Banal Pictures Or Memorable Photographs From Digital Cameras – 5 Photo Tips

Have you ever been invited to flip through hundreds of pictures taken by a family member or a good friend and found it very boring? It doesn’t matter if it is an old-fashioned color slide show, or a modern production from digital picture files shown by a digital projector, a lot of pictures shown on the television screen or a photo album or scrapbook.

Honestly, most of us find it very boring, unless the photographer is really having some commitment to his or her photography. It helps if the show is including some people you like or some places you are familiar with, or at least have visited. But how can the person who isn’t occupied with photography improve the outcome of photos from digital cameras to get some better and more memorable photographs and to avoid to take too many banal pictures?

I have included a little exercise for the reader who will spend one hour to improve her photography, see the end of the article. Here I run through the most important photo tips, I can give you.

1. Go close on the subject

Most people include too much in the picture, and that makes it messy and less interesting. Decide what you really want to photograph and then exclude most other things, except one or a few persons. Also include something close even when you shoot landscapes.

2. Avoid a messy background

The more uniform in color and texture the background looks like, the sharper and interesting is the main subject becoming.

3. Include one good color in the picture

A common mistake is to try to include as many colors in a photograph as possible. One good color will often do a better job. Especially if it is a bright color. Red and yellow are often regarded as impressive colors if they are used with care. Blue is also a good colour if not that aggressive as red and strong yellow.

4. Include a human dimension in the picture

If possible include a human dimension in the picture. It doesn’t need to be some persons, but something most people can relate to. Pictures of monkeys in the zoo look more interesting if they are showing some behavior that have resemblance with human beings’ behavior compared to pictures with truly nature behavior. A human dimension can be added to many kinds of subjects you want to photograph.

5. When possible shoot several frames of the same subject

When it is convenient for your activities always try to shoot a number of alternative shots – it doesn’t cost you a cent with a digital camera. Really try to make each shot a little different. When time allows it afterwards, make sure to delete all frames except the best one. If no one is really good delete all frames.

When we take pictures it is mostly to be able to remember people, special events and special experience. When these are related to ourselves we might be very tolerant about the level of required quality that is acceptable for a keeper – a picture we want to keep for infinity.

But that kind of pictures aren’t interesting for other people, unless the pictures have some special qualities. Remember how our daily life is filled up with pictures, often taken by really gifted photographers and artists.

A little exercise might help you develop your photography to unknown high levels:

– A. Take your digital camera. Make sure you have plenty of space on the memory card and a fresh battery.

– B. Make sure you remember the list above of photo tips 1-5.

– C. Select five things in your local environment (could be people, settings, pets, flower etc.) and plan how you can take pictures of each thing following the 5 photo tips.

– D. Take at least 10 different pictures with different angels etc. of each of your five things.

– E. Sort the pictures on your computer in two: One best shot selected from each motive as one sample, and the remaining in another sample.

– F. Compare the two groups of photos, and reflect on what you have learned.

If you apply what you have learned you will increase your own satisfaction with your photography because you will be able to create much more memorable photographs and your digital photo shows will be much more appreciated by your guests, friends and family.

Algorithms are extremely useful techniques to initiate any analytical model and every data scientist’s knowledge would be considered incomplete without the algorithms. The powerful and advanced techniques like Factor Analysis and Discriminant Analysis should be present in every data scientist’s arsenal. But for this type of advanced techniques, one must know some of the basic algorithms that are equally useful and productive. Since machine learning is one of the aspects where data science is used greatly, therefore, the knowledge of such algorithms is crucial. Some of the basic and most used algorithms that every data scientist must know are discussed below.

Hypothesis Testing

Though not an algorithm, without knowing this, a data scientist would be incomplete. No data scientist must move forward without mastering this technique. Hypothesis testing is a procedure for testing statistical results and checking if the hypothesis is true or false on the basis of statistical data. Then, depending on the hypothetical testing, it is decided whether to accept the hypothesis or simply reject it. Its importance lies in the fact that any event can be important. So, to check whether an event occurring is important or just a mere chance, hypothesis testing is carried out.

Linear Regression

Being a statistical modeling technique, it focuses on the relationship between a dependent variable and an explanatory variable by matching the observed values with the linear equation. Its main use is to depict a relationship between various variables by using scatterplots (plotting points on a graph by displaying two kinds of values). If no relationship is found, that means matching the data with the regression model doesn’t provide any useful and productive model.

Clustering Techniques

It is a type of unsupervised algorithm wherein a dataset is assembled in distinguished and distinct clusters. Since the output of the procedure is not known to the analyst, it is classified as an unsupervised learning algorithm. It means that the algorithm itself will define the result for us and we do not require to train it on any past inputs. Further, the clustering technique is divided into two types: Hierarchical and Partitional Clustering.

Naive Bayes

A simple, yet so powerful algorithmic technique for predictive modeling. This model consists of two kinds of probability to be calculated on the basis of training data. The first probability is each classes’ probability and the second one is that given each value (say ‘x’), the conditional probability is calculated for each class. After the calculations of these probabilities, predictions can be carried out for new data values using Bayes Theorem.

Naive Bayes make an assumption for each input variable to be independent, so it is sometimes also referred to as ‘naive’. Though it is a powerful assumption and not realistic for real data, it is very effectual for large scale of complex problems.

Labeling Yourself With "Binge Eating Disorder", "Compulsive Overeating Disorder" or "Food Addiction"

Nearly every self-help book or article I’ve read on binge eating disorder or food addiction has a section to help the reader decide if he or she really has binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating disorder or is a «food addict».

Often there’s a checklist with questions like, «Do you eat more than you intended more than 3 times per week?» Or «Do you hide how much you eat?»

These books or articles are often written by someone that has no personal experience with binge eating, or by people who believe in addictive disease. By asking questions like this, in their opinion, they’re setting you up to conclude you have a problem.

In my own opinion, I prefer to take an opposite angle: if you aren’t sure you have a problem with eating, you probably don’t. If you do have a problem or struggle with it, you’re aware of it.

I am not going to post information or spend time in my books or programs teaching you what binge eating, compulsive overeating or food addiction is. It’s different for everyone. If you feel you have a problem, you are well aware that you need to seek support for it. It would be arrogant of me to label you as someone that has a problem if you strongly believe you do not.

However, if you’re reading this and suspect you have an issue with overeating regularly, then you likely do have an issue to address.

I’m guessing your assumption is based on your experience with overeating food on a fairly regular basis, or often thinking that you know you’ll «cave in» and feel like you can’t stop eating.

You’re probably engaged in an internal debate about what to do: to eat less at certain times, to try to find a diet with food that you won’t want to overeat, to eat «safe» foods only in case you do overeat, etc. This conflict or indecision fits my definition of having an «issue» with food such that it’s not making you happy.

When learning about symptoms of binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating disorder, it can be easy to take on the label of «disorder» and see yourself as someone that’s afflicted with a «disorder.»

Why?

Because taking on the concept that you have a disorder and your binge eating is a symptom of it, a great responsibility can be lifted from your shoulders.

I remember thinking this when I was dealing with anorexia, and later bulimia, and then binge eating. I saw myself as someone with a disorder I would have to deal with for the rest of my life. It was this «thing» that was a part of me and required constant management.

Taking on this idea that I had a lifelong eating «disorder» that merely had changed forms, no longer did it seem like I was behaving stupidly and blindly. No longer did I feel an urgent need to quit binge eating, or to beat myself up for being weak. I was simply doing what people with eating disorders do.

While it’s certainly helpful to recognize if you have a problem with food, there’s a step that follows that will be what keeps you stuck or helps you overcome the issue: taking action. By seeing that there’s something that doesn’t make you happy, you now have a world of possibilities that can open up because you can choose to take new actions that WILL lead to you being happy.

You can work on developing your ability to recognize your conflicting thoughts around wanting to eat and wanting to feel in control. Those conflicting thoughts are the result of two parts of your brain in conflict… your «primal» animal brain and your «higher» logical brain.

When you can distinguish between the two parts and understand the motivations behind each, you quickly gain leverage on yourself and can overcome the behavior you are unhappy with.
