, 1991

With the closing of the LPWA in 1992, all of these womens wrestling titles were abandoned.

UEFA Champions League Group Stages Final Games Review

The UEFA Champions League reached the final stages of the Group round this week with the just the final group positions to be decided.  Which teams would make up the final 16 and move on to the dramatic knock stages of the competition, which will resume in February next year?  Which teams would top their groups and therefore potential gain an easier draw? Other issues to be decided were which further 8 teams would earn the consolation of a ticket into the UEFA Cup and which remaining 8 teams would finish bottom and say good-bye to all European football this season.

We start our review the answers to these questions on Tuesday night and with the battle to top Group D.  The spoils finally went to Liverpool who climbed above Atletico Madrid. Liverpool fielded a slightly under strength side against PSV Eindhoven, resting captain Steven Gerrard and with striker Fernando Torres still not fully fit.  Yet the former Champions still managed an impressive 3 – 1 away win despite going a goal down.  PSV on the other hand are one of the eight teams that are now totally eliminated from European after finishing bottom of the group.

The opening goal from PSV was scored by Danko Lazovic goal which came from a corner that should never have been given.  The ball clearly touched a PSV player last only for the Russian linesman, standing a matter of yards away, to award a corner to the total disbelief of everyone.  The decision totally incensed Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, and he was subsequently spoken to by the referee.

Fortunately for Liverpool, the goal did not have a lasting bearing on the game.  Ryan Babel brought the score to 1 – 1 with a header in first half injury time.  Then in the second half, Liverpool’s Spanish winger Albert Riera, scored with an absolutely brilliant strike from 25 yards.  The 5 times champions were in total control and  youngster David Ngog sealed the win, with his first senior goal for the club. That all meant that Atletico Madrid had to, at least equal, or better Liverpool’s result to finish top of the group.  Unfortunately, they could manage a 0-0 draw away to Marseille.  The draw was sufficient for Marseille to claim third position and with it a place in the UEFA Cup.

GROUP D FINAL POSITIONS

1 Liverpool 14 pts

2 Atletico Madrid 12 pts

3 Marseille 4 pts

4 PSV 3 pts

In Group A it was the Italian team Roma who finally claimed the number one position beating French side Borbeaux 2-0.  As a result the French side finished bottom of the group and were knocked out of Europe altogether.  It was Roma’s Brighi who slotted in a low cross from Perrotta that broke the deadlock just after the hour mark.  Then Francesco Totti fired in from the edge of the box to secure the win and top spot.

Meanwhile, Chelsea welcomed back their Ivorian striker Didier Drogba, albeit only as a substitute.  Even though they won their game 2- 1, thanks to Drogba’s winning goal, overall Chelsea didn’t look too convincing against the unfancied Rumanian side Cluj.

Scolari’s Chelsea did need to win to secure their passage to the last 16 and it was left to the talismanic Drogba to come off the bench and seal the win with an excellent finish. This win for the Blues means both Spain and England will have four teams in the last 16 of The Champions League.  This is the first time two nations have achieved the feat in the same season.

GROUP A FINAL POSITIONS

1 Roma 12 pts

2 Chelsea 11 pts

3 Bordeaux 7 pts

4 CFR Cluj 4 pts

In Group B there was a slightly surprising finishing position for Inter Milan and manager Jose Mourinho.  They had to settle for second place behind the Greek side Panathinaikos.  The Greeks beat the Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta 1 – 0 whilst German’s Werder Bremen beat Inter Milan 2-1.  The result securing Bremen with a place in the UEFA Cup.

It was a dull and dreary first half in Germany but Claudio Pizarro put Bremen ahead then Markus Rosenberg made it 2-0.  Inter did pull a goal back through Zlatan Ibrahimovic who started the game on the bench.  He curled in a fantastic 25-yard shot but it turned out to be nothing more than a consolation.  The result meant Werder Bremen held on to seal a place in the Uefa Cup.

The Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta, who have surprised me a little in this season’s competition, their first, actually  came into this final game against Panathinaikos with a chance of progressing to the last 16.   Unfortunately, they couldn’t live up to the huge expectation and didn’t even make it through to the UEFA Cup due to Bremen’s win.

GROUP B FINAL POSITIONS

1 Panathinaikos 10 pts

2 Inter Milan 8 pts

3 Werder Bremen 7 pts

4 Anorthosis 6 pts

The final standings in Group C had already been finalised before kick off on Tuesday evening. It was therefore no great surprise that, in front of a rather empty Camp Nou, first-placed Barcelona fielded a somewhat weakened side.  The decision saw Barca lose their 20-match unbeaten run by losing 2 – 3 to Shakhtar Donetsk, who end up in the UEFA Cup.

Swiss team Basle ended a miserable European campaign with a solitary point after they were defeated 1-0 at Sporting Lisbon. Sporting, who won thanks to Yannick Djalo’s first-half goal, finished second in the group behind Barcelona on 12 points.

GROUP C FINAL POSITIONS

1 Barcelona 13 pts

2 Sporting Lisbon 12 pts

3 Shakhtar Donetsk 9 pts

4 Basle 1 pt

On Wednesday evening, Group E saw Manchester United, rather surprisingly, held to a 2-2 draw by Aalborg at Old Trafford.  However, it didn’t stop the current champions from finishing top of their group as Celtic managed secure their first victory in this season’s competition by beating Villareal 2 – 0 at Park Head.

Utd’s Argentine striker Carlos Tevez opened the scoring after just three minutes and Aalborg must have feared the worst but to their credit, they equalised when Michael Jakobsen headed home. Even better was to come however as Jeppe Curth’s header right on the stroke of half-time gave Aalborg, what can only be described as a shock lead.  It was England striker Wayne Rooney who saved Man Utd’s blushes when he produced a trademark powerful finish.

Villarreal had of course been hoping against the odds that Man United would somehow slip up against Aalberg so they could finish top of the group, however they failed to deliver their end of the bargain losing their game as Gordon Strachan’s Celtic finally produced a win in this season’s campaign.  Unfortunately, the win was too little to late for the Glasgow side who are now out of Europe altogether.  No disrespect to Aalberg but I wouldn’t have put any money on them finishing anywhere else other than bottom of the group when the draw was made back in the summer.

GROUP E FINAL POSITIONS

1 Man Utd 10 pts

2 Villarreal 9 pts

3 Aalborg 6 pts

4 Celtic 5 pts

The German giants Bayern Munich finished Group F in first place after a good 3-2 away win at French champions Lyon.  The result means Lyon had to content with finishing second.

German forward Miroslav Klose put Bayern in front before Luca Toni set up Ribery for their second.  Ribery then turned provider for Klose as Lyon fell apart.  Lyon fought back though with Govou pulling a goal back Karim Benzema added a second.  But they could draw level and Bayern clung onto their victory. In the group’s other game Alberto Gilardino headed in the only goal to give Fiorentina victory over Steaua Bucharest and with it a place in the Uefa Cup.  Steaua on the other hand finished the group rock bottom ending their campaign with a solitary point.

Gilardino headed into the far right side of the net after a corner from Juan Manuel Vargas before Steaua were reduced to 10 men when Pawel Golanski was sent off in the 72nd minute for a second yellow card.

GROUP F FINAL POSITIONS

1Bayern Munich 14 pts

2 Lyon 11 pts

3 Fiorentina 6 pts

4 Steaua Bucharest 1 pt

It was a bad night for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal as they failed to achieve the draw they needed to see them finish top of their group.  Wenger, as he quite often does, sent out a young side but they offered little resistance and were outplayed by Porto, who went on to win the game 2-0 and with it leapfrogged over the Gunners to top the group.

Porto’s goals come from Bruno Alves who headed the 2004 champions into the lead before Lisandro Lopez doubled the lead with a cool finish. In the group’s other game, Roman Eremenko scored a first-half goal that gave Dynamo Kiev a 1-0 win over Turkish side Fenerbahce and with it saw them claim the last remaining place in the Uefa Cup.

The midfielder collected Artem Milevskiy’s reverse pass from the left and struck a precise left-footed shot that went between the legs of the goalkeeper.

GROUP G FINAL POSITIONS

1 Porto 12 pts

2 Arsenal 11 pts

3 Dynamo Kiev 8 pts

4 Fenerbahce 2 pts

The final 16 teams have been decided for this season’s UEFA Champions League.  The draw for the knock out stages takes place on the 19th December and they way the group standings have panned out, it is bound to throw up some really intriguing ties to look forward to.

Weight Loss Supplements – Tools for Your Weight Loss Arsenal

I have said it before – weight loss is a matter of burning more calories than you consume. However, any time you can use a tool to make things easier – why wouldn’t you?

Weight loss supplements are a tool that can help you speed your metabolism, curb hunger, or even absorb some of your calories which come from fat or carbs.

Here is a brief introduction of some weight loss supplements in the different categories:

Thermogenics – Thermogenics are usually a stimulant which contains one or more of the following: Ma-Huang, Caffeine, Green tea, Synephrine, or Guarana. The goal of thermogenics is to accelerate fat burning past the point of diet alone as well as give you energy and decrease appetite. Thermogenics are not for everyone especially if you are sensitive to stimulants or have any type of medical condition. Always check with your doctor first.

Appetite suppressant – Hoodia is the name you will hear come up when you are talking about suppressing your appetite. It has been said that tribesman used hoodia gordonii before a long hunt in order to control their appetite. It is said that hoodia sends signals to the brain leading the brain to think that the body is full. If your weight loss efforts seem to be hindered by a massive appetite – Then perhaps hoodia is for you. Look for pure hoodia on the label.

Carb Blockers – Carb blockers reportedly prevent the body from absorbing some of the unwanted starches. The active ingredient is phaseolus vulgaris otherwise known as white kidney bean extract. I don’t think anyone believes that taking a carb blocker will give you free access to all the carbs you want to consume but may be of benefit to the occasional cheater.

Fat Blockers – The active ingredient in a fat blocker is Chitosan. Chitosan has the ability to bind fats and cholesterol before they are absorbed by the body. Taken right after a meal, fat blockers will absorb some of the fat from your diet and allow it to pass through. Some reports indicate that Chitosan can absorb 7 times its weight in fat.

Chitosan is a fiber derived from the shells of shellfish such as shrimp.

Choose your weight loss supplements wisely. Purchase a well known brand from a reputable dealer and expand your weight loss tools arsenal.

There are a lot of studies performed and it showed that drumming helps to calm down one’s nerves, process grief, make you feel good and even aids you with a huge array of physical ailments. If you try to join a drumming circle you will meet a community of like-minded individuals to learn and grow with as well.

It can take a bit of practice to do conscious breathing or focused breathing but once you get the hang of it you’ll learn be able to reap its benefits.

And if none of the tips here you think doesn’t work, try to keep this in mind: «In the end, everything will turn out okay. If it’s not okay, then it is not the end.»

World Cup Goalkeepers – Jens Lehmann

Born in Essen, Germany in 1969, Jens Lehmann’s soccer career kicked off in 1989 with FC Schalke where he played for almost 10 years before moving on to AC Milan in 1998.

Said to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Lehmann created a name for himself while with Schalke. However, after signing up with Milan, his performance took a dip and he was dropped from the squad after just five matches. He made a decision to move back to Germany and signed up with Borussia Dortmund where he went on to win the German League title in 2002. Lehmann then went on to sign up with the Gunners in July 2003 and was seen as Arsene Wenger’s answer to replace the ageing David Seaman.

During his first season with Arsenal, Lehmann played in every match and the Gunners went on to clinch the FA Premier League title without dropping a match. Lehmann, who many say has also undergone stringent mental training to reach his potential often comes out of his goal to intercept passes. He was man of the match during his club’s performance against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup Final after he made numerous brilliant saves to keep the score at 0-0 after extra time.

Lehmann then went on to save a fierce shot from Paul Scholes during the penalty shoot-out, handing a 5-4 victory to Arsenal.

However, one doubt remained on the mind of fans as they pondered his temperament following several «incidents» during the games. The German goalkeeper first donned his gloves for the national team in February 1998 in a match against Oman and to date has earned more than 25 caps for his country. He has however been in a constant tussle for a place between the posts with Oliver Kahn, from Bayern Munich. As many will be comparing him with Kahn, Lehmann will require a lot of mental strength to deal with the pressure. So, mental training should become an important part of any footballer’s training program today.

However, luck was on his side and according to a recent statement from the German Football Federation, Lehmann has won the race to keep goal for his country. The issue of who would don the Number 1 jersey has dominated the German football scene and the pressure was intense on national coach Jurgen Klinsmann to make a decision.

Public polls had recently favoured Lehmann, whom many said was in fine and consistent form.
