14 Weird Pregnancy Facts

So let’s start off with the fact that pregnancy in general is a weird and exciting experience to go through. Isn’t it crazy to think that you’re growing another human being inside you? Mind blowing right? There’s this living creature inside of you moving around which is another crazy experience. I’ve heard people explaining what it supposedly feels like to have a baby move inside you when you really won’t understand until it’s actually happening to you. There are many more things you could possibly experience while being pregnant however, I only touched on a few.

1) When you get to be at about four months pregnant your little, innocent, baby begins urinating inside you! On average, your baby urinates at about a liter a day. Weird right? Oh it gets better! Your little one actually drinks the urine they are excreting!

2) At the end of your pregnancy, your placenta will produce the same amount of estrogen that a non-pregnant woman produces in three years’ time!

3) The longest pregnancy that resulted in a live birth belongs to Beulah Hunter which was 375 days. Nine months is long enough, can you imagine over a year of having that big belly and heartburn?

4) Your heart actually get’s bigger during pregnancy! According to Live Strong, the size of your heart and its position changes during pregnancy. Your uterus expands thus pushing the diaphragm upwards which then pushes the heart farther into the chest cavity. It will increase by about a total of 12% during pregnancy.

5) One in every 2000 babies is born with teeth. These teeth are called Natal teeth and are extremely rare, as you can see by the numbers. Most of the time these Natal teeth have just come earlier in life when their usual schedule doesn’t make an appearance until later on when they receive their baby teeth. So far, there is no known cause for this condition but studies show that there are hereditary links. If a baby is born with teeth and they are not loose in any way then there is no need to remove them because it is not considered a choking hazard unless another reason to remove them becomes evident. Another reason that these teeth might be pulled would be if they are very sharp because they would cause a lot of discomfort to the nursing mother. How scary would it be trying to breast feed a baby with teeth? Ouch!

6) Having a lot of heartburn during your pregnancy? Well it looks like your baby will be born with a full head of hair. Yes ladies, this is TRUE. According to CBS News, a study was done at Johns Hopkins which was published in the journal Birth stating that there is some type of correlation between heartburn and a child being born with hair.

7) Ever heard of having «pregnancy brain»? Well apparently it’s due to the fact that women have less oxygen in their blood which causes this phenomenon. «There is 15 to 40 times more progesterone and estrogen marinating the brain during pregnancy,» says Louann Brizendine, MD. Another factor that supposedly causes «pregnancy brain» is a lack of sleep. No one thinks clearly or functions normally when their going through some sort of sleep deprivation. Bad news is ladies that this fogginess could last up to a year after giving birth! No one can blame you for forgetting things now, it’s a pregnancy thing!

8) If you’re having a little baby girl she develops all of her reproductive eggs that she will ever use in utero whereas little boys don’t develop sperm until they reach puberty years later.

9) Did you know you can actually share your pregnancy symptoms with your spouse or significant other? It’s a term that’s called Couvade Syndrome which is also known as sympathetic pregnancy. This is actually a type of condition where the father-to-be will have similar experiences to you in the sense of some aches and pains along with those crazy dreams that come along with pregnancy. Is your spouse gaining some weight right along with you and having those never ending back pains? Then most likely they are suffering from this condition.

10) Babies can actually cry while their in the womb. This can start as early as the 28th week of gestation. They don’t make any kind of crying noises just yet but they silently cry which makes us want to cry right along with them! There was a study done that recorded ultrasounds of fetuses during the third trimester in which they startled the baby with a low decibel noise against the mother’s stomach which caused the baby to display traditional crying behavior. Such behavior consisted of opening their mouths and gasping irregularly. Makes sense that this can happen though right? I mean, it is rather dark and scary in there.

11) Nipple stimulation is the only scientifically proven method of legitimately bringing on labor. So eating pineapple and spicy food is really unnecessary because that’s not going to cause you to go into labor. Nipple stimulation actually releases oxytocin which is a hormone that causes contractions to start. This hormone also helps your labor to progress. Now don’t think that by doing this that it’s a sure fire way to kick start those contractions into gear, this can only work if your body is primed and ready for labor to actually start.

12) More twins are born in Central Africa then anywhere else in the world. According to Livescience, the central African country of Benin, has the highest average of twin birth rates with 27.9 twins per 1,000 births.

13) A woman’s uterus expands to more than 500 times its normal size over her entire pregnancy! During the third trimester, a woman’s uterus gets to be the size of a watermelon! The human body is truly an amazing thing.

14) Your little fetus can actually get erections in the womb. As parents, thinking about your young child getting aroused isn’t the kind of thoughts we want to have however, these little babies have been caught being aroused during ultrasounds.

As I said previously, there are so many other symptoms that can happen during pregnancy and these are just a few of the weirdest that I found interesting. None of these symptoms put your baby at risk for anything or endangers him or her in any way. These are just some interesting facts that occur thanks to good ol’ Mother Nature. Pregnancy is a mysterious and magical experience that makes you come to appreciate all that the human body is capable of doing to keep your little fetus safe, secure, and growing strong.

Some Exciting Tips to Setup Barbeque at Your Backyard

With summer knocking at the doors, the craze of under sky cooking is hitting as the prime trend among the food addicts. But, a well-designed outdoor kitchen will be equally suitable for a year-round cooking experience. An outdoor cooking substitute is as good as an indoor kitchen. It is the second happening living room of your house. However, Barbeque world is stuffed with pretty serious arguments. Gas or Charcoal? Mop or brush? Memphis or Carolina. With so many varieties in vogue, it sometimes becomes quite confusing for the house owner to set up a flexible and well equipped under sky cooking zone. Here are some expert tips, which will help you to start an esteemed external cooking area.

Initiate from the ground:

Establishing the overall floor layout is the starting block of your external cooking arsenal. Keep in mind the diverse weather conditions along with the average weight of the appliances you are planning to install. Tiles or marble floor will be slippery inviting in a bad fall. If there are small children, running here and there along with senior citizens, then the scenario may become worse. Opt for some porous flooring substance, which renders friction and this prevents slippery fall.

Choose a perfect location:

You cannot place your under sky cooking arsenal anywhere in the open space. Pick a corner, far from your main building, such that, the smoke from the grill does not waft back inside your house. Ascertain the wind pattern in your locality and then hit the first hammer on the inaugural nail. Maintain a safe distance from your neighbor's barbeque, to avoid the clash of heat (both real heat and mental heat!)

Choose the appliances correctly:

Under-sky cooking zone demands some special cooking tools, striking a sound difference with its indoor counterpart. The appliances are comparatively larger, and any professional barbeque planner or dealer will be the best person to guide you in this section. Leave adequate space on both the side of the grill to fit enough platters and other tools. Never place the appliances too close altogether.

Arrange something for entertainment:

This kind of cooking is itself an entertaining experience, but if it is accompanied by some soothing music then, the overall effect becomes much more pleasing, both to the ears and to the soul. Clad inside the arms of green nature, under the curtain of blue sky, mouth-watering food, and soothing music is the complete definition of a BBQ feel.

Last but not the least, if you are passionate about barbeque then keep every tool within your arms reach and take your food and cooking seriously. It is the taste of the food, which stays in your mind for a long time.

This kind of cooking area magnifies your living area and enables you to cook, eat, and chat without any prior reservation. Apart from fun, it also helps to keep your house cooler. Indoor oven or stove generates excessive heat in the kitchen, escalating your internal temperature and forcing your AC unit to work hard. So it is wise to create an external cooking setup, to experience a fresh new spree of cooking.

The Story Behind Simon And Garfunkel’s Greatest Hit Songs: "Homeward Bound"

Over the years many songs have been written about the varied experience of life on the road. Many examples come to mind including Grand Funk Railroad’s «We’re an American Band» («Out on the road for forty days, last night in Little Rock, put me in a haze»), Creedence Clearwater Revival’s «Travelin’ Band» («Take me to the hotel baggage gone oh well»), Dan Fogelberg’s «Same Auld Lang Syne» («I said the audience was heavenly but the traveling was hell.»). And of course there’s the desolation, quiet fury and desperation of Bob Seger’s «Turn the Page» («And you always seem outnumbered. You don’t dare make a stand»). But none capture the loneliness of touring as well as Simon and Garfunkel’s «Homeward Bound».

Bear in mind that this song was recorded somewhat hastily after «The Sounds of Silence» became a surprise smash hit in early 1966 without either Simon’s or Garfunkel’s knowledge. They had split up by then, Garfunkel having returned to college and Simon touring England as a solo folk artist. Needless to say, they reunited in a hurry.

So who was he writing it for and where was he when he wrote it? The first question is easier. After moving to England in 1964 in the wake of the failure of Simon and Garfunkel’s acoustic folk album «Wednesday Morning, 3.A.M.» Simon met Kathy Chitty at his very first club date he played, the Hermit Club in Brentwood Essex. Chitty, who was only 17, worked there part-time selling tickets. A picture of her can be found on the cover of the solo acoustic album Simon recorded while in England, «The Paul Simon Song Book». Simon and Chitty fell for one another

Kathy was in London when Simon wrote the song but where was Simon? In a railway station, of course. But which one? That’s debatable. But in an interview with SongTalk magazine in 1990 Simon recalled, «That was written in Liverpool when I was traveling. What I like about that is that it has a very clear memory of Liverpool station and the streets of Liverpool and the club I played at and me at age 22. It’s like a snapshot, a photograph of a long time ago… «. So Simon claimed Liverpool. Garfunkel thought it was in the vicinity of Manchester. However, if you go to the rail station at Widnes in Cheshire county in the northwest of England you’ll find a plaque commemorating the song displayed on the Liverpool bound platform. Simon once said of the Widnes railway station that if you ever saw it you would understand why he’d been so eager to quickly return to London.

And so Simon wrote these memorable lines:

«Every day’s an endless stream of cigarettes and magazines.

And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories.»

Although he longed to be back with Kathy in London their relationship was fated not to last. Together they revisited America touring mostly by bus. Kathy went back to England by herself with Simon following a few weeks later. Simon then came back to America when «The Sound of Silence» hit #1 on the U.S. charts but Kathy, a shy girl by nature, didn’t want to have anything to do with Simon’s new-found fame. They soon parted ways.

The Geography of Liverpool

On a world map the co-ordinates for the city of Liverpool are 53o latitude north and longitude 3o west. Liverpool is a metropolitan borough of Merseyside and a unitary authority in its own right. However, it also still retains historic links with the county of Lancashire, to which it was once part of. The Merseyside metropolis derives its name from the River Mersey and encompasses the cities and towns along its banks, estuary and hinterland. Liverpool is on the eastern bank of the River Mersey and is the fifth largest in England, with a population exceeding 440,000 in an area of around 11100 hectares. The population density in Liverpool is about 40 per hectare.

It has been established that there were settlements along the banks of the River Mersey, in the area we now know as Liverpool, dating back to the 1st century AD. These settlements would have been small fishing communities which, over the centuries, amalgamated into a heavily urbanised area by as early as the 12th century. The surface geology of Liverpool is rarely more than 10 metres thick and is a pebbly silty clay, with some sand and gravel deposits, which were all laid down by the retreating glaciers during the last ice age. The dominant bedrock in Liverpool is sandstone that was laid down in the Triassic era around 250 million years ago. To the west, the city also borders on to Carboniferous shale, mudstone and sandstone deposits as well as the Lancashire Coalfield deposits. At one time the coal deposits were workable but now, with most of the remaining deposits being below 1200m they are deemed unviable economically. However, the potential of coal bed Methane as a source of potentially clean energy is being studied, which might result in the coal deposits having a further use. In the early 1990s an oil and gas field was discovered in Liverpool Bay, out beyond The Wirral. Capable of producing 10 million cubic metres of gas and 70,000 barrels of oil a day, the field is now economically important to the area with an annual turnover exceeding £60 million. With supplies of sand, gravel and clay all available locally the traditional building materials used in Liverpool have been moulded bricks and clay tiles for roofing.

Liverpool technically extends along 21km of the east bank of the River Mersey estuary, rather than being on a river that actually flows through it. The Mersey is formed at the confluence of the River Tame and the River Goyt at Stockport in Lancashire. The famed Manchester Ship Canal joins the river at Eastham Locks and was the route by which imported cotton into the port at Liverpool was transferred to Manchester and the other weaving towns of Lancashire. Although the city of Liverpool has developed around a ridge of seven distinct hills the land rarely rises above 50m, with the highest point being at Everton Hill, 70m.

The climate in Liverpool is typical of England being a temperate one. With most of its weather systems arriving on the prevailing westerly winds, the average temperature in January is 50C and July it is 150C. On average Liverpool receives less than 750ml of rainfall a year which, considering its location on the west coast of England is surprising. However, the landmass of Ireland, to the west, absorbs much of the rainfall coming off the Atlantic Ocean that would otherwise fall on Liverpool. The average expectancy of rain in Liverpool is about 175 days a year. The temperature in January is higher than might be expected for a city in the north of England. This is because the city, and its port, benefit from the blanket effect of the North Atlantic Drift.

For many years Liverpool was seen as an economically depressed area with a stock of low cost and poor quality housing. The recent regeneration of the city has seen the price of the city’s housing stock rise by up to 15% a year over the last 10 years. Currently house prices in Liverpool fluctuate compared to regional and national trends depending on the type of property, but the housing market here is a buoyant one. In early 2007, a semi-detached 3 bedroom house in Liverpool on average cost £155,000, which was the same as the regional average but lower than the national average, which was £185,000. At £290,000 the average price of a typical 4 bed-roomed detached house in Liverpool is again about the same as the regional average but nearly 10% below the national average. A two bed-roomed terraced house in Liverpool will cost about £100,000, which is again about the regional average but almost 20% below the national average. The average regional value of a two bed roomed flat is £115,000 whereas In Liverpool it is £150,000 a figure which is also slightly higher than the national average.

New Hopes? Guardiola To Lead Barca

One of the oldest and most well-known football clubs in the history of the sport; the FC Barcelona has been struggling over the past seasons in the Spanish first division in order to get back on track. It has definitely been a bumpy ride for the Catalan group as many of its football have began to diminish their usual shine; either due to injuries or constant internal affairs that do not seem to reconcile.

However, the Barça continues to be an European football powerhouse with 18 Liga titles, 7 Spain Supercopa, 2 UEFA Championship League, 24 Copa del Rey and 2 European Super Cups as background. The team draws large amounts of followers due to the magnificent play display and its football players who make the show worth seeing; players such as: Samuel Eto'o, Xavi, Ronaldinho, Gianluca Zambrotta, Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi, and Rafael Márquez have supported the Spanish team for the recent era.

As of 2003 the Spanish club hired former AC Milan and Dutch star Frank Rijkaard to lead the club and during his first season the Barcelona obtained the Liga championship besides the Super Copa and one of the most incredible accomplishments a UEFA Champions League title which ended the team's drought of 14 years.

Most recently during the 2006-07 season the Barcelona began to show some signs of weakness as the club finished second in the Liga and were not able to conquer any other European tournament. Therefore; the team's leaders decided it was time for a major change as they have asked Rijkaard to step down.

"Joan Laporta [FC Barcelona President] has announced that Frank Rijkaard will end his career at the club at the end of this current 2007/08 season. Josep Buardiola, current coach of Barça B, has been picked as his replacement on the bench of FC Barcelona. "After a meeting of the Board of Directors, the president Joan Laporta appeared before the media to announce the takeover on the bench of the first team of FC Barcelona at the end of the season. On June 30, Frank Rijkaard will no longer be coach of FC Barcelona and Josep Guardiola will be his replacement. "

The announcement has left many questions as what exactly happened in the club's locker room as despite the Dutch Coach's success his leave has become a need. Many have stated the real reason is the players themselves who don't count with the proper encouragements and a positive attitude besides the obvious disagreements between the club and some of their super stars as Ronaldihno and Thierry Henry. Others claim that two years without a title is a clear sign it is time for a new approach in order to shift the future.

On the other hand, new coach Guardiola who will take over from the beginning of the new football season was leading the FC Barcelona B team since 2007 and he has a vast knowledge in the sport as he is a former Al Ahly of Qatar, Brescia, AS Roma, and Mexico's Dorados player. We certainly hope to see an improvement in the team's play and attitude as it has everything required to be one of Spain's top winners and achieve a new title during the 2008-09 campaign.
