Famous Quotes by Vince Lombardi During Football’s Annual Bowl Season

College football’s annual bowl season is full of surprises and spectacular moments. Famous coaches have had some memorable remarks about American’s most popular sport, and here are some of them by legendary Green Bay Packer coach Vince Lombardi, who many consider to be the best of the best.

Lombardi’s head coaching record in the National Football League was second to none. In 9 years with the Green Bay Packers, Lombardi’s regular season won-loss percentage was 73% (96-34-6), his postseason was 90% (9-1) and his total was 75% (105-35-6).

He took a 1-10-1 team in 1958 to an NFL title in 3 years, and went on to win 5 NFL titles in 9 years (1961, 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1967) and three titles consecutively. He led the Packers to the first two Super Bowl titles in 1966 and 1967.

Lombardi’s discipline was legendary. A lifelong Catholic, he spent 4 years in Cathedral Preparatory Seminary to become a Catholic priest before becoming a standout football player at St. Francis Preparatory High School.

An undersized guard at 5 foot 8 and 185 pounds, he was offered and accepted a football scholarship to Fordham University in the Bronx to play for «Sleepy» Jim Crowley, one of the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame in the 1920s. He would become part of the «Seven Blocks of Granite» that held Fordham’s opponents scoreless several times during a 25-game winning streak.

After coaching at Fordham, Lombardi became the offensive line coach for West Point under another legendary head coach, Colonel Red Blaik. Lombardi then became the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, working with defensive coordinator Tom Landry and head coach Jim Lee Howell, before becoming Green Bay’s head coach in 1959.

Lombardi was 59 years old when he died of cancer in 1970. Grown men and Hall of Fame football players openly wept at his funeral.

Here are some of Vince Lombardi’s best known quotes:

«If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?»

«I firmly believe than any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious.»

«There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay and I never want to finish second again.»

«Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.»

«Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence.»

«The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.»

«Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser.»

«Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.»

«If you can accept losing, you can’t win.»

«Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.»

«Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.»

«Success demands singleness of purpose.»

«It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.»

«It’s easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you’re a winner, when you’re number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you’re not a winner.»

«The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.»

«We didn’t lose the game; we just ran out of time.»

«Teamwork is what the Green Bay Packers are all about. They didn’t do it for individual glory. They did it because they loved one another.»

«The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.»

«Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate.»

Here are some quotes by Lombardi’s players:

«When Lombardi said ‘sit down,’ we didn’t look for a chair.» – Forrest Gregg, Hall of Fame tackle.

«He prepared us so well, and he motivated us so well, I felt he was a part of me on the field.» Fuzzy Thurston.

«He pushed you to the end of your endurance and then beyond it. And if there was reserve there, well, he found that too.» Henry Jordan, Hall of Fame defensive tackle.

«He made us better than we thought we could be.» Jerry Kramer.

«Coach Lombardi showed me that by working hard and using my mind, I could overcome my weakness to the point that I could be one of the best.» Bart Starr, Hall of Fame quarterback.

«The fear in my mind was not him but that for some reason I would not be a part of the team and be with this man.» Forrest Gregg.

«He made you a believer. He told you what the other team was going to do, and he told you what you had to do to beat them, and invariably he was right.» Willie Davis, Hall of Fame defensive back.

(Editor’s Note: I have read and studied one of the best biographies on Lombardi: When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss, I highly recommend his book as a great read.)

Barnsley FC – Neil Redfearn, A Midfield General

Arguably Barnsley’s most influential and talented footballer, Neil Redfearn was instrumental in helping the Tykes achieve promotion to the English Premier League in 1997.

Redfearn’s career stretched from 1982 to 2008, he played 851 games and scored 176 goals. He started is long career at Bolton Wanderers but it was a move from Oldham Athletic to Barnsley in 1991 that catapulted him to new heights. Redfearn had a great match day engine and having all the traits required of a good quality midfielder he was given the club captaincy as well as becoming the regular penalty taker for the club. In an era where drinking was not discouraged and an athletes diet was not as strict as it is today, Redfearn rarely missed a game through injury or illness.

Sat in the second tier of English football, manager Danny Wilson began to assemble a Barnsley team that was able to challenge for a place in English football’s holy grail, the Premier League. Clint Marcelle, Andy Liddell, Paul Wilkinson, Matty Appelby and John Hendrie all came into Wilson’s side in the search for promotion.

In the 1996/97 season Redfearn as ever lead by example. His superb attitude on and off the field was admired by everyone associated with the club. Barnsley got off to a terrific start to the season winning their first five games. The Tykes would only win one of their next eight drawing five and losing two. The Midfield-General was setting his standards high on the pitch, talking with his feet he had already scored eight league goals going into the middle of November.

A double winning season over rivals Sheffield United and a 2-0 home win against Manchester City helped Wilson’s men secure second place and automatic promotion to the Premier League. It was Redfearn’s and Barnsley’s finest hour. The club captain missed just one game all season and scored 17 goals, he was a club hero.

The Premier League was not a success for the Tykes, relegation lead to the departure of Wilson to rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Redfearn left for £1 million to Chartlton Athletic. Redfearn scored a brace in a controversial 3-2 home defeat to Liverpool. He showed that he had the ability to play in the top tier of English football.

In what was a colourful career, Redfearn was a superb servant to the game. He knew where the back of the net was. There are plenty of managers up and down the country that would love to have a player of Redfearn’s ability, commitment and professionalism amongst their ranks today.

Kickers Are Weird

I was a sports broadcaster for 35 years, mostly covering the National Football League. I learned a lot of things in that time, but one thing stands out, and I’m going to share it with you now:

Kickers are weird

Go back and read it again, several times.

I put it in big type for a reason. It’s true! And you have to understand it. Kickers are very, very weird people.

Whole generations of NFL fans have grown up not knowing what a «straight-on» kicker looks like. Well, a straight-on kicker didn’t angle into the ball like today’s soccer-style kickers. He ran straight at the ball and kicked it straight toward the goalpost, wearing a shoe with a special hard, square toe in it. I know this is a foreign concept for some of you younger people, but bear with an old man for a moment.

The NFL record for field goal distance is still held by a straight-on kicker who actually had a deformed foot and had to wear a specially fitted shoe: Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints for sixty-three yards (since tied by Denver’s Jason Elam, for you stat freaks).

Another old-time NFL kicker, Ben Agajanian, also had a deformed foot and a special shoe. After his playing days, Ben became a respected teacher of the kicking arts. One of his pupils once asked Ben, «How can I get a kicking shoe like yours?»

«Well,» Ben said, «first you get a lawnmower…»

In the mid-1960s, the Gogolak brothers, Pete and Charley, came into the NFL, the first soccer-style kickers. And unlike the hulking, straight-on guys, they were smaller. And foreign. And they didn’t know much about football, American style. Stories abound of their running off the field after a successful kick shouting, «I keek touchdown!»

The last of the straight-ons, the Redskins’ Mark Moseley, retired in 1986. It’s been soccer style since then.

And kickers are weird in more than just the angle they take to the ball. They do strange things with their shoes. I was interviewing the Cowboys’ Chris Boniol back in the nineties, and he let it slip that he broke in his kicking shoes by soaking them in near-scalding water, while his foot was inside them. This, he said, made the leather conform to the shape of his foot. But that wasn’t the really weird part.

The really weird part is that Boniol wore a size nine street shoe. On the field, he wore a size seven!

«Wait a minute,» I said. «You take a size nine street shoe but you wear a size seven kicking shoe? How do you get your foot in there?»

«You just kind of wedge it in.»

«Doesn’t it hurt? Don’t your toes get all cramped?»

«Doesn’t matter,» Boniol said. He wanted it to feel like his shoe was just another part of his foot-one skin, so to speak. And since he was a co-holder of the record for most field goals in one game (seven-since broken), who was I to argue?

Will Anyone Be Able to Dethrone Alabama This Year?

Although there are still quite a few undefeated schools at this midpoint in the college football season, there is one university that stands head and shoulders above all the others: Alabama. The Crimson Tide has won the last two BCS National Championships and looks just as capable of winning it again this year. While some people predicted that the team would suffer after losing 9 key players to the NFL Draft, including the majority of their offensive line, the team just keeps rolling along with big victories.

Although Alabama plays in the dreaded SEC, their schedule is looking quite soft. If they can win a major matchup against LSU in a couple weeks, and win the SEC Championship in December, Alabama will likely be headed to another BCS National title game. And who would possibly be talented enough to stop this team from a third straight title?

Oregon looks capable offensively, but everyone knows what typically happens when they go up against a legitimate SEC defense. Clemson is a strong team, but we’ve all witnessed their slip-ups against minor colleges. Ohio State may return to the title game as well, though I still don’t see them as really being able to beat the Crimson Tide. Nick Saban has instituted a program that is unstoppable.

Losing leading running back Eddie Lacy was supposed to cause a disruption in the team’s offense. Enter TJ Yeldon, Kenyan Drake, and Jalston Fowler. The defensive backfield was supposed to become problematic following Dee Milliner’s departure to the NFL. Well, now safety Vinnie Sunseri sparks fear into opposing quarterbacks, having returned 2 interceptions for touchdowns, including a game-clincher from Johnny Manziel.

The team simply reloads every year, and their coaches get every recruit trained to the fullest of their capabilities, making Alabama the most fearsome and talented college football team in America. And after so much success, teams now legitimately fear this team, which further adds to their strength. They play with confidence and dominance, and haven’t been challenged since their thriller against Texas A&M.

Looking ahead, their schedule really is quite soft. Perhaps the game at Auburn to close out the season could be a potential slip-up, but I would be greatly surprised.

Another factor going in the team’s favor is the leadership under senior quarterback AJ McCarron. While some critics point to the fact that the talent around him boosts his stats, McCarron has done everything that has been asked of him and makes very few mistakes. He can make all the necessary throws and is surely going to be given an opportunity in the NFL.

Therefore, I really don’t think anyone is capable of dethroning Alabama this year. But I could be wrong. College football is all about strange upsets, and the team might even fall to Arkansas this week. But this is where Saban’s coaching comes in to play. Alabama players always come into games focused and ready to win, no matter who is the opponent. They never seem to slip up against the teams they should beat, and their success stems from this intensity. Something tells me Alabama might just be celebrating another National Championship at the end of this season yet again.

Blind Side Head Coach Gets His Dream Job

Who will ever forget Sandra Bullock’s constant grumbling to coach Burt Cotton in the Academy Award winning film The Blind Side? The story of Michael Oher and his journey to the NFL is heartwarming and, now, it might be time to start on a sequel. Coach Cotton in the movie is really coach Hugh Freeze, a native Mississipian who today landed his dream job as he was named the new head football coach at the University of Mississippi.

Freeze, a graduate of Southern Mississippi in 1992, got his first coaching job at Briarcrest Christian School (the real name of the movie’s Wingate Christian School) that very same year. He was the team’s offensive coordinator and defensive backs coach before being named the head coach in 1995. Freeze won two state titles (2002 and 2004) at Briarcrest and was named the Region 8-AA Coach of the Year five times and the Associated Press Coach of the Year six times.

Freeze then followed his standout offensive lineman, Oher, the Mississippi where, in 2005, he became an assistant athletic director for football external affairs. The next season he would become the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, positions he held until 2007 when then head coach Ed Orgeron was let go. In 2008 Freeze found himself coaching at NAIA Lambuth University (TN) where he went 20-5 in two seasons including an 11-0 perfect regular season in 2009. The school went to its first playoff game in 11 years and finished the year at 12-1 and the sixth-ranked team in all of NAIA.

In 2010 Freeze joined the coaching staff at Arkansas State as offensive coordinator and after Steve Roberts resigned at the end of the season, Freeze was named the new head coach. The Red Wolves have thrived under Freeze’s potent spread offense, but, surprisingly, have been very good on defense as well, ranking 15th in the country in scoring defense yielding 19.3 points per game.

Freeze inherits a team that did not win an SEC game this year, going 0-8 in the conference and 2-10 overall, one of the wins versus FCS (formerly Div. I-AA) Southern Illinois. With a defense ranked near the bottom of FBS in several categories and an offense that is not much better, the task ahead will be mighty, but Freeze has won everywhere he has been. He is busy putting together his staff and reportedly his receivers coach Grant Heard and his defensive line coach Chris Kiffin will follow him from Arkansas State to their new home at Ole Miss.
