An Interview With Erotic Romance Author Nadia Aidan, Author of ENTHRALLED

Nadia Aidan lives, works and writes on the East Coast in the United States. Under her real name, she holds a PhD in Political Science and Public Policy and by day she works as an Assistant Professor. In addition to writing erotic romances, Nadia enjoys reading other authors, playing flag football, studying muay thai, working out, listening to music, and scuba diving.

Her other interests include collecting Top Cow comics, especially Witchblade and Tomb Raider. She loves professional football and soccer. Her favorite teams are the Washington Redskins and Manchester United, respectively. Nadia loves watching, reading about, and writing about strong, assertive heroines which is why she is an enduring fan of Fight Girls, Xena, Buffy, and La Femme Nikita!

Thank you for giving us this interview, Nadia. Can we start out by having you tell us whether you are published for the first time or are you multi-published?

Enthralled is my debut novel and my first published work of fiction.

What was the name of your very first book regardless of whether it was published or not and, if not published, why?

Sweet Revenge is the name of the very first book. It has gone through extensive revisions and is currently under review so it looks like it will get published after all!

For your first published book, how many rejections did you go through before you either found a mainstream publisher, self-published it, or paid a vanity press to publish it?

Enthralled was never submitted to a publishing house. I wanted to self-publish the first novel that I released to the public. However, the first novel I wrote, Sweet Revenge, was rejected by one publishing house and then received a revise and resubmit. As I said before it is currently under review again, having been revised; However, this ALL came after Enthralled was already in the publication pipeline.

How did the rejections make you feel and what did you do to overcome the blows?

Well my day job involves A LOT of rejection so I am used to it! As an Assistant Professor it can sometimes take as long as TWO years to get just one article published – of course after dozens of rejection letters! I see the process of trying to get fiction works published as no different. A rejection sucks no matter what but you have to push it aside and trudge ahead. If you don't believe in your book then nobody else will so when you get a rejection, I recommend that first you burn the letter, go out and have a drink with your friends that night, and then get back to trying to get that book published!

When your first book was published, who published it and why did you choose them?

iUniverse published Enthralled. iUniverse was chosen over other self publishing / vanity houses because it is professional and efficient and I found that their goals were in line with mine regarding how I wanted to publish and market my book.

How did it make you feel to become published for the first time and how did you celebrate?

It was an amazing feeling – still is! You have this tremendous sense of accomplishment when you see something that you have been working on for a long time FINALLY in print. Seeing the book published was celebration enough!

What was the first thing you did as for as promotion when you were published for the first time?

First I sent several copies to reviewers then I listed myself on popular romance writing sites such as, Author Island, Night Owl Romance, Love Bites Romance and Coffee Times Romance where I made sure that I was listed as a featured or debut author.

If you had to do it over again, would you have chosen another route to be published?

Not at all! In the future I would like to do all those important things that fiction novelists can do like secure an agent, publishing with a royalty paying publisher and negotiate an advance! BUT this time I wanted to do this on my own. I wanted to see how successful I could be with no big publishing house backing me.

Have you been published since then and how have you grown as an author?

Enthralled was JUST released so no. Although, I do have three novellas currently under review and I entered one of my excerpts from another novella into the Brava Novella Contest. I am convinced that being productive has made me grow leaps and bounds as an author. The more I write the better I get. Mainly because I am forced to be more creative in how I structure my stories and the ideas that I base them upon.

Looking back since the early days when you were trying to get published, what do you think you could have done differently to speed things up? What kind of mistakes could you have avoided?

The biggest mistake I made was not hiring an editor at the very beginning – long before the fifth or sixth draft which is when I did it! I believe that if I hired an editor after maybe my second draft that I would have saved myself a lot of time and money in the end, not to mention the added frustration that came with it!

What has been the biggest accomplishment you have achieved since becoming published?

Seeing the novel receive good reviews has turned out to represent a tremendous accomplishment to me. And while I don't believe good reviews are validate my work, it does make me feel like at least there is SOMEONE out there who enjoyed reading my book and if there is one then maybe there are others!

If you could have chosen another profession, what would that profession be?

Well, BESIDES taking Halle Berry's job and ENTIRE life, there isn't anything else that I would rather be doing.

Would you give up being an author for that profession or have you combined the best of both worlds?

Fortunately I don't have to make that choice. Academia is very flexible and allows me the summers, winter break and many, many hours where I can write AND still get my other work done. To be honest, I don't see myself having to give up being an author BUT if I was forced to make a choice then I would walk away from academia in a heartbeat because writing is what I truly love.

How do you see yourself in ten years?

First of all I intend to be a TENURED professor by then. Once I get tenure I will have even more time to devote to my writing career! And as far as that is concerned I hope to have an agent and a multi book contract with a publishing house. In ten years I would like to see myself as a household name in the erotic romance genre.

Any final words for writers who dream of being published one day?

The first thing those who are interested in publishing should do is simply WRITE the book. I meet many people who say they want to be an author but when I ask them how their book is going I am disappointed to hear that they aren't even writing! I know it is hard to find the time and energy to sit down and do it but you have to if you want to see your work published. Also, if you are interested in becoming an author but you're not quite ready to sit down and write or submit your work then you should try to become familiar with your market and your genre. Even before I committed to publishing my book I was learning about my market by attending conferences and joining listservs and romance writing organizations. I also made sure that I kept up with market trends and became an avid consumer of new releases so that I would know what was out there. However, in the end the first step is to simply believe in your passion and the other stuff will eventually fall into place.

Why Louisville Would Be A Great Fit For An NFL Team

The NFL is a league that loves to expands to new and untapped markets within the United States. There are many major cities out there in the U.S. that can make that argument that they are deserving of a new NFL franchise should the NFL decide to expand or relocate one of their current franchises. This article will discuss why Louisville would be a great fit for an NFL team.

Louisville Has A Solid Sports History And Culture

Louisville has a long history with sports. First of all, Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby which is a well attended and watched event on television. Second, Louisville is home to the Louisville Slugger which is a popular brand of baseball bat used by several prominent baseball players. Third, the University of Louisville Cardinals have solid basketball and football programs year in and year out.

Louisville has also been home to some of the greatest legends. One of these legends is Muhammad Ali who would go on to become one of the best boxers ever. Another individual from Louisville is Johnny Unitas who would go on to become one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. There are many other sports figures who are from Louisville but there are too many to be put on this list.

Louisville would certainly be a good fit for an NFL team. One might make the argument that college sports dominate the landscape in Louisville, which certainly is true. However, since the NFL schedule is usually played on Sunday afternoons, it would not be hard to accommodate both the collegiate sports schedules and the Louisville NFL team. In fact, the addition of an NFL team in Louisville would bolster the already solid sports history and culture of Louisville and give the sports fans there another team to cheer for.

Having An NFL Team In Louisville Is Good For The Neighboring Television Markets And Sports Markets

As with any expansion or relocation of a team to a new city, one of the biggest factors is the neighboring markets which the team would expand to. In this case, placing an NFL team in Louisville would reach out to the entire state of Kentucky, southern Indiana, and southern Illinois. If the team is successful in their first few years, they would be able to reach out farther.

It is true that there are other NFL teams which compete in those markets. For example, the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans reach into Kentucky. The Indianapolis Colts reach into southern Indiana. The St. Louis Rams reach into southern Illinois. The Louisville NFL team would have to face competition from those teams in terms of reaching out into the desired markets.

However, I would argue that this competition is a good thing because it encourages fans in those areas to become more active in terms of which team to cheer for and would force the neighboring teams to field a better product in order to keep Louisville from claiming those fans. Louisville in turn would do its best to field a solid team to gain a stronghold into states such as Indiana, Illinois, and Tennessee which have solid sports cultures in their own right. It’s a win-win situation for the NFL and the fans in those markets.

The Best Strategy Using the 4-2-5 Defense

The 4-2-5 Defense is basically the same as the 4-4 Defense except that we will be calling the two Outside Linebackers as the Strong Safety and the Weak Safety. Otherwise, there is no real difference between the 4-2-5 and the 4-4 defense. The following discussion will be about the base alignment of the 4-2-5.

On the Strong Side, we’re going to have a Tackle in a strong 3-Technique. Then we’re going to have an End at the 7 which is shaded inside the Tight End. If we’ve got a very good End, we could technically look like we’re strong enough.

We have the Mike Linebacker in a 30-Technique, outside shade of the Guard and 5 yards off the ball. This is where we’ll play A-gap.

The Strong Safety should be 3×3 off the End Man on the Line of Scrimmage (EMOLS). He’s our box player so he’ll run and we’re going to make sure that he’s going to force to play back to the inside.

On the Weak Side, we’ve got a Tackle in a 1-Technique. He’s going to handle the A-gap. Our Will Linebacker is going to be in a 30-Technique outside shade of the Guard. He’s going to handle the B-gap to his side. If we shift the two Tackles over, we can let Will run a 4-2-5 and give Mike a little more responsibility. These all depends on the types of players that we have.

Our End is going to be 50 outside shade of the Weak Side. Take your best athlete. You don’t need to know a lot and you don’t want to have to think too much. Put him on that Weak Side and then let him go. That’s a great spot to put somebody who is a great athlete. He may not be a true Defensive Lineman and may not be down to split double teams but he must be someone who can really run and can put pressure on the passer. We’re going to cut this guy loose and just let him go.

The Weak Safety is our box player on the Weak Side. The 4-2-5 defense is an 8-man front which means that we should be running some sort of a Cover 3 shell behind it as our base. Whether we’re running a one high, a man coverage, or a Cover 3, any of these is going to fit well with 4-2-5.

You can work things like a Cover 2 or Quarters Coverage with the 4-2-5 but it is not structurally setup for that. The simplest thing you can do is run a Cover 3. You could still adjust to all the formations when you get your doubles and your trips.

You’re going to have to take some time to teach the Weak Safety how to collision and carry a #2 receiver out there. You have to teach the Cornerback how to split two receivers running verticals in his zone.

So those are the techniques that you could teach. Since you’ll have to teach a whole lot of the Linemen, you’re going to have to work with the simple basics of the 4-2-5 defense.

Skills Every Player Should Acquire in Australian Football

The important way to start is to assess your own abilities I. e. work out your own weaknesses and then attempt to correct them. If there are attributes you don’t have such as height, strength and speed, then, to make up for this, try to develop your talents or football skills to the greatest extent you can.

This article was part of a booklet produced to fast track the football knowledge of schoolboy players about to represent their state at the All Australian National Schoolboys Australian Football Championships in 1973.

A good player must be able to do the following well:

1. Kick a ball with either foot accurately under pressure;

2. Handball with either hand at least ten metres;

3. Mark the ball overhead as well as on the chest;

(In modern football, the player needs to be able to mark the ball with arms outstretched in front of him).

4. Pick up the ball off the ground at speed in two hands.

5. Turn or dodge on either foot and be able to do a blind turn to avoid being tackled.

6. Bump effectively with hip and shoulder. Finally,

7. He must be physically fit, understand the rules correctly and be a team man.

Rucks must be able to:

1. Palm the ball with either hand effectively to their rovers (mid-fielders).

2. Ruck the ball from any position on his side of the circle.

3. Assess the bouncing and the throw-ins of the ball by the various umpires.

4. Play a kick behind the ball when it is in the forward line. Take the marks kicked out by opposition defenders and return with long kicks into the forward line. (This is the traditional role of a ruckman, one which is still important when introducing young players to the basic plays of our game).

5. Be extremely fit; yet able to anticipate the flow of the game to conserve energy.

6. Develop a complete understanding with the other ruckman and the rover (Today, we call them mid-fielders). They must be a team within a team.

Rovers:

1. Must give smart, quick, accurate delivery of the ball, particularly to his forwards.

2. Have exceptional ball control; be speedy around the packs and have speed off the mark.

3. Anticipate the flow of the game so that he can conserve energy and give maximum benefit to the team

Forwards must have:

1. Accuracy when kicking for goal;

2. Fast, sharp leading for the ball;

3. Accurate delivery to the full forward;

4. The ability to turn on both feet, but where possible to turn towards the goals.

5. The «ball/goal hungry» desire where necessary in getting the ball. But he must be a team man ensuring the man in the best position gets the chance to score the goal.

Backmen:

1. Must have an accurate, steady kick; solid marking ability; and good ball control.

2. Must be able to punch the ball away; bump with hip and shoulder; tackle fiercely to stop the ball moving on; or knock the ball out of the pack to the advantage of his team.

3. Must have coolness under pressure but still be «ball hungry».

4. Must have the ability to back his own judgment when going out to meet the ball.

5. Must concentrate on always being in front of his man I. e. between his man and the ball and inside his man forcing him to turn away from the goals.

Centre and wings, traditionally:

1. The qualities they need are a combination of those of the backs and forwards.

2. At different times, they must adopt both those roles, attacking and defending.

In the modern game, players involved at higher grades often fulfil multiple roles in a game. So to become a more useful player for your team look to develop the skills that you would require to fill multiple roles in your team.

Prospects of Newcastle in the 2007-2008 English Premier League

Without a doubt, the appointment of Sam Allarydce, Big Sam, as the new gaffer or manager for Newcastle for the 2007-2008 season had been greeted with cheers by the Toon Army. With his growing reputation of grooming of Bolton Wanderers that were challenging for Europe and giving the Big Four of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, it is widely expected that Newcastle would finally challenge for Europe at least.

In the off season, Big Sam has radically transformed his Newcastle squad; making wholesale changes to his team and molding it into his own image. Let take a closer view on the 2007-2008 squad below.

At the back, with Irish Number 1 Shay Given in goal, Newcastle is usually in safe hands. In front of him, there are the ever improving England U21 Steven Taylor and new recruit the Czech David Rozehnal, Newcastle has improved a previous weakness. Another indicator was the release of Craig Moore, Oliver Bernard, Alan O'brian and Titus Bramble from defense shows his determination to cut the dead wood from the team. Plus the transfer of or the addition of Geremi from Chelsea, Claudio Cacapa from Lyon, Jose Enrique from Villarreal and Habbib Beye from Marseille to the likes of Steve Carr, Peter Ramage and Celestine Babayaro, Big Sam has rebuilt up the defense and his options at the back.

As for midfield interestingly enough, Allardyce has allowed the likes of Kieran Dyer, Scott Parker and Nobby Solano to leave St James Park. These three players have been the main stay of previous Newcastle midfield. In came Joey Barton from Manchester City and Faye from Sam's old club Bolton. Looking at it, it could be a wise move on Big Sam's part as Dyer had his injuries, Solano is getting older in age and Parker may not be in his mold of a player. Furthermore, with exciting youngsters such James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia added with the experience of Nicky Butt, Emre and Damien Duff, Big Sam has a strong midfield to choose from for every match. Only concern is the addition of Barton may test his abilities to the fullest as he had been a problem player at City.

Up front, what more can be said of a front line of Micheal Owens, Mark Viduka from Boro, Alan Smith from Manchester United, Obafemi Martins and Shola Ameobi. A combination of youth and experience. The major concern of Allarydce would be the health of his strikers at his disposal especially Owen's. Without a doubt, with Viduka and Ameobi, Sam may be trying to play a big-small combination up front if Owen is fit.

So far the performance have been encouraging though the recent defeat to Derby away is a wrong step down. Newcastle is current in 10th position, winning 2, drawing 2 and losing 1. At the moment, Newcastle is a team in transition as Big Sam is still molding his teams to his ideals and playing styles. It can be strongly connected once the team is consolidated to the playing style of Big Sam and gotten used to each other, performance should improve.

It can safely be connected that Newcastle should be strongly challenging for a European Spot come end May 2008 with the current team and Big Sam's abilities.
