The End of Pre Season As We Know It

When I was young I remember seeing pre season as a chance to watch my team shape up against the greatest side’s featuring the greatest players in the land. Supporting a lower league team (now sadly a non-league team) the opportunities to watch this calibre of player were few and far between, perhaps the odd run in a cup competition would lead to a draw against a top flight powerhouse, however there was more chance of spotting top players in the annual run of pre season games. The top sides warmed up for their season by trying out new players and new systems, as well as blooding youngsters and bringing established players back to full fitness against lower league opposition from within their shores. Not only were their the above mentioned benefits to the top clubs, but in addition the benefits to the lower league clubs was perhaps immeasurable, a chance for lesser players to perform against the best, also an opportunity for fans to watch top draw football as their hype for the new season grows amongst blind loyalty. I remember only too well the thoughts of «This is going to be our year, we looked against Manchester united for the last half hour» and «If we play like that every week we will walk this league, we created Liverpool some genuine problems today»

Sadly this pre season paints a different picture. Tonight Blue Square Premier leagues side Wrexham advertise a match against «a Liverpool XI», the giveaway as to the standard of team on show is in the naming of the «Liverpool XI» it is highly likely that this will be a scratch side made up of promising youngsters and foreign trialists, possibly none of which will be known names to the local crowd. The star studded Liverpool first team including Gerrard, Carragher, Torres and Cole is in Austria for their pre season training camp and early practice matches. Meanwhile with Manchester United having a similar trip in the United States and foreign ventures for Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City among others it is clear that the direction of pre season for the top sides is to look abroad and not at home.

So why have the Premier League’s finest taken this approach to such an important part of their season preparations? Some may point to the benefits of training in warmer foreign climates, even at Altitude in some cases. Other muted benefits are the team morale gained by taking a squad away together so they are forced to live and entertain together not simply train together then go home. Surely the biggest benefit is financial. The popularity of the English Premier League all around the year is immense and the traditional pre season exhibition games all over Asia have proved economically rewarding to the top sides with big match fees being coupled with sales of club merchandise to the many fans of the game. Whilst current pre season schedules is a natural step for the modern game I can’t help missing the old style of pre season which pitched the top English sides against those in the lower leagues and gave us fans a chance to dream of what might be in the season ahead.

Footballer Profile – Robinho

Robson de Souza – known throughout the footballing world as Robinho – was perhaps the biggest surprise addition to Manchester City’s squad in their much publicised quest to enter British football’s elite. When the Brazilian signed from Real Madrid on the last day of the transfer window in the summer of 2008, it made everyone aware of the seriousness of the new club owners’ intentions. This was a genuine superstar coming to the City of Manchester Stadium.

Robinho has always been earmarked for great things – even the incomparable Pelé eulogised about him as a fifteen year old. Playing for the famous Santos club which the legendary Pelé had represented for so long, ‘Robi’, who had been born in Sao Paulo in 1984, quickly became their goalscoring talisman. The kidnapping from her home of his mother in the 2004/05 season, though, had a real impact on his life – even though she was released unharmed it then seemed inevitable that he would leave the country and join other prominent Brazilian players in Europe. At the end of the 2004/05 season, the player was named as the World Soccer Young Player of the Year.

The move came in July, 2005, when Robinho signed for Real, going on to score 10 goals in his first season. Although his undoubted skill was always evident at this time, it was also clear the player was having difficulties adapting to life, and the different style of football, at his new club. With Fabio Capello and, later, Bernd Schuster, Robinho was never really a regular starter for the Spanish team, even though he continued to be in the Brazil team.

The player’s time in Spain came to a distasteful conclusion. Madrid tried to include Robinho as a ‘makeweight’ in the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, against the player’s wishes. When the deal fell through and the Madrid hierarchy decided to offer him a new contract, Robinho refused it.

Despite looking as if he was about to sign for Chelsea, Robinho ended up at Eastlands and Manchester City, seemingly encouraged to join the club because they already had two other Brazilians on the books, Elano and Jo.

Since signing for Manchester City, Robinho has become very popular with the supporters – a popularity helped when he was seen with his wife going into the city on a bus! Many critics felt, during his first season, that his performances were very much better in games at Eastlands than in matches played away from home. Despite this, he scored 15 goals in 41games. This season, however, with the squad having been greatly boosted with the acquisition of more high class players, Robinho has been the victim of a bad ankle injury picked up playing for Brazil and so has missed most of the fixtures.

With Brazil, Robinho remains an important member of the team, scoring 19 goals so far in his 71 internationals, and he is almost certain to be integral in Brazil’s attempts to win the World Cup in South Africa in the summer.

For whom Robinho will be playing then is really anybody’s guess! Ever since his arrival, it seems he has been linked with moves away. Manchester City continually deny that he is on his way to Barcelona, Chelsea or any other number of clubs. City fans, certainly, will be hoping to see the skilful little striker linking up with Adebayor and Tevez to help the club realise their ambitions and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Who Knows? If they do succeed, then perhaps Robinho might be there again next season.

The Most Surprising Soccer Transfer of the Season

Twice a year when the transfer window opens, the soccer world goes crazy with players changing clubs and newspapers and soccer websites all over the world speculating on the latest superstars playing the game of musical chairs.

While some big name transfers such as Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to Real Madrid finally came to their expected conclusions, one transfer caught my eye this season. That of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move from Italian champions Inter Milan to Spanish and Champions League winners Barcelona, with Samuel Eto’o going the opposite direction.

Now, Ibrahimovic is not a bad player and on his day can be one of the best players on the planet. But he has failed to live up to his massive hype in my opinion. Who can forget the 2 Champions League matches against Manchester United last season where he was virtually anonymous?

Samuel Eto’o on the other hand has proven himself to be one of the most lethal strikers in the world. Only 28, he has his best years ahead of him and unlike Ibrahimovic, doesn’t choke on the big stage. Don’t forget, it was his goal in last season’s Champions League final that started Barcelona on the road to victory.

On top of the player exchange, Inter Milan also received a transfer fee of 45 million Euros. I have no idea how it was done, but Inter manager Jose Mourinho must surely have negotiated the best deal of the season. Or does Barcelona know something that we don’t? Only time will tell.

How Has Manchester Changed Over the Years?

Some cities in the world are famous due to their many distinctive qualities from the other cities like the presence of big universities, a number of national and international restaurants with appetizing food, luxurious and moderate hotels, a large number of shopping opportunities and fame in sports. Manchester is among those well-known cities which not only grasps the tourists’ attention but also the interests of people living all over the world for residential purposes. It is the second largest city of UK and is also called ‘Capital of the North’. There are many museums, theaters, bars, clubs, and galleries for you to visit and keep you happy.

In the late 1700s, Manchester was a small village with a minimal population. However, over the years it has grown into a metropolitan city. Manchester has developed incredibly since then. The Manchester Airport serves Manchester and North West England and has the most passengers outside London in UK. Manchester now also has a very well spread and developed railway network. Manchester Piccadilly is the busiest English train station other than London.

Manchester is now becoming a city where people are choosing to settle. Once it had a bad reputation resulting from its industrial past. However, the scenario has drastically changed over the past decade and now Manchester has a lively, exciting air. Many people conceive it as a young, vibrant and thrilling city, where there is always something happening. In fact, many perceive Manchester as a rival to London.

Old Manchester was much expensive in terms of living, studying and shopping. However, now due to the presence of shopping malls and shops in large number, the commodities are available at affordable rates. The five star luxurious hotels are still expensive, but some are offered within your limits. Manchester is also developing in terms of construction and beauty as many buildings and parks are now constructed there. Construction of new architectural and exciting buildings has provided a charm for the tourists.

In the past, there was only one big university in the city where thousands of students of different countries were getting education, but now Manchester has many big universities with well-recognised degrees around the world. It has got a prominence and fame in learning and education.

The city has made good use of historical buildings to attract tourists and modern art can be spot throughout the city as well. New flagship stores, tall glass shops and new hotels are the gems of Manchester.

In sports, Manchester United is famous in football; it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world due to its sports and tactics. Throughout the years, the Millennium and the Commonwealth games have prompted on a huge uplift to the city. It is regarded as the centre of football with two most popular teams Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manchester is becoming more modernised in terms of industrialisation as well. It has an industrial past with the textile industry of mills and goods provided to other states through canals and shipping. It was named as the best place for business in UK in a poll. Manchester offers many opportunities for work and jobs.

This city has therefore come a long way from a mere village over the past. Many people find it a perfect place not only to visit but to settle also.

New Designs For Football Shirts Make the Preseason Exciting

Every season there is an almost audible buzz about what the new designs for football shirts will look like. Which team will look better? Which team will look worse? Will teams go with old fashioned shirts, or will they try new cutting edge designs? The speculation adds excitement to the preseason and keeps people guessing until the very last minute.

This year the most talked about new design is for Manchester United’s away shirt. Photos of their new shirts have been passed around the internet and they are not getting favorable reviews. The shirts are white with a large V pattern in red across the chest. With a lace-up top and the logo shoved off to the side of the V, these throwback shirts are being hailed as a design nightmare. Football fans are even joking that Manchester United players will all request transfers because of the hideous new shirt design.

There is also a psychological aspect to new designs for football shirts. For example, there are rumors that Arsenal plan to change their shirt colors from yellow to green this season. That change makes fans a little squeamish because the last time the Arsenal used green shirts they finished in a dismal 10th place. Unfortunately the Arsenal away shirts look more like something an official would wear with light pinstripes and a small ribbed collar.

Some of the new designs for football shirts this year show a strange robotech type of effect. The illusion of body armor is stitched into the shoulders and midriff of the new Chelsea shirts. The blue and white design is nice, but the addition of a zipper at the neckline seems unusual for a football shirt. This year’s Blackburn Rovers home shirt and Chelsea third shirt are brilliant examples of traditional football shirts. The Blackburn Rovers will wear a large blue and white checkerboard pattern trimmed with red, which is interesting while conservative. Chelsea’s third shirt is classic football with alternating light and dark blue stripes on the torso and dark blue sleeves. The bright yellow accents finish the design nicely.

The many different uniforms that football teams wear throughout the season can be a challenge when creating new designs for football shirts. The teams need home shirts, away shirts, and some have third shirts as well. The home and away shirts are strikingly different from one another, and no team would be satisfied to have just the same shirt in a different color. Each team strives for individuality, and sometimes creativity wins out over good taste.

Fans, however, will support their teams whatever design they wear. Even when a team’s new shirt design is horrid, you will find bleachers filled with rabid football fans that are proud to wear the same tasteless shirt their heroes wear on the field. New designs for football shirts add variety and interest to the game, and give fans something to look forward to every year as the season approaches. While the design of the uniform is not as important as the players who wear the uniforms, sometimes it can be just as interesting.
