The Fields of Anfield Road (Fields of Athenry) LIVERPOOL FC – by Helen Marshall – Dracapalley

My arrangement of this much-loved Kop classic (set to the song ‘Fields of Athenry’) was aired on the LFC tv channel in April 2010 for the Hillsborough Memorial Service; an annual service to commemorate the lives of the 96 fans who were tragically killed at Hillsborough Stadium on 15th April 1989.
You will not be forgotten.

The Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it’s glory round the Fields of Anfield Road.

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the Redmen they are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play)
We had Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Beside the Hillsborough flame
I heard a Kopite mourning
Why so many taken on that day
Justice has never been done
But their memory will carry on
There’ll be glory round the fields of Anfield road

  1. So sweet and plaintive. It makes me weep to hear this. I also appreciate the masterful touch you have to coax the perfect sound from your great guitar. — What tuning might this be I wonder—

  2. Beautiful ! I´m a fingerstyle guitarplayer from Uruguay , The Land of Luis Suarez , and I became a big fan of Liverpool , I saw all the Match all the weekends . Tomorrow against SouthHamton , we still arrive in the eurozone !!!

  3. @Ballyhook – Yes, it is a great Irish tune. KOP may sometimes stand for 'King over Pope', but in the case of Liverpool FC, the Kop takes its name from the Afrikaans word meaning 'hill'. In 1906, a journalist for the Liverpool Echo newspaper described the swathes of people standing on the steepest stand as looking like the British soldiers that stood on the Spion Kop during the Boer War. Nothing whatsoever to do with religion, and also not the only club to name the main stand 'the Kop'.

  4. Dont know why the play this fantastic irish song at a prodastand football club. Afterall. K O P. Stands for king over pope. Beat not many knew tat

  5. Helen,
Your music reminds me of a time when I loved Liverpool F.C. I am not from the city and have no connection to it other than I love football, But something has changed, something is lost, the beauty that was bob paisley, daglish, rush has slowly disappeared so that today all that is left is overpaid machines. What do you feel about it? Did I see something that wasnt there?

  6. Very beautiful and very moving Helen – I'll never forget that day. I took some Liverpool fans to my house so they could phone home, then watched those dreadful scenes on TV. The report on the events of that day did not address certain crucial factors that were critical to the outcome.

  7. @isa2222 I've been a fan of Bensusan's since the mid-80's. Now I'm a fan of Helen Marshall's. This tune reminded me of the first time I heard "Nice Feeling". It gave me chills.

  8. That's a relief. I thought you had deleted this permanently. I listened to it yesterday several times and then later after I finished watching my television shows I tried to listen some more and it was gone. This is the best guitar tune I've heard in ages. Much better than any of the vocals I've listened to. I will send you my Leo Kottke model Taylor guitar, if you'll send me the sheet music (tab) for this. If I have to figure it out by ear, I'm sure I'll butcher it. Great job.
