Red Bull Salzburg extended their unbeaten home record in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) to five matches after a closely-contested 1-1 draw with AC Milan at the Red Bull Arena.

Still experiencing euphoria after a 3-2 victory over arch-footballing adversaries Inter Milan in the Derby Della Madonnina, Stefano Pioli’s side managed to fight their way back into the match shortly before HT. Alexis Saelemaekers scored his first goal in the competition when he took a clinical touch in the area before unleashing a sublime strike into the bottom left-hand corner.

Making their fourth successive appearance in the UCL group stages, the hosts began proceedings in the second half how they had started the first in the second half, as Fernando’s frustration was clear to see after firing aimlessly wide. In pursuit of their first back-to-back UCL away victories since 2009, AC Milan were inches away from taking the lead when one of Stefano Pioli’s earlier hat-trick of substitutions, Tommaso Pobega, fired fractions wide of the right-hand post.

However, despite dominating possession in the concluding stages, the Rossoneri were left to settle for a point, extending their unbeaten record against Austrian opposition in European encounters to six matches. Meanwhile, a credible share of the spoils in front of a sold-out Red Bull Arena increases Salzburg’s unbeaten tenure across all competitions to seven games.
